  1. the SSD would be my guess, especially if they're starting to fail or if these are an off-brand model.
  2. Our Estates team uses it - mostly for compliance tracking as well as a helpdesk, they also agree its clunky and horrible to use. Provided by the MAT but I pay for it for some reason. Last I heard, the MAT were looking for alternatives as they themselves agreed it wasn't great either.
  3. We've got CCTV in our IT suites which does cut the damage down somewhat, though I wouldn't say it eliminates it since whoever is teaching in the room at the time also needs to take some level of responsibility for what goes on in their lessons. In my last place, we were replacing keyboards & mice all the time and having to buy the absolute cheapest carp we could get our hands on for replacements. Current place with the CCTV, it's a negligible amount and it deters the majority of students as they realise they're being watched. It also means we can put nicer Microsoft/Logitech/Cherry stuff in the rooms. It doesn't stop the really determined/bored students but at least we have some form of attack against the damage that happens.
  4. Not putting "https://" at the beginning of the URL was what it was. Thanks @ZeroHour
  5. Has anyone ever redirected a URL using Cloudflare? Our old 'schoolname.county.sch.uk' URL points to our old website (which actually isn't there anymore as of a few days ago) and we've got a new website at a new domain which is essentially 'schoolname.co.uk'. I'm trying to set up a redirect in Cloudflare where our old domain is managed; I've tried setting up both a hostname redirect and a page rule but neither seem to work correctly and I can't figure out why. So I've had it set where 'www.schoolname.county.sch.uk' OR 'schoolname.county.sch.uk' redirect to 'www.schoolname.co.uk' with a HTTP status of 301 Permanent Redirect. However, when I test it on a computer outside of our network, Firefox will redirect to 'https://schoolname.co.uk/www.schoolname.co.uk' and Chrome/Edge tries to redirect to 'https://www.schoolname.county.sch.uk/www.schoolname.co.uk', neither of which works properly as it seems to either prepend the old domain or the new one. I've still got the old A DNS records set which point to the old webhost IP but these are set to 'Proxied' instead of 'DNS only' as that's what it suggested when I set up the redirects. Any help is welcome.
  6. We had this one more than one occasion which resulted in us doing the same. It probably didn't help that in order to keep costs down, we'd bought the absolute cheapest cases out there and on one such case, the 5.25" panels used to fall out without any user intervention. Mind you, we even had one such occasion where we suspect a student dropped a PC out of an under desk holder, unscrewed the case, unscrewed the motherboard (along with RAM and CPU), shoved this in their bag and put the computer case back in place, in their hope not to arouse suspicion and no one saw this happen. We didn't have CCTV in IT rooms either so we had no chance at catching whoever it was
  7. Since it's only one computer I need to keep awake, I'm very happy to try this if it works. EDIT: Yep, it works and we're 15 mins and counting. Thanks!
  8. Sorry to bump this after so long, but this is happening to me at the moment and it's really doing my head in! 😠 We have a laptop that the Exams Officer uses to display Examscreen in our main hall (we used to have a desktop but SLT & Trust decided otherwise) so it's preferred that the screen stays on for the length of an Exam. We set up specific user accounts that have no screen timeout, though we've also since set up a power policy just for that laptop, to turn off any known power saving features. No matter what policies I set, the screen still times out after 10 minutes... as if MS have hard coded it in for some reason. I thought I had sorted it yesterday after a reddit post which suggested setting 'ScreenSaveActive' to 0 in the registry under 'HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop'. I'd set up a user account with this set to 0 and logged it into a test laptop. The screen stayed on for well over 2 hours, so I thought 'YAY'. This morning however, Exams Officer has just reported to me that although it worked fine yesterday, it's now timing out after 10 mins again... Aarrrgh.
  9. I seem to remember from past experience (and I've just tested it now) that this only happens if you're already logged into a PC and you RDP into it after you've changed the password. Effectively what happens is it'll let you in with the old password and then prompt you to lock and unlock the PC to update its cached credentials. If you RDP into a computer without any user logged in, it won't allow you to login with old credentials.
  10. Technically, we're already paying for those people to be here (one of those is me) and they were doing said back-end admin work 4 years ago before we moved to the TES products.
