Afternoon all, Just to check I'm not going mad, could a few of you check the following stream in WMP or VLC to see if it plays properly for you? http://mediaweb.musicradio.com/Show.asx?StreamID=2 It's the stream published on the Classic FM website for use with Linux, but we've tended to use it routinely as we've had frequent trouble with the web version. Normally it works fine but at the moment it's just playing a few seconds of music - the same few seconds every time - before cutting out.

I believe the support is there, but not all MDMs implement it yet. Meraki certainly didn't when I set up our iPads last month.

I prefer my applications to be shouty and angry anyway.

Depends on the size of your school, the size of your technical staff, and the size of your budget. In my experience a lot of service companies drastically underestimate the complexity of school IT requirements, and think they can provide a much cheaper solution than the school would actually need. The rest tend to think we have similar budgets to a private sector business of the same size, so offer solutions that are unaffordable.

PM me if you get stuck. We use them on Windows 7 but not x64, so not 100% sure if Interwrite will support it or not. Edit: Apparently it has had 64-bit support since release 8.75.0169 January 2010, so you should be in business.

Just make sure it's not too hot if you're using canned air, or you might ignite the propellant. Seriously, that stuff is extremely flammable and I have heard of projectors creating a fireball if they are given a blast while on or too soon after turning off. That why I use a compressor.

Always nice to see an independent review that rates the wireless you've just bought (Ruckus) highly... Also very interesting to see how badly Meraki fared in their interference tests. This actually tallies with my own experience, so I'm glad it's not just me.

Best case scenario is that it's caked on dust rather than burned. We had one like this (though not as bad) that showed considerable improvement after dismantling and giving the optics a good blast with an air compressor.

Ours has been on for months and at least one AP still changes frequency every time it does a background scan (currently set to every 5 minutes). I haven't turned it off as a) it doesn't seem to cause any problems, and b) it's the only way to get the APs to use channels other than 1,5,9,13 or 1,6,11 without setting channels manually. We are in a residential area, so APs pop up nearby on all sorts of channels. I would rather it at least try to use some of the intermediate channels if they are free than sit on a channel that somebody nearby has stuck their home wi-fi on last Tuesday.

The relevant parts of the DPA are nothing more than the same parts that relate to onsite usage. There is nothing prescriptive in the DPA about remote access. The only part of our MIS we expose for remote access is basic contact details for pupils and those people listed as emergency contacts for each pupil. We give staff this because we would rather they access the data remotely using a (strong) password than print out the details on paper and leave them lying around somewhere on a trip. At one point there was strong guidance from the DCSF that remote access had to use two-factor authentication, but that guidance was swept away when the Tories got in, because we can just apparently do whatever we want now and market forces will determine who's right.

The only visual clue to it being IE10 instead of IE9 is that the scroll bars look like Windows 8 ones. No release date for final yet. Windows 8 has it already, obviously, but if you've rolled that out site-wide, you're a braver geek than I.

I'm glad it's not just me that thinks that. The amount of Exchange stuff I have to do in PowerShell is infuriating. And yes, you can distribute certificates via Group Policy. It's probably the easiest part of the whole process, actually.

Get support on the blower then - it's what you pay them for after all. Pretty sure you shouldn't be having any problems.

On Android 4 you should be able to Disable built-in apps once you have uninstalled the updates. I can do this on my stock HTC One X via Settings > Apps > All.

I've never had to make any special provision for Google Maps on our Smoothwall G3. It just works for us. Do you have other Google services blocked by default?

You can enable sideloading on Windows 8 Enterprise by joining the computer to a domain. The sideloading key is needed for everything else, including Enterprise off-domain.

"Very manageable" is a stretch, but the iOS app store is more manageable than this. It's still a bit of a pain to install apps en-masse though, as when you deploy apps using a management tool you have to confirm the install manually on the device - it doesn't install silently. There are also plenty of other iOS settings you can't remote manage, which is where Windows as a whole has the advantage, but the iOS app store definitely has the upper hand over Windows 8.

No, you can't preload apps direct from the store. The only way to make them available to all users at present is through the DISM/login script process. You are limited to 24 apps using this method, and you have to get hold of the .appx package somehow.

Does the 2910al let you assign ACLs to the VLANs? We have plenty of switches than can do L3 VLAN routing, but only our beefier core switch can assign ACLs and actually make VLAN routing useful.

What version of the SMART drivers are you running?

Microsoft App-V can handle deploying software everywhere with a licence count. I think you have to get it as part of of MDOP via EES or Schools Agreement though, it's not available separately.
