Be telling me please wise folk of Edugeek land - is there a heap of difference between the CS4, CS5 and CS6 versions. Apparently no upgrade discount available so it looks wise to continue using the 1 CS4 and 4 CS5 licences we currently have unless say for example they aren't going to work when we update the OS on the workstations they are on from XP.

Be interesting to see what they take over in the next few years. Make a heck of a difference to have their management team having a poke about with G4s for example!

We have Licenses for a number of versions of Photoshop (CS4, 5 and 6) I'm currently trying to upgrade so that we run all on CS6. Is there any way of doing this? If not any recommendations please for best price licenses purchase?

Thanks for that. Sent them an e-mail enquiry - no phone number given by me, within about 3 minutes I had a fairly hard sell telephone call. Way out of our price league anyhow as they make no differentiation between a school with 70 students - same price as if we had 1700!

I keep (or try to keep up to date) an Excel spreadsheet of IT kit in the School. The Bursar want's a comprehensive database of all kit in the school built including IT but also other kit. What do other schools use to do this with? I'm not getting lumbered with adding all the other kit on by the way!!

I was leaning toward becoming enthusiastic about Apple till it decided to push out Maverick and IOS 7. Since they arrived iPads been iffy and had a least one Mac loose the plot completely. New out the box MacBook Pro lost OS on upgrade and had to take it to a Genius bar for restore. Most annoyingly in school our wonderful value and in my opinion 'Perfect' Air Servers have had to upgrade to allow teachers to use IOS 7 'upgraded' iPads but on SmartBoards with 'older' PCs no longer works now because the graphics aren't good enough for the upgrade.

As far as I'm concerned the honours system sucks. For example Andy Murray might not have the sparkling personality and appeal of say Mo Farrah but he had a sparkling sporting record last year winning Olympic Gold and being the first British man to win Wimbledom for I think it's 76 years - no Knighthood, why not? I hate footy but David Beckham is a shining example of a true Brit success story - he'd sit far better in The House of Alford's as far as I'm concerned than many of the over bred, over educated types who get to grace those red benches now. Professor Stephen Hawking also should surely be ennobled - to me at least he is arguably unmatched as an example of a true Great Britain. If they can't run a honours system fairly then just as well they bin it.

Thanks @3s-gtech Ah the beauties of being dyslexic - mind I was 42 before my mother mentioned that I'd been labeled as such when at school! Your answer were sounds interesting - have you anything in mind? Whats used in other schools I wonder. Our site is a tiddler, I'm thinking a big secondary or college must have decent mobile Comms for staff?

We currently have a mix of EnGenius and BT roving handsets connected to our copper wired internal phone system for use around our fairly small site. We are a KS3 special school. We have Comms dropping off where we actually need it e.g. The Sports Hall. The main need for roving phones is to call for backup should the lads 'kick off'. Can anyone advise / recommend on any kit they use or is available that might be suitable for the job. N.B. The chap who Cary's out our internal line maintenance is planning to change us over to a system that runs over the LAN in the not too distant future.

Since we went from copper to Fiber to the cabinet our network speed has jumped from about 10 gbps download to just under 40 our upload speed hasn't enjoyed any comparable difference though fluctuating between just under 10 down to as slow as 1. We were thinking that this all would give us faster Internet but alas it hasn't. In particular now we get teachers complaining that things such as video clips from the BBC stall. Nothing has changed internally in the school since FTTC anyone got any suggestions what could be going on please.

In my limited experience the best way to get saves to MS networks is by using a mini mac server. There are people on Edugeek far more experienced than me who will be able to advise on setting it up. We have a mini mac which was set up by a really fab chap in the Bristol area who used to work as a school NM then went on to set up his own Mac advisory company. Very unfortunately he has been snapped up by the commercial world now it seems and all my attempts to contact him fail nowadays.

Another + for Sophos EM from me. I know it had a 'major' problem about a year ago now but the support team did a magnificent job recovering that plus I have never found Sophos support wanting. We have a lot of our lock downs working through a work group on the Enterprise Console and it's a great tool for monitoring in so many other ways as well. The price is pretty unbeatable and great value as well.

I think you fairly sum up the position of many of us. Windows 7 was brought out to replace the heap of rubbish that was the hastily released memory hungry Vista. Windows 7 for most of us in Education I suspect does a fine and manageable job. I'm certainly in no haste to lurch down the Windows 8 road. Tried it on my DH's All in One and was told to get rid!! Delighted to give you your very first TY BTW.

Decent episodes of Enterprise and Stargate - for a change. Whiskey Galore, Titchfield Thunderbolt repeats apart from that a shed load of old cobblers as far as I saw. Only got Freeview but despite the heaps of Chanel's on that I have switched off most nights and listened to Planet Rock on an iPlayer App as the digital signal on the Pure radio vanished - never to be picked up again. The units about 10 years old now and they have stopped pushing out upgrades for it so, no doubt expecting it was never going to last that long.

Just noticed this thread. I too am having issues since Apple decided to 'upgrade' . Being a distinct amateur when it comes to Apple I was hugely relieved a couple of years ago to find @edumac on this forum and we had him in for a morning and he ironed out all our Mac / AD integration wobbles. Unfortunately he no longer seems to be about. As NM in my school I'd happily pay a Mac expert for a mornings work to come in and make our Apples sit happily in the AD basket again as currently I'm wasting a heap of time trying to get it to happen.

My son's a SharePoint architect working on contracts from home. He was recently telling me that he has switched to Windows Azure to run his work out from. He has 2 virtual DC's set up on it and a heap of other stuff (My SQL etc.) and it does the job very well for his needs. At work we are a small KS3 Special School for boys who have various difficulties. we have a heap of kit but haven't ventured down the road of virtualisation yet - I can't get my head round Migrating our E-mail system so going virtual in any way is way ahead of me!! That said it got me to thinking we have a now getting toward old DC running Windows 2008 Standard server and a second newer DC that's running the R2 version and hosting the MIS so I need to be planning toward the future and wonder if I ought to be exploring something like Azure as an option?

Why on earth aren't these things fully tested before release?

Top value bit of kit. Only got a few here but I have on as preference for my own workstation. It outpaces most more recognisable 'brand' names that are more than twice the price and pehaps best of all it's not reliant of fussy manufactures update software and pre-loaded with so called added value cra** ware!

Strange one this. Doesn't sound like HP as I'm pretty sure they use UPS who pitch up to collect with their own packaging that sort of seals the kit on a board which is then neatly and safely placed in an outer container. Most impressed I was when I had to send one of the not very impressive HP notebooks back.
