I'm glad to say that as of yet we haven't followed this hugely expensive fad. Given the passage of time it will no doubt develop into a very useful learning tool but in my opinion currently it's just an expensive toy that few actual students will learn or otherwise benefit from. In the case of my KS3/4 school if the teaching staff could advance beyond using the simpler elements of MS Office and a few online tools toward using the full features of both Office and our Adobe suite I'd feel we had made a huge step toward providing a better learning option for our students!

SWGfL tell me they now have it sorted. Yippee! That said I feel they have big questions to answer on what happened. It's us folk at the chalk face who have had to deal with pretty immense flack over this utter debacle. Needs a statement from SWGfL I feel?

Thanks duly given @Cache Unusual for Edugeek I was getting Lonley here! How do you run it at your school then? We have a CD-ROM that has an exe on it that seems to lead to a heap of PDFs and some interactive content. We are running Impero so our 'lovely little chaps' can't run .exe files in their own right. I'm not at all sure how to set it up so that our Y10 / Y11s can access and work with it? Any advice would be overwhelmingly welcome.

Bumpyt, bumpyt bump! Any tips on best practice at all on this please? ASDAN folk tell me I'm ok sharing the content to our staff and students so all I need now is to set it up so it's tickety boo.

This has worked for my school. However, sadly it's yet another unacceptable interruption to services by SWGfL as our ISP. Good staff there for sure but it's us folk at the school chalk face who get the grief when things like this happen. Additionally, we are currently having LAN cabling work going on so that was our first point of trouble shooting it was by chance that I logged a call with SWGfL and discovered the problem lay with them. It would have bee flipping helpful to say the least if they e-mailed their Schools to explain what was going on. Rant over!

It's situations like this that drive existing SWGfL customers away and into the hands of other ISPs. Having been with SWGfL now for 10 years plus now and one the whole having received a pretty good standard of service I'm reluctant to jump ship but finding situations like this weaken the case. Especially when I wasn't aware it was a grid issue till after umpteen calls from staff telling me 'the network' isn't working. The fact it was intermittent across the domain didn't help. Rarely it wasn't Edugeek that made me aware of the issue but the fact that in desperation I logged a support call. If only SWGfL support had sent out a notification it would have saved a heap of work and embarrassment. Schools Broadband is looking increasingly attractive!

I've just been given a CD ROM with the ASDAN course data on it and been told it needs to be made available to Students. As it's copywrite I'm seeking advice on how others have achieved this?

Yep, same here. Naturally all my fault of course! Now sent a message round to all staff explaining exactly what the issue is.

Recently with IE11 being automatically being pushed by our WDS and replacing IE9 we have seen issues where first the proxy setting isn't getting picked up and secondly Google which is set as our home page isn't getting picked up and with the latter all attempts to run in compatibility mode and set as trusted sites etc don't have any effect. Any suggestions please?

Had the same problem. As @matt40k says it's a local copy of the fmsconnect.ini that's causing the problem. You need to find it in the Users / username / files (it will be hidden) delete it then the next time that particular AFMS authorised user logs on the correct file will be replicated into it's place. Job done.

Yes, I have over the past couple of years tended toward Samsung with several 620 and 680 machines. Unfortunately they aren't that popular with teaching staff. I saw a demo of the Epson non laser at the South a west Regional Conference at Bristol in July and it seemed a good alternative.

I'm looking for a decent throughput yet eco friendly network printer to put in a classroom that's a tad remote from the main print facility. I have gone for Samsung Lasers in the recent past but they don't seem very teacher proof. At the SWGfL Conference in July the Epson people were demoing kit that looked pretty good value but I've had a tidy up since and can't find contact details any longer!

Running a Windows Server 2008 Domain with mostly Windows 7 Pro clients. Student log ons ok. However, random staff are not picking up the proxy setting on logging onto a fresh client. Odd thing is staff members set up on the same day logging onto nearby clients pick the proxy up ok?

Sad to read about yet another case of inappropriate teacher / pupil contact and falsifying data on the BBC web today. Well done to the schools IT team for catching the chap but it leaves me wondering why yet again a teacher (Head of Department at that) would be so naive to think that he might get away with such behaviour. Personally I find IE to be the best option still on Windows Domains. I had switched to Google Chrome but in a number of instances after recent upgrades found that it's started to inexplicably block sites.

Umh, that's a bit of a blow. We have a number set up for sharing so being able to share them going on would have been very handy.

Who pays you for them, is it a local company? I have only been able to find for free ones such as the excellent LCWS to date. I went up into my attic recently and retrieved several boxes of floppies which I took to bits then shredded the platters. It's left me with at least a kilo of good quality aliminium / steel parts that is actually probably worth a few bob.

I laboriously disassemble the HDDs and remove the platters which I then malarmalise. Takes a while but you know they are done when they are done! Interestingly I'd always thought the platters were hard steel but to my surprise some shatter more like glass. Oh, and the best way of marmalising them is to put them on a carpet and run over them with the casters of a swivel chair

As far as I know my account manager (Michael Hinchliffe) is still in place and he get's a ten out of ten from me. Never had anything other than first class service.
