    You will have to use Local Update Publisher to add it to WSUS yourself. Hotfixes are by definition not available in WSUS or in the Windows Update Catalog (when they get that far they just call them updates rather than hotfixes). LUP does take a bit of setting up and learning, but it's well worth it IMO.

    We started having problem with this ourselves this term and it prompted me to look into this again. My eventual solution was to set file permissions via Group Policy to add a Deny rule for our pupils group on the on %SystemRoot%\System32\mmsys.cpl This control panel icon was already disabled by GP, but as others have found, you can still get to it by right-clicking on the volume control icon. Basically I just replicated the existing permissions for this file in Policies\Windows Settings\Security Settings\File System and then added the Deny rule in as well. This still gives them access to the mixer via the normal system tray icon, but if they right-click and try to open Playback Devices, nothing will happen. Meanwhile, Staff and admins can still access everything as normal.

    iOS has some mass device management built in. It's what Profile Manager on OSX uses to interface with iOS devices, but in a wholly un-Apple-like move, they allow third parties to build MDM tools as well. It's far from perfect though. Although you can push apps, at the moment it generates a prompt on the device and you still have to physically accept it on each device AND type in the Apple ID password. I did read last week that iOS 6 is supposed to support silent push deployment, but Meraki certainly doesn't support it yet. However, it does let us deploy Apple VPP codes a lot more quickly than entering claim codes on every device, and I avoided having to but a Mac to run Profile Manager.

    Yep, I got an email replying to the support case at 9pm last night saying they had fixed it, and it's now working for us too.

    Guess I'll try again tomorrow then. I've put a support case in, but given that they are slow to respond even when you are paying them (as I do at one site as we use their wireless kit), I'm not holding my breath.

    This. Unfortunately you've fallen into the "let's solve everything with technology" trap. If staff are not supposed to send pupils in unsupervised, that is people problem and is for SMT to deal with. Apparently it's why they get paid more than us, so make the buggers earn it.

    Can someone who uses Meraki System Manager have a look and see if they can add new apps today? Every time I try to search for an app to add on the web console, this is all I get: Happens regardless of what country I pick, and however long I leave it. I last used it about 2 weeks ago and it worked fine then, and very quickly. Is it just us?

    Where did you get this information? I ask because this hotfix does not update Gpprefcl.dll, it updates Gpprnext.dll, which is the Group Policy Printers extension (i.e. what you see under Policies\Windows Settings\Deployed Printers). This is not the same as the Printer section of Group Policy Preferences, although they achieve similar goals.

    Yep, basically by default you get read-only access to most of the data via SQL views, which are the exact same views you see in Report Builder. We have a few sections on our Intranet that access it for things like form/set lists and quick access to contact details. A little while ago I also figured out how to check if teachers had completed their register, and they now get a dirty great reminder on their Intranet homepage if they are late doing it.

    Microsoft I'm not so concerned about, but Facebook is the last company I would want anywhere near schools. Their seminar at the e-safety Live conference earlier this year was ample demonstration they have no clue what they are doing when it comes to dealing with children and schools.

    Lets' hope its not as rubbish as the Latutude ST. I have one sitting on my desk and it is so underpowered it's a joke. To the OP: I doubt any of us are going to find a tablet cheaper than the iPad any time soon that is worth buying. As much as I like to bash Apple, I think the iPad 2 is pretty good value.

    It's my understanding that having technical staff in a US public school is quite rare. Centralised support is provided at the school district level (roughly equivalent to the LA), but in individual schools, teachers are very much left to fend for themselves.

    I'm wondering the same thing myself. Unless there is more to this than is being reported, it seems like there is very little to blame on students at this point. Of course, we don't know if any of them did anything else with the photo (such as making copies or forwarding it). I think Orange (for example) has it enabled by default, at least on some plans, but you do still need to turn the hotspot on manually on the iPhone.

    Now we're talking the sort of price range they should have been all along... @localzuk, since you've had some experience with these in schools, a question for you: do you still have to get Chromebooks on a lease if you want management via the Google Apps dashboard, or can you get that with an upfront purchase now?

    Just realised that I never posted the solution to this: when I dropped the refresh rate on the external output from 60Hz to 30Hz, the problem immediately went away. The projector specs say it supports 1920x1080 at 60Hz, but it only works reliably for us on this resolution at 30Hz. Nobody can tell the difference on PowerPoint, and it's difficult to tell even with HD video, so that's what it's been set on ever since.

    My money is on the refresh rate. We had this with a Mitsubishi projector that claimed to support full HD at 60Hz but actually only worked reliably at this resolution if you dropped it down to 30Hz. The problem was intermittent for us too, but went away as soon as I changed the refresh rate, and has never returned.

    We don't do this here so I don't have a sample document to provide, but if we were to do this I would want the parents to sign it. No harm in having the students sign it too, but parents need to know they are on the hook if little Johnny drops it down a well.

    I'm waiting for the Surface Pro. The Surface RT that is now on pre-order is the ARM one that according to Microsoft's own comparison page "Works exclusively with apps available in the Windows Store." Sod that. Also, this makes a compelling argument (though if the sell-out reports are true it is wrong on one prediction): Don't Preorder Microsoft Surface

    It strikes me that this is the sort of scenario that Active Directory Lightweight Directory Services (AD LDS) is designed for. I haven't implemented it myself though, and as usual, the MS documentation is not for the faint of heart.

    This one solved a plethora of niggles for me: You experience a long domain logon time in Windows 7 or in Windows Server 2008 R2 after you deploy Group Policy preferences to the computer It includes a bunch of previous hotfixes for GPP too, some of which were specifically for Printers.

    Not sure on the technical procedure, but as for Data Protection, this is covered by a section 40 exemption from disclosing information about identifiable individuals where it would breach the Data Protection Act.
