How long until you upgrade to WiFi 6?
ITGuyNW replied to TheHyperTechie's topic in Wireless Networks
We updated to a Cambium Wifi 6 system last year. They only run on the 1gb uplinks at the moment so when we do the network upgrade, may look at using the 2.5gb ports instead to squeeze out more worth -
I have just come out of the other side of this so good luck. My network was like yours, up and down all over the place. Mine turned out to be a Yealink phone going crazy. Made any other changes lately? Changed any cables? mini switches?

Hi all Looking at renewing our core and edge switches. I've signed up for CCS and I can view the emarketplace. Has anyone had any experience of this process or used RM6116? I've only ever approached companies directly before.

What do you look for in an IT supplier?
ITGuyNW replied to SimplyJade's topic in Recommended Suppliers
Easily contactable (its taken 10 emails so far to arrange a microsoft licence call with softcat. Phoenix took one) Easy to quote (some print companies lately won't even quote unless they know what else we've had already) Good warranty (previous "preferred" supplier of laptops took 6-8 weeks to replace faulty equipment, recent supplier took 48 hours)- 20 replies

HELP - Network issues and outside help
ITGuyNW replied to ITGuyNW's topic in Learning Network Manager
Who would like a conclusion? So the network was up and down all weekend again, with a spike at 12.30 every day. Now whenever the network was having an outage, different switches were going down, or smoothwall wouldn't talk, and any loops in the logs were just pointing at the uplink. So there was a loop or issue somewhere, just not on the switch I was looking at. On Tuesday, it went funny again however this time one of the switches in one particular building was offline. Checked the logs and it was saying a port was up/down constantly. Traced it to... a Yealink Teams phone. Since unplugging it yesterday at midday, I've had full network connectivity, no blips, no alarms, all back to normal. So for some reason, this teams phone, which is only about 6 months old, was flooding the network. -
Meanwhile I'm still trying to deal with Server 2012 devices ha

I guess it depends how much value you get out of it. As it includes Office, Intune, P1 licencing, you can justify the costs.

If phones come up for renewal again, I'd definitely do it a different way. Been chasing additional DDI since September and both the third party and Gamma keep pointing at each other.

I've just contact Phoenix about ours actually. Currently on A1, most on prem, however need benefits of A3, so need to see what can be done.

I'm also looking at our remote access options. Currently have RDS setup. Only reasons to log in are for SIMS and files held on network, everything else is cloud based. Staff have laptops that they use in school and at home. Is there a better way so I can bin off RDS?

Is there a link to any official confirmation about this? or is it just from phone calls and emails? (we've not had any emails about it)

Our finance department have just "upgraded" their main server and till software and now they crash every day, randomly go down etc. It's becoming a nightmare tbh.

I set this up the other day. Added the students to groups and they used those groups in mailflow rules to do what I needed. They're getting frustrated now they can't email each other memes.

HELP - Network issues and outside help
ITGuyNW replied to ITGuyNW's topic in Learning Network Manager
Examined Smoothwall and nothing in the logs suggested anything. Smoothwall and my two domain controllers couldn't ping each other properly for some reason. If it happens again, I'll have to do what @paulellam suggested and start from the core and do some process of elimination. -
5G Backup internet solutions
ITGuyNW replied to synaesthesia's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
I'm also looking at 5G backup. My existing provider do a backup line, but it seems to be more about equipment redundancy rather than an emergency alternative backup line. @Wave9_Lee do you have any literature or costs I can look at please? This may be something we look at down the line as more and more tech goes online. -

Yeah this next week will involve trying to figure out what it was. -
Hi all I'm looking at SIM cards at the minute. I'm after some I can just keep in a drawer and activate when it hits the fan. Looking at ones that use the three network as they have the best signal here. Looking at Smarty who do 30 day data only sims. Has anyone any experience with these?

HELP - Network issues and outside help
ITGuyNW replied to ITGuyNW's topic in Learning Network Manager
So morning update Everything was still in a dead state this morning. Gave Smoothwall a call and the box seemed fine and the issue seemed to connectivity between smoothwall and our two domain controllers. Getting pings every once in a while. Anyway, I've been in since 5am and at 8 I thought I need a break and a coffee. Sat down. 5 minutes later, everything is back up! Well the DCs now talk to smoothwall, smoothwalls fine! As if nothings happened! Although now, two cctv servers and a random fileserver cannot be pinged. They live in separate rooms too. Like someone said previously, maybe power cut and switch config? Its such a strange thing to be happening. -
HELP - Network issues and outside help
ITGuyNW replied to ITGuyNW's topic in Learning Network Manager
Just seems strange that it would suddenly happen at 12.30. I've not found any devices or anything that would affect this. If I ping the domain controllers from my flat network, replies are fine however if I ping Smoothwall, it gets a ping every 3 or 4 replies. I've not tried from another vlan yet. It just feels like a DNS/certificate type issue. I've had to come home now. I'm going to try and isolate some edge switches tomorrow and run some wireshark tests. As far as I'm aware, spanning tree is enabled throughout, however we never touch switch config or mess with the server room so I don't know why it would suddenly start acting up. - - - Updated - - - Thanks all by the way. Feeling pretty useless at the moment but I hope to find some answers tomorrow. -
HELP - Network issues and outside help
ITGuyNW replied to ITGuyNW's topic in Learning Network Manager
We have a couple of vlans, one for wifi and one for guest wifi. The rest is flat. Weve not done any updates, configs etc today or this week infact. 8.8.8.8 is giving me a reply every 3 or 4 tries. Firewall is doing the same. Mixed results. -
Hi all I'm still very much a newbie network manager and I need some help with an urgent issue. 12.30pm people started reporting internet connectivity loss. I thought it was external but BT said everythings normal. We use cambium wifi which have access points that talk directly to the Internet. Basically since 12.30pm everything is dropping in and out, DNS errors, aps up and down and im at a loss. This is also affecting phones which are teams based and registers, which again are through the internet. All servers are up. This is happening across site in every building. An AP will be up one minute, then goes again then comes back up and stays for 20 minutes before going again. Wired connection seems to be ok but browsing can be slow like theres a DNS issue happening. I've checked the domains, smoothwall, done reboots, checked certificates, event viewer and nothing out of the ordinary! Core switches all green lights, everything seems fine! It feels like a DNS or certificate type issue but then again I cant rule out something physical! So I need help and urgently. Is there anyone you can recommend to come in as an extra layer of tech support? Any companies or consultants who could help? I'm based on the Fylde coast.

ISP recommendations
ITGuyNW replied to TheHyperTechie's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
We are with BT Lancashire/Openreach. Been waiting since Summer to be upgraded from 100mb to 1gb. Now they're saying they don't have the equipment for the server room to do 1gb and that when they've done previous schools, there's been big issues. Can't be that hard surely?- 30 replies
