Forgot to mention it's a primary, so as basic Linux is, it'd be a chore teaching the children and staff around it. Also no O365 here, as to why though I've no idea, I'll be finding out! I know we are licensed for 7 and XP, not sure about 10 to be honest, could be worth a test build to see how they perform!

I imagine this is going to be a bit of a taboo subject, but at a school I've been asked to rebuild a load of Samsung NB30 netbooks (Atom Dual core, 1GB RAM, Win7 Starter). As it is at the moment, the last IT company who set these up left 7 Starter on and a few basic Apps, no network access or anything and they incredibly slow. Now the school can't afford at the moment to replace nor upgrade these netbooks for the time being, which leads me to my following question; XP or 7 Pro x32? I understand very well that XP should be dead and buried and all my other schools are now at least on 7, but I'm wondering here if I should make an exception? I know the Netbooks will run well on XP, they'll run Office 2010, provide access to Scratch and to the web, literally all they need to use them for. Am I crazy for thinking of using XP or is it somewhat logical? Any advice, help, hat and abuse welcomed!

Be interesting to see if they charge for this new system as it looks good in writing and having everything from just one place would be a god send!

As said, Xibo. I've found the intel CompuSticks thingys handle Xibo perfectly, best of all they're small, wireless, use barely any power and they're cheap! You can also run it on Android boxes, but this yields a small cost from Xibo, but given you can get a decent box for around £30, that could be a very cheap route too.

Usually do this through the supervision thing. Are the iPads supervised and assigned to an Apple ID? If not, APPs won't push out without prompting for user details.

That's right, you buy a licence for each tech that uses it, not how many clients or servers. Really cheap IMO for it is.

Skype for business is free for schools, all you need is IP handsets, not too sure on which, but then you can call internally and externally, plus they're on a wire. UniFi also do VoIP handsets based on Android, think they're £130 each and they are wireless too, so why the cost is more than a cheap mobile handset, it is more professional, reliable and mainly manageable. Also the control software is free.

We have it installed on our base image in all primary schools, so it's there when needed, although I would really say it's more for children in Higher Education, or at the very least, Y6 pupils. I've sat in on lessons where they've used it in a primary and the kids do get stuck a bit and the apps they make are very basic at most.

What about Skype for business or UniFi?

If the main switch gives out to two other switches and I'm guessing server and a couple of other things, I'd be looking at a full Gigabit 24 port switch (New Netgear ones are £99 with lifetime guarantee), it'll definitely ease up the bottlenecks and increase speeds a bit!

Is the current switch Gigabit? Also are the hubs all in one place or scattered about where there is say only on Ethernet point but 3 PCs? And I'd recommend D-Link and NetGear, never had an issue with both, plus D-Link offer the 10Gb stackable switches at a very good price now, I'm pushing for these in a few schools at the mo' that are a bit tight on budget but have a lot of equipment.

Is a tough call, but I'd be worried that if I bought a lamp, it'd blow it. Maybe try swapping the lamps around in the units or at least inspect them? That way you'll get a good indication of whether it is the lamp or the projector.

From experience the SMART projectors were never much cop. I've had issues in the past with colour wheels, lamps, to just not turning on. I also know others who have had similar issues. Is it not feasible to upgrade?

I'd use SSDs, price has plummeted so much over the last year that I'm confused when we are still installing Servers and PCs in schools with mechanical drives!

I've used Recuva in the past and various other tools to recover files for customers, software was relatively cheap (had 2/3 programs) and the boss used to charge an arm and a leg for the privilege, but people would pay.

Surely the files are backed up on the server?!

What model UPS have you got and what power does your server draw under load? It could be that the UPS isn't powerful enough to deal with the server when it is under a heavy load and would explain the messages you're getting.

Just been reading up on Server 2016 licencing and it seems microsoft are licensing some of the new server OSs per core as opposed per socket/CPU, reported to be 25% more expensive than previous. It seems good and it says the units are 'cheap', but has no mention of how many unit's you'd need, I imagine multiple in each room. LEDs have a long life span, but if a few fail I imagine that could cause headaches troubleshooting. Even if it was faster, installing say 50 APs throughout a school sounds much easier than maybe 500 of these bulbs. Just have to wait and see what details they bring out, the diagram shown on the link shows 4 LiFi lamps in one smallish looking room, so from that I'm guessing the range isn't great. So many questions I have about it aha. As for the sewar thing, don't want to be giving the rats internet now do we?!

I've been following this myself. Does it work when the lights are off though? How do they handle roaming? Could it work outdoors? Surely if a business were to have such a product, the costs would surely out weigh conventional WiFi and leave a lot of black spots?

Can you not just bring in a new bank statement with your new acc. no, sort code and other froms of ID? Then there is no way to say it isn't you and no doubt you'll have to sign something acknowledging changes too. Sounds odd to me, but I'm no accountant.
