Server 2012 File Server - suddenly stops serving requests (but otherwise looks fine)

Mighty weird one here - for the past day or so our Server 2012 staff file storage server has suddenly stopped working normally and prevents staff from browsing to it with access denied permissions errors. regardless of your personal permissions (in my case domain admin) its just not possible to access the file server over the network.

However....logging on through RDP I can still easily locally browse to the files, see that the permissions are the same as always. Even more weirdly is there is nothing obvious in the logs, no high CPU usage, no weirdness of any kind what so ever.

A restart promptly makes the issue go away (usually its about once a day with no particular pattern); our student file storage server which is configured identically hasn't shown even a hint of this issue at all.

Going to remove it from the domain and add it back on tonight to see if it makes any change but does anyone have any other ideas?

Worst comes to the worse I'll replicate the data over to another server and switch over but either way its a faf :)

The file shares themselves are hosted on DFS and one thing I will be trying next time it happens is if a direct server name UNC path works any better.

Is it a VM or physical? What's the clock drift like compared to the DC? The security log should at least give some idea for the denied messages.

VM hosted on VMWare - nothing in the VMware logs that I can find as well.

Clock sync is bang on, nothing at all in the security logs and firewall is turned on and seems to be working good (although I shall enable firewall logging and see if anything comes up there).

Had the exact same thing today. Reboot solved it but can't find any errors in the logs.

We also had a similar problem today, luckily for us it only seems to happen every couple of weeks very strange though, Server 2012 Standard on Hyper-V we have about 6 file share servers and this is the only one with a problem.

Have you guys installed any 2012 hotfixes recently? Seems odd the problem has only just started.

I installed all updates available two weeks ago when it last had the problem hoping it would go away but it happened again today. We had the same issue again on a different 2012 file server which was upgraded from 2008 r2 and I ended up rebuilding that server from scratch and have not had the problem re occur. Feel I might end up rebuilding this file server if it does it again.

Same here, no new patches since path tuesday.

Found that some people hade simular problems on vmware when the disk for some reason became a movable device and they had auditing turned on.

When it "stops" serving requests are you able to access the shares via IP? (I think you can do this again in 2012)

ie: \\10.0.0.1\share rather than \\filesrv1\share

Got to say I haven't tried this its more of a case of o dear its happened again restart the server and all is good nothing in the logs etc but I will try it if/when it happens again.

Most werid - seems like the same situation everywhere.

Ran some updates a few weeks ago but has only cropped up recently.

Going to take a look into that VMWare removeable disk problem - I can remember reading about it a while back and laughing about VMware screwing up (don't ask why I have it here!).

IP/direct UNC path instead of DFS is the next thing I'm going to try if/when it happens.

Had this for the first time this morning with our SIMS 2012 server after it's run since August with no issues. Have done a Windows update on it and rebooted, now working fine. Nothing in my logs either.

Glad it wasn't just me though!!!

It may be worth considering 2012 R2 (as an upgrade) if the problems continue. It should be fairly straight forward upgrading 2012 to 2012 R2, but not something I have done (as yet).

I'm looking at 2008 R2 to 2012 R2 early 2014.

does sims support r2 as i have a server thats licensed for r2 but has 2012 installed (licensed for that as well)

Just out of interest, if the people with issues could say if it's a DFS share or non DFS share.

Non dfs simple file share here, simple permissions and file resource manager but nothing fancy.

This has been driving me batty for last month. Server is otherwise fine, no event log messages, but all file shares simply stop responding. We have dug into this fairly deeply, and the best guess I can see is a significant delay in authentication is causing a timeout on service access. We sometimes get different loss of access depending on whether its a XP or Win7/8 client. A server reboot is the only thing that fixes it. It affects DFS and normal shares, which means our Group policy stops as well as our simple shared company folder.

We are about to do a migration to 2012R2 in hope it fixes the issue, after that it is back to 2008 R2...

Would love for ANY clue as to what is causing this.

(on that note we are VMWare hosted 2012 as well....)

How odd! I have a 2012 file server too, but no problems as yet (touches anything wooden in immediate vicinity).

I shall be keeping a very close eye on this thread!
