Not wishing to hijack the thread but who's the recommended supplier of Smoothwall? My school is looking to buy it in.

Did you ever resolve this one? I ask as post updates today to our 64bit W7 clients our students have been unable to open any previously saved projects in it. Staff accounts don't seem to be affected. The work saves in the Student's home directory and they have full permissions over it - so it shouldn't be a problem?

Today our students using Photostory 3 have found that when trying to open a saved project they are getting a message up saying Access Denied. Staff are not suffering he same problem. I've checked the permissions and the student has full access - the only thing I can think it might be is something to do with the MS updates that went out to the W7 64 bit machines today?

There must be something in the water that certain members of SLTs are drinking currently I have explained to the SLT member here who is pushing this that being able to take photos, integrate it into a document in say the Pages app then Air Print and somehow store it isn't something that's going to happen easily. Then there's the wireless aspect and the fact that these devices are toward the breakable end of the spectrum. Bang for buck I don't think they are going to be worth it.

I think that you unfortunately seem to have hit the nail on the head there @boomish Most of the minuses are on the side of managing the flipping things. Has anyone written a definitive paper on how to set up and manage iPads in schools I wonder; it would be hugely useful.

It seems many of us are in the same boat - exploring the way to go on this. A member of my SMT decided that we would just leap in and buy a number of iPads for each faculty. Luckily I was able to stop the leap in the dark pointing out issues with storage of both devices and data etc. From my research through Edugeek (there are several similar threads to this dotted about the forum) I'm picking up that Surface Pro is probably the best way to go on a Windows Domain.

I agree, in this sort of instance using such Apps as Coaches Eye this is an extremely useful tool. On the other hand I think the case for students to actually have the devices to use themselves in the classroom is far from proven and can achieve nothing in reality that can't be done using a standard PC.

Useful thread - thanks Steph. I posted something similar recently but prehaps so not well thought out as yours. My school is a KS3 for boys with Emotionsl and Behavioural Difficulties. We have classes of 8 and every classroom has workstations or sadly in a couple of rooms laptops (the lads hate them). Teachers all have iPads and we run Air Server for IWB access. A member of our SMT recently started pushing the idea of five sets of 8 iPads for use by the lads so they can use Apps such as Pages allowing them to say take photos with the device of say a science project and integrate it, print it straight away and ultimately save a copy for evidence. Personal I don't feel the case for them is anywhere near proven and given the fact that three staff have recently 'broken' iPads (one PE Instructor actually used his to shield his head from a ball in a gymnasium:rolleyes:) I am not at all enthusiastic. Now if someone could actually prove that the expenditure would make a difference to the Educational outcomes then naturally my attitude would change!

Can you set Group Policy options for Chrome? Recently I've found on two Windows 7 clients I use that Chrome picked up Malware.

I'm going to try and run the W7 repair on it for starters. I don't particularly want to go through the 4 disks that Lenovo send as a factory restore as they seem to take about two days to get a machine back to anything like normal! I have a feeling that this particular machine has played up in the past and I just put a fresh local copy of W7 on it then so it should hopefully repair from the W7 disk.

Thanks for the suggestion @FN-GM but no it's not that as Staff access is OK and the users aren't having the same problem (yet) on any other clients.

Odd one this morning - one of our Windows 7 64 bit OS Lenovo M92Zs has stopped mapping home network drives for the students - a shared Student drive is mapped though. Oddly all ok for staff and it's so far just the one PC? I've run DELPROF2 and restarted with the same student log ons a few times but the issue persists?

My personal view is that as we currently have 20 iPads and as the staff have managed to borf three of em then there is no way I'd let Emotionally and Behaviourally Disturbed teenagers anywhere near them - especially as the current intake seem hell bent on making work for me at every opportunity (iMac plus a Win7 client today failed to start in a timely fashion so both have had to be wiped and restored. My KS3 daughter would love access to some of the quality kit our boys have, the system does seem very skewed! However, I can see the logic behind giving the lads something that they can use that will enable them to easily integrate pictures and all in a project. This is something I need to explore and I don't want to go off half cocked when it comes to making a purchasing recommendation. Your replies are gretly appreciated - thanks very much.

Umh - no one got any thoughts on this one it seems? What are you folk using in your schools please and what works good and bad?

Mods please forgive me I have already asked a similar question but after talking to the SMT member who is trying to drive this one I have a better idea now of what he has in mind. We are predominantly a Windows establishment Server 2008 with Windows 7 clients. We have circa 150 workstations / laptops and rarely have more than 50 online at any one time. We currently have 70 students - EDB KS3 school. What he wants: Students to be able to work on something like the App Pages where they can quickly integrate work – take pictures of the science project they are doing for example and combine it in a document which they can then printout at the end of the lesson. Practicalities: Storage / charging of devices when not in use. Storage of back up of work. Practicalities – we have School Agreements with both Adobe and Microsoft based on FTE. Licencing of Apps or whatever on devices. Wireless network. with Ruckus Zone Director and 5 points. Anything else I need to consider?

Probably a good philosophy @flyinghaggis but I'm sticking out for the case to be justified - seen to many wild brained half cocked purchases in the past!

I wish I knew @FN -GM ! It all seems to be on a bit of a whim at present. Other schools have it so we must as well; I have asked if it can be justified but go date no answer to that one.

Certain members of our 'management' seem desperately keen to let our Emotionally and Behaviourally Disturbed KS3 boys have iPads for classroom use. Having seen how some teachers have managed to wreck iPads I'm not keen and ask for justification of the planned spend. Yet to thrash that one out. However, we are predominantly a MS domain with iPads for teachers (Airserver use in particular) and Macs for Art the latter running through a Mini Mac Server for AD integration. If we do go the hand held route for the students I'm trying to get a 'feel' for what would really and offer best value.

I was looking at using it but when it came to reading the 'terms and conditions' I decided against. Free at present but the way I read it they have the option to start charging - including retrospectively at any time they want to.
