Hi, Looking for some inspiration really on making a budget iPad charge station, so I was wondering, what have people fashioned up at work when they have a few spare parts or the budget won't allow for the real deal? I've used old classroom tray drawers on wheels before with chargers wired is as a cheap trolley aleternative!

IMO it's never safe to sweep through a building that could potentially be on fire. You wouldn't immediately know where the fire was, how quick it could spread, if there is any fuel that could make it go up quicker, etc, etc. This is why we have fire alarms and why we are told not to go near the building until we have been given the all clear.

Played the RCT World demo the other day, now just for the full game to come out!

Usually if it's site wide, it's a School holiday job for me. I'll prep the images and test them during term time and roll them out over summer. Or if you can't do it in the holiday's, you'll just have to book them out of use for a day per class trolley, which providing the image is perfected, shouldn't really be an issue.

Are the costs for the UniFi and EdgeSwitch with PoE similar?

Which ones did ypu go for and I'm guessing you're going to be using the 10Gb stack feature?

Think the 48 Port one came in around £660 with 500W PoE, does sound tempting now!

It was the 10Gb stacking that drew me in to be honest, I have UniFi switches at other schools and like how easy it is to team the ports, just never dealt with the edge stuff.

A school we manage has a bit of a spiders web of a network, all 3 switches are currently 100Mbps, with a few gigabit PoE switches coming of them for the WiFi, so as you could imagine, speeds sometimes get slow. Now to be honest I could as it stands, probably get away with getting rid of the 3x24 port switches and going to just one 48 port with PoE, so if the price and spec is decent I may be swayed. Min requirements are gigabit, with some PoE ports. I've been looking at the UniFi Edge switches, I was thinking of getting one or two of these, just wondering what experience people had?

Must agree on the finance thing, whilst appealing, I'd feel a bit robbed when I give it back. Looked into all the other week when my car got wrote off and ended up buying a Lupo GTI, probably one of the best GTIs ever made. It's quick, has loads of extras, cheapish to run and it just looks so cool. They're not mega cheap (800ish in the Uk made), but they're holding value and going up. I love it.

We use file explorer, with an account setup with permissions to access an iPad share only. In the share, we put a folder for each year group, then they choose the pics they want, upload them to the share and they can then see that share on their machine. Have to set each iPad up, but if it's only 8, it'll take you no time at all.

Good in theory, but given the students, I doubt the pen drives would make it back to us!

Does it clear web history and cookies too?

It's more from a data protection point of view really. They'll be locked down heavily anyway, but I want to make sure any internet history/downloaded files are gone and this seems the best way forward to be honest. Never really used SteadyState so may have a quick read. As for the Porteus, thought about it, but they need to have Java, Flash, Silverlight and a couple other runtimes, so makes sense sticking with Windows really.

In that case fair enough! They should chain fine, obviously just document any chaining for the next poor soul. Amount of schools I go to and you find mini switch and ancient hubs stuffed behind cabinets, drawers, even in the caretakers office and sometimes you have a chain of 2/3, so I then spend all day tracing things! haha

I can't see any reason why not, but I'd always recommend running independent data points for APs, then you can utilise all the bandwith and what not. Where you be putting an AP if you were going to daisy chain?

They get given a dongle or connect to their WiFi, so there isn't an actual need for anything to be saved to the machine, they do all their work online via various websites and virtual learning platform. Plus I'm on site 3 hours a week and there's 20 machines that change hands weekly, so it's getting a bit much for me!

Cheers, I'll have a look at that! I have been looking at a product called Time Freeze, it's free and I've just installed and ran it on a client and it seems pretty good. Anyone else have experience with this?

At the minute we have a lot of laptops which go home to students to use for online learning. Obviously when these come back they need to be wiped. I've looked into Deep Freeze, is there anything else similar? (free/open source is preferable)

I agree. The dome cameras look very good value for the money and it will probably be the easiest to implement!

Saw this. Seems of reasonable value, if I was a millionaire I would have definitely bought it by now.
