Are you a stereotypical geek?

If not, what do you get upto?

 

(by stereotypical, I mean hobbies etc that still include geek like things such as computing, RPGs, card games, comics ... outside of your day to day job role).

 

I still am heavily geek outside of work, but I also take part in the following (and more) outside of work:

Kickboxing instructor

Various Martial Arts practitioner

Frequent gym user

Photographer

Petrol head (anything with an engine)

Took up Salsa dancing for a while

Cyclist

Gamer (console and PC, but that could be still being geek?)

Card games - bridge?, eucre?, snap?

My typical week sees me going to the gym three times, doing a couple of ballet classes and watching classic TV series. I ride my bike when I can be arsed, although no where near enough. I make all my own sox on a 100 year old CSM, and I used to ride fast motorbikes. I would have one now, but lack of money prevents it. One day I WILL get my blue framed Imola (Ducati 750SS in case your not familiar) and rebuild my SR500 Special (I have all the special bits, I just need a decent donor bike). I have four SLR cameras which get used, proper ones too - none of this digital nonsense. The newest is a Pentax LX of 1980 vintage and the oldest an Exacta Varex VX from 1951.

 

I'm so ungeeky I don't even have a mobile phone (that's me and Tom Stoppard, so I'm in good company!).

• I mess about with various OSs, both professionally and recreationally.
  
• I like Sci-Fi shows, though I haven't watched Firefly.
  
• And I watch a lot of original content on the internet... usually about geeky things. [Extra Credits, The Escapist, PBS Idea Channel]

Play consoles (sega fan boy, currently playing ECCO the Dolphin on my dreamcast)

As above, enjoy retro-ish gaming (own a Mega Drive, Saturn, Dreamcast, Xbox, Xbox 360 (+Kinect), PS3, Wii, Gameboy Color (see through purple!!), and a DS

sometimes do running/gym (but cant overload as i have shin splints)...

Yes, definitely.

 

Computer Gaming (pretty much anything really, but I lean more towards the RPG/story side),

Wargames (Played numerous systems - and have quite a few forces, certainly for fantasy/sci-fi),

Tabletop Roleplay (Currently usually D&D3.5/Pathfinder, but also play Rolemaster, WHFRP, Privateer to name just a few),

and Airsoft (although I'm not sure Airsoft fits into the stereotype).

Well given that the stereotypical geek is male... I fail at the outset

 

I would go as far as to say that I am anything but a sterotypical geek... which causes me problems at places like BETT where I have been ignored or, worse still, had surprised comments; I came close to inflicting physical injury to one male BETT attendee this year.

@kaphc is another female geek who has had similar issues at BETT!

No longer practice either MA due to disability.

 

I am a keen welder, carpenter, bricklayer and basically will do anything that involves taking apart or building.

 

Big time gamer since I stopped the martial arts.

Probably a bit geeky, I do like my gadgets!

but also a Powerboat Instructor, Tall Ship Sailor, Ambulance Reservist (that would have been my career if I didn't end up in IT!) and Lowland Search and Rescue Technician, so spend lots of time away from computers!

I have umpteen Children's Trading Card decks (Magic: The Gathering, FullMetal Alchemist, Yu-Gi-Oh, Pokémon)

I used to play Dungeons and Dragon's until our group drifted apart (those boring 'job' things, and uni. Grr!)

I play lots of video games on my custom-built gaming PC

I do some amateur digital art from time to time, though mostly favours or for my own use.

In the past year I have repaired more laptops for friends and family than I have fingers.

Dabbling back into web design (and failing miserably! So much has changed in the past 5 years )

I have two different Warhammer 40,000 armies.

 

I'd say I'm pretty geeky

I do muck about with techy/gadgety stuff like arduino and rpi, and am know as a geek outside of work.

But can be found blacksmithing on Saturdays (second job)

Also lift weights, spend lunch break getting some walking miles in and have fun with our 6 dogs too (4 are giant breeds).

Misses and I have plans for a homestead raising animals one day, hopefully that'll supplant the IT job

Design and Build wooden clocks. Just started learning how to do stained glass, slightly lapsed glider pilot (post solo but very inexperienced), Photography, Cooking, gardening, Hen husbandry, Creative writing, Philosophy, History (Roman Republic), Law, flying eensy weensy iddle biddle helicopters.

 

But, all of those are really a bit (or a lot!) geeky. Now that Geek is cool, I'm not sure what a stereotypical geek is. The hacker/maker community seem interested in everything. Which is as it should be.

I'm a lot less geeky than I used to be say 5 years ago.

 

Used to spend virtually all my time outside of work on the PC or doing PC-related things, but now I hardly turn my desktop PC on. Partly because my interests have changed (wife and kids tend to do that!) and partly because I don't need the PC so much any more. I can get the things I want and need done quicker using my iPad and my phone (Android).

 

I've now got into other things: getting more into cars, teaching myself basic mechanics; got a caravan and spending time tinkering and fettling with that; got back into model building; and at the moment am obsessed with the TV show Wheeler Dealers!

 

I'm much more likely to be doing something electrical or electronic if I'm being geeky or techy now than computer related.
