You know Mac Minis are only about £360 brand new with EDU discount. It'd make sense to buy that as you know it will get the minimum 4 years of updates you require! They only come with 4GB RAM and 500GB HDD, but to be honest I've found it is more than enough for managing a bulk lot of iPads. I think it's only around an extra £20 to turn it into a server too, should you want profile manager.

At least I feel relieved I got rid of the chain, I thought it was generally bad practice. Whilst there is no core switch per say, I have treated one of the spare HP Switches as a core switch if you will, all the switches are connected via this unit, including the server, WiFi controller, NAS backup and anything else of relative importance. In a primary, we have just put in all new CAT6 cabling and HP switches in a central location. When I linked all the switches up, all 6 dasiy chained one off the other, with the last in the chain being completely empty, so I thought it would be best to use the empty HP switch, to connect the other switches and server and act as a core if you will. Now the switches are gigabit and the speeds don't seem great, around 5-10MB/s from client to client, I was expecting somewhere of at least above 50MB/s, could it be due to the speed of the client disks (7200rpm) or the switch config/arrangement? Also I'm wondering if I should keep the empty switch acting as a 'core' or daisy chain them, unless they offer a stacking feature? I'm not sure. Any help/advice is appreciated.

Everything is soldered on the board in the new Macs, so there really isn't much salvageable at all. Could strip it down and clean it with isopropyl alcohol, see if it works, but I'm guessing the damage is done. On the plus side, they sell for decent money when they're screwed on the bay, but there's also the fact your data could still be on there, so bin it may have to be!

New schools tend to have it integrated with the fire alarm system, works really well. As mentioned, it is possible to retrofit this system, but I'd imagine it'd all depend on the age of the fire alarm system and what sounders it uses. Will the UniFi offering is good, what would its life span be? Technology does tend to change and within ten years, you could be wanting new WiFi and there's no telling if UniFi or another company would offer this later down the line. I'd personally go for the retrofit of the fire alarm if possible or a PA system. Whilst the cost could be higher, they are stand alone, have excellent reliability and redundancy and a much longer lifespan, especially with the PA side, schools are still using speakers a few decades old now.

Can vouch for those switches, got a few in some schools, interface is nice and easy and they've yet to give us any grief!

Obviously having everything on switch is ideal as it'll be faster copying multiple files from device to device, but even if you had to buy a couple of small 12 ports switches, you could have Wireless, Server, PCs on the main and things that don't need as much transfer speed like your consoles, cameras and TVs on the second.

Maybe a few years ago this had been true, with Moore's law being more accurate then, but over the past few years we have hit a slow down and the life span of machines seems a lot longer than that of their predecessors. Heck, I'm typing this off a 2010 i7 MBP and this thing is still quick!

How many physical devices will be connected too and what will they be? Would you occupy 24 ports?

What is the plan over the next few years? If there are plans to get new kit and replace old kit, it makes sense now to spend that few quid extra and get the slightly better gear IMO. Don't think in this year I'd consider less than all gigabit given the pricing on some switches and the majority of PCs over the last 10 years came with gigabit ethernet.

I've seen some on US eBay, they sell for around £100 for a complete set of 30 and £200ish for 60, so as a rough guide between £1/200 I'd say.

Not interference from the speakers is it? I've heard PSUs do this in the past. Maybe do it by process of elimination? Swap the computer out for a day or so, ask under what conditions does it happen, is the projector on at the time, the speakers?

If I'm right in thinking though, if you don't use ears and get maybe a shelf or sit it on something or place it at the bottom, it should fit just behind the rack mount rails as the cab itself is obviously wider.

The D-Link DGS-1100-24P looks like it may suit your needs, although I'm not 100% sure on the dimensions!

It could be cheaper or a similar price to get a new system such as UniFi, that or see how much a used ZoneDirector is and pair them up if it's possible. I've done this with the netgear stuff as it was a lot cheaper than buying the licenses.

I think they may be supported up until maybe iOS 10, they seem to kill them off on the big updates, but I'd be expecting to replace them soon. They've had a decent run, but they are getting on the slow side now.

As I'm a noob with GAFE and Chrome OS, is there anyway to authentic through AD or present their home drives?

1GB OR 2GB RAM? At another school I had a basic stripped down build, aero off, core apps only and a couple of other bits, ran great but they had 2GB RAM and it makes a hell of a difference
