Cannot remove default items from Start Menu using Group Policy
AXE replied to Callum's topic in Windows 10
Indeed. It's annoying that they're still there. But they can be blocked with AppLocker.- 20 replies

Been without water in Stroud for the last 4 days. Can't even flush a toilet, take a shower or even wash up a plate and fork.

A quad core HP PC with a GT720 can run Solidworks for about that budget. Not super-fast or brand new, but available from plenty of suppliers.

A bit of searching and I was able to generate a master password to unlock the drive; only worked if an admin bios password had previously been set though.

There's year old laptops that do that also. Even let you set a HDD password.

I'd play but the server always seems to be offline...

Using VirtualBox as an immutable configurable platform for computer science
AXE posted a blog entry in AXE's Blog
So. I'm using VMs in VirtualBox as immutable members in a virtual network that now spans the globe... Transparent proxy. Visual Studio 2017. Using CentOS, dnsmasq, iptables, nginx, arptables and... SOFTETHER Stay tuned for the exciting next chapter.. -
I've had some success with thinstation - a Kiosk mode RDP shell direct to a terminal services server... Alas it's from... (sourceforge) and mostly in German.. but there's some VERY helpful documentation out there. Could give a new lease of life to some OLD laptops...

Poll: What should the next Minecraft server be?
AXE replied to localzuk's topic in EduGeek Minecraft
All done with Agrarian Skies 2 now. Currently playing through Regrowth and just started Project Ozone. Don't expect those packs would really work well on multiplayer though. -
I don't make the disk immutable. I use VBoxManage to create a per-user snapshot after restoring a fixed snapshot. This doesn't roam with the user though, they have to use the same PC each time. Users can choose to restore the default snapshot or the per user snapshot if changes need to persist. Then I use VBoxSDL to start the VM with options to disable virtualbox shortcuts (take snapshot, settings, etc.). The whole thing is password protected too, with a password created for each session, no running VMs whenever they feel like it.

It sounds daunting but... Create a new OU in Active Directory with only a small subset of policies. Run a script to remove all of the CC4 software on a workstation. After moving the workstation to the new OU, reboot and start testing. Keep in mind that there are things you'll lose, like.. printer and drive mapping, start menu shortcut delivery, automated build and software installation.. but then there are alternatives available for all of those tasks.

Had pretty much a 100% failure rate. I've found that there are a lot of things that cause core updates to fail. #1: If you've ever used a tool to clean user profiles off a PC, it's pretty much guaranteed to fail. #2: If you've ever installed\reinstalled Internet Explorer or Java, it's pretty much guaranteed to fail. It's left me only with the option of doing full rebuilds now every time there is even a minor issue. It also doesn't help much when every ticket I open with RM support ends up with the suggestion to either 'Core Upgrade ALL of your PCs' or simply 'Rebuild ALL of your PCs'.
