However, if you have been naughtily using a single purchase on multiple devices, then buy the correct number through VPP now. I'm not sure what to recommend if you later increase the number of devices using the single Apple ID, however.

They can only perform the Restore action if they have write access as per the normal NTFS ACLs. If your pupils have write access to large swathes of shared drives, you have a bigger problem brewing!

We blew through a system of that size in my first year, and we're a prep school. I would agree the data requirements for a secondary would be considerably higher if you are making comprehensive backups. If the only issue you're having with backups is storage space, I see no reason why a higher-capacity NAS wouldn't do the job just fine. We simply replaced the disks in our existing NAS for 2TB ones, and our data storage needs haven't grown to exhaust them yet.

Spotify was a nice easy one for me - I blocked it on the firewall on the grounds that use in schools is expressly forbidden by the ToS. People stopped trying to install it once they realised it wouldn't work.

The problem you are going to have here is that once you enable ip-routing, all the VLANs can talk to each other, so you are only separating broadcast and multicast traffic. All other traffic will pass between VLANs just fine, so your BYOD network is not secured from the main network. In order to secure the traffic, you need to define ACLs to stop traffic from passing unhindered - and the HP 4200 series does not support VLAN ACLs.

I have asked Dell support this exact question before, and they have explicitly told me that as long as the replacement is performed to a good standard, they would still honour the warranty on any other part failure. Unless their policy has changed, you should be OK.

I have that GPO enabled and a quick inspection suggests that none of the users whose profile was created since enabling it have the Windows Mail folder. However, users who pre-date that setting get the folder created locally even when logging on to a new computer.

They may be referring to the fact that when you buy Windows licences through volume licensing schemes such as EES or Schools Agreement, they are upgrade licences only, and there has to be a Windows licence (of any kind) on the box already. They may also have an agreement with Microsoft not to sell with no OS due to being an approved OEM for Windows licensing, therefore if they started supplying without, Microsoft could stop giving them OEM pricing.

It definitely worked earlier in the year when we purchased a bunch on non-Apple apps. Pretty sure SCCM doesn't work like that. This is however the way the GPO Software Installation works, so for packages that install using an MSI that could be an option. Peronsally I just put an 'out of use' sign on machines while they are rebuilding. Doesn't work if your users are morons, however.

I made the same point a while back and it was pointed out that Microsoft have Windows Live Custom Domains, a free service to use Windows Live accounts with your own domain name. It's not Office 365, but it does give you custom domains and a bit of centralised management. I'm not sure many businesses use the free tier due to the account limitations. But as a current user of the free Google Apps for my family domain, it is nice to have and it's a shame it won't be available to new customers.

As I understand it, the email provision in Office 365 is basically hosted Exchange 2013. Expect all the same features as OWA in 2010. The interface looks like Outlook.com. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it.

Agree with @Ric_, I think this is going to be something specific to the wireless system. Your ProCurve setup looks fine and is the same as I have setup up our ProCurve for VLANs; all my Ruckus APs and the controller are on access ports, I have not had to make them a trunk port.

I'm glad we don't use Impero. I'd have had some choice words for anyone I'd paid money to giving me such a rubbish suggestion.

Try using this: Windows Installer CleanUp Utility. Pretty sure that's how we fixed it when we had this problem in the past. Note that Microsoft no longer support the use of this tool, which is why I haven't provided a Microsoft link. The real problem is that the Flash .msi isn't a true .msi, it just wraps the .exe installer. Wrapped .exe installers are always unreliable and Adobe need to kill it with fire and make a real installer. Or kill Flash. I'm not fussy really.

Yep, I've encountered missing settings too. For us it was the ability to allow the computer to wake for scheduled tasks (which is disabled by default). My impression is that not all the settings in Windows 7 are actually supported in GPP. However, I've not seen any explanation of why this is the case other than usual one; that GPP is still the bastard step-child compared to Group Policy due to it being bought in from PolicyMaker.

You can define dependencies by adding a REG_MULTI_SZ value called DependOnService to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\ and then adding the name(s) of the service you want to depend on (the internal name, not display name). That said, I'm not sure I'd want to make the logon service dependent on a third-party service. If Impero malfunctioned you would likely be locked out of the local admin account too. What does Impero support have to say about the issue?

The vast majority of our printing is now done on 10x Canon iR C1028 MFPs on a lease as of last Christmas. They are very good. They replaced a mix of HP LaserJet 3600 (no end of driver problems), some Kyocera FS-C5100DN (deathly slow photo printing, same problem as @Little-Miss), and a Xerox 6125 which was costing us a fortune in toner and ate imaging units like they were hobnobs.

We have had Ruckus since the summer, only averaging about 25-30 concurrent users at the moment but it will handle all of those off one AP. No faults whatsoever so far. Also look after Meraki at another site. When iOS6 hit, none of the iOS devices could log into the captive portal any more and Meraki were next to useless when I asked for support. Admittedly iOS6 had trouble with several captive portal systems, but given the amount we pay for support I had expected at least a workaround other than 'turn off the captive portal', which is what I've done for now. Have not yet retested with 6.0.1, but have heard nothing from Meraki for over a month, and they closed the support case without comment.

The ideal solution is to get something complete separate. Our backup line is in a different building, but does feed back to the same street cabinet. That said, one is FTCC, the other is ADSL, and on different ISPs. As of yet, we've not lost both at the same time even when there was a problem at the exchange. Having it in a separate building also means that if the worst happens and the server room burns down, we can have something up and running very quickly. I suspect we've all experienced the agonising wait of how long a brand new DSL line can take to be provisioned.

Why on earth Spamhaus think you're hosting it is a mystery, but I've had my own problems with them falsely claiming we were sending spam and blacklisting our public IP, so I'm not terribly surprised. On the other hand, we were never notified in any official capacity of this happening. Where did you get notification from, if I might ask?

This box is misleading unfortunately: the "Printer Path" in the section you've used just tells Windows where to find the driver. Microsoft have decided that shared printers should not connected per-computer any more, they want them per-user. In Group Policy Preferences for the User Configuration, you can connect directly to the network shares rather than specifying the IP.

Do you mean you've created an MST file, not MSP? If so, you just need to create an INI file like this: [Package] Description=SMART Notebook 10.8 Version=10.8.364.0 OS=5.WS WIPackage=Notebook Software.msi CommandLine=ALLUSERS=1 WITransform=My transform file.mst Substitute in the correct filenames etc. and make sure you match the name of the .ini file with whatever is set as the Description. I think the Version field should match the name of your v1.1.1.0 directory, though I'm not sure why you've given it that name as I always named them with the actual version of the application, i.e. v10.8.364.0 or whatever the full SMART version number is.

Windows XP doesn't have built-in software RAID 5, but there are plenty of add-in cards that will work just fine under XP and will give you RAID 5 support. That said, unless you need the space efficiency of RAID 5, I would recommend simply using RAID 1 mirroring. RAID 5 doesn't give you any additional fault tolerance (more than 1 disk fails, and it's game over), and is more complicated to recover from if there is a failure.