  11. I wouldn't mind but the products offered by TES aren't particularly cheap compared to the competition, and the costs of these rise exponentially with each passing year. We use about 3 products from them and if I could fund alternatives, that's a £11k saving right there.
  12. I dunno, you could be supporting Geobooks where to fix them requires taking the whole thing apart while breaking off bits of plastic in the process, unplug and re-plug the battery before it'll work again.
  13. Yep, had all that. The remote toner ordering works so I'm not sure why this other bit doesn't.
  14. This is what I have set for our Printers VLAN. As far as I can see, it shouldn't be inspecting traffic. I will do that.
  15. Is there anyone on here who has Ricoh copiers and Smoothwall for their Filtering & Firewall? Also wasn't sure where to put this as although it's a Printer issue, it's also a Filtering/Firewall issue. Our Print provider is Ricoh who use a service on the copiers called Optim for remote access to the copiers as and when they need to. The process requires someone to be at the copier to launch the remote access session which is then supposed to generate a code, which is given to the support person who can remote into the copier to sort any issues where a physical visit isn't required. The problem I have, is you launch the remote access session and it sits on a connecting screen for what seems like forever. I looked at the firewall logs where I could see it was dropping a connection to a certain IP that it uses. I've since allowed that IP address through the firewall with the relevant ports and I can now see that it allows the connection. I've checked the filtering side where I can also see it launching a browser session to another IP address but it says HTTP 200 OK which I assume should be allowing it to launch, however it still doesn't get past the screen that says 'connecting'. I'm now stuck as I don't now know where to go with this as the logs suggest everything should be fine?
  16. These are fragile devices where simple changes can cause them to not power on. Unfortunately, I'm having to nurse 20 of them where we ended up using them for SEN students (because budgets were tight) but they haven't held up well at all. Issues like these are usually sorted by unplugging the battery, waiting a few moments and plugging back in. They soon start up again. I wish I could replace the sods, but alas not enough budget to do so.
  17. Easier said than done. Like in my post above, I have the funds but someone else always controls the purse strings and if they won't budge, there's very little I can do about it.
  18. It's a bit like me at the moment. I've not renewed our support contract as our Trust's Finance dept. have put a hold on orders which means my requisition is still sitting, waiting for processing. This means that when I can, my renewal will end up having a 25% markup on the renewal cost. I'm sure Veeam have their reasons for it but these companies are used to dealing with Private Sector (& some Public Sector) companies/organisations where they can pay for renewal as and when without issues, but rarely do they give any sort of leeway for Public Sector Schools where finances for us aren't always available as and when. I have one other company who often charges us a 'late payment charge' as they often invoice us during holidays where our local finance person doesn't always work during that time. I tried to argue that one but they won't change their way of working just for Public Sector Schools.
  19. crinkle (cut)
  20. Similarly related, we've got 2 class sets of Lenovo 100e Gen 4 Chromebooks with the newer Mediatek MT7921 SoC which now has me worried, as all of our ASUS C202XA's have the Mediatek MT8173C SoC similar to the Lenovo ones with the 81QC code and we've had about 30 of these all die in the same way (i.e. No OS and they won't take a charge) with some of these all dying within the last few weeks. I've got some similar age ASUS Chromebooks which have Intel chips and are fine, which makes me wonder if there's a failure within the SoC itself. I'm kind of hoping (in a way) it's just an issue with the MT8173C and it isn't a bug that affects newer Mediatek SoC's
  21. Just to clarify, the 600 G2 is a ProDesk, not an EliteDesk in case that's why you couldn't find them on the list. According to the list the ProDesk 600 G2 is Cerfified since ChromeOS 103 and is supported until 2027.
  22. I only ever got the official Dell ones to work with ours and I tried loads of other brands. Think they're probably locked to a specific Vendor ID.
  23. Strange yours has a "B Key" slot as I have one here and it has an "M Key" slot and the orientation of mine is different (i.e. the keyed bit is on the side of the daughterboard ribbon cable connector) & I'd guess yours may be a SATA-only slot whereas mine supports NVMe drives. It may be an American vs European model difference.
