I've just assumed that the SWGfL-supplied Cisco Router was set up enough to allow the two subnets to talk to each other. However, I'm starting to think that there's something else I need to do for it to work properly. I'm tempted to set up a PC with Untangled just to see whether its possible to keep it all as a flat network but unfortunately time has got the better of me and i'm still waiting for a nice quiet period when I can try this. I've looked at VLANs but quite frankly they scare me.

Funnily enough, we also requested another block of IPs from the SWGfL but I have yet to get the second block to talk properly to the first. As it stands, I've got the second block set up as a scope in a DHCP Superscope, clients which end up with an address in the second block can access some of our Intranet pages and most other resources - however some users have reported their user experience as being rather slow if their PC ends up in the second range and have even had users report not being able to access certain web-based resources. Symantec Ghost seems only able to see clients in our original block and not the second as is sometimes the case with ThinStation. If someone has got a good solution to this, i'd certainly love to hear it.

It's worth looking for Award BIOS beep codes since Award is owned by Phoenix, and AFAIK most newer Phoenix BIOSes use code based on the Award BIOS firmware. Also, I think those Phoenix codes are a bit old. EDIT: This site gives beep codes in a sequence of 4 - http://www.bioscentral.com/beepcodes/phoenixbeep.htm EDIT2: 4-2-3-3 is Extended Block Move which one website suggests a conflict between a PCI-E Graphics card and Onboard Graphics.

Back when I was in Infant School (many years ago), we had a TV that had to be hit quite hard on the side a few times before Channel 4 would work. BBC and ITV were fine, but at the time all the good schools progs were on C4. Especially the ones we could clap and sing along to. Ahh, good times.

I have briefly heard of them as a school in the town I live in (incidentally the one I went to years ago) has a number of Core2Duo based SFF Desktops purchased from them. As far as i'm aware, they have been reasonably happy with the build quality of them.

Try going into 'Programs and Features', 'View installed updates' (link at the side) and look for the following update: "Update for Microsoft Windows (KB971033)". Found it? Uninstall it. Although its a perfectly legitimate update that's supposed to update Windows' Activation and Validation mechanism, this update caused my own PC at home to take somewhere between 5-7 minutes to get past the Welcome screen. Removing it cut the time down to about 15-20 seconds. It isn't a widely known problem though, as it doesn't affect the majority. It took me another install on a Laptop recently to find that update to be the culprit when it also hung on the Welcome screen.

For a server that was only set up on the 20th, there's been a very impressive amount of building going on. On another note i'm quite enjoying MineCraft, although i'm really not doing very well having died three times and still haven't built anything yet!

I've spoken to people before who have also been unsure about AMD laptops, not sure why though. The laptop i'm using to type this now is an AMD Turion 64 based HP Compaq nx6125 which i've had now for about just over 3 years without any issues. It's still nice and quick, doesn't get too hot and I think quite comparable to an Intel based laptop. I think the one you've posted is a very well spec'd laptop that I personally wouldn't hesitate getting, mainly because i've always bought HP laptops.

I've found this to be the case that if logging in using only a username without the machine name prefixed, Windows XP often assumes that the account used must be one the remote PC whereas Vista & 7 both assume that the account must be on the local PC, not the remote one. Hopefully that made sense.

I think what you'll need to do is to enable the following policy; User Configuration->Admin Templates->Windows Components->Windows Explorer->Turn off Windows+X hotkeys in conjunction with the 'Remove Lock Computer' policy which will stop students from using either way to lock their machines. This does disable all the other WinKey+? shortcuts as well, but as none of them are required by our students it hasn't been a problem for us.

I don't have the exchange 2007 management tools installed on any of my backup exec servers, and exchange backs up correctly for me. I've even had to restore mailboxes (and occasionally items within a mailbox) several times without fault. So i'm not sure why you would need them installed to backup exchange.

A side note to this (and hopefully goes without saying) is to make absolutely sure that no service, scheduled task, etc relies on the administrator account so that when someone does leave, resetting the password doesn't screw something up and force you to go 'round fixing anything that is reliant on that account! Makes it a lot easier 'if' you were to give out the password to the 4 technicians and then 'maybe' decided to take it away at a later date (or something like that.)

You've got it in one. I guess I overreacted a bit with our 4650's, they produce a very nice print that our Art Dept. is reasonably happy with, the toners last a fair while & the drivers actually work, but our paper (and we've tried a few different brands) doesn't like feeding through the printers. We seem to have a particular brand at the moment that isn't misfeeding as much as others were (almost not at all) but occasionally we still get the odd paper jam. We did ask our Head of Art to try storing her paper somewhere that wasn't damp, but this didn't seem to make any difference. Although we bought these refurbished rather than new, I still would have thought that our supplier would have checked the paper feed on both printers before selling them. Also, I don't hate HP's older printers (about 2004 and older) of which we have quite a few and are satisfied with, I just don't think very highly of any of their newer printers which seem to have all sorts of problems with them.

I've found installing the 2600n driver update via Windows Update (on your 2003 server rather than on the clients) helps... A LOT. HP's drivers for this printer are just terrible. Once we did this, our umpteen 2600's became fairly trouble free, at least on the software side of things. We do get odd printout quality issues every now and then, but they're easily sortable. However, YMMV. Footnote: I've really gone off HP printers - used to swear by them. Once upon a time, they used to make some of the best workhorses money could buy, then they reached a somewhat rocky period where by they made some good printers (CLJ 3800 - bought one 4 years ago and still haven't had any problems with it) and some real naff ones (CLJ 4650 - complete waste of time AFAIK, have 2 of them and (I) wish we'd never bought them.) Nowadays, all printers HP churn out are a complete load of toss, and would happily not recommend any of their printers to anyone.

My guess would be that a Visual C++ developed application which is running on your workstation(s) is requesting a dependancy in a file which isn't presently there. For a start, try installing the Visual C++ 2005 Runtime Files located here, and then see if it still keeps coming back.

It's difficult not to mention the OS, as what you are using is an unsupported, illegal, cracked, pirated, non-official copy of a Microsoft Operating System. To make matters worse (for yourself) you're also dropping your friends in it by admitting that you and they are using Pirated copies of Windows. In short: Windows 7 Black Edition is a pre-release copy of Windows 7 that has had it's expiry date (timebomb) and activation cracked so that they are no longer present, and is so very illegal (at least here in the UK it is but I doubt the laws are much different in NL) and i'm almost certain is against the rules of this forum (although I couldn't find them in time for this post.) With that out of the way, I suggest that you should remove the aforementioned 'Black Edition', buy yourself a legal, genuine copy of Windows 7 (if you haven't already) and refrain from posting until you sort this out. Even if you are experiencing 'lagging', it's no excuse for running a pirated copy of Windows.

First of all, i'd be questioning why he's still running a Release Candidate copy of Windows 7. If he's got access to MSDNAA, then surely he should be able to download the RTM. People using the RC were told a while back to upgrade to the RTM as soon as possible as the RC would eventually switch to Reduced Functionality mode (e.g. certain features become unavailable for use and a 2-hour limit before it blue screens and reboots AFAIK - similar to what someone might experience if they were not running with a genuine copy of windows) which might explain why he cannot access any DVD's within Windows 7. The first thing he should try is obtaining and installing the RTM of Windows 7, since this might just solve his problem.

Just noticed in General Chat that the birthdays for Tcsltd & edebonis have been posted by the birthday bot several times, and these are occuring at 12 minutes past each hour. There is also several separate threads, again posted at 12 mins past each hour for the users colio66 & ian586. Im sure it never used to do this, although maybe the bot is getting a bit over-excited about these birthdays.

Although, we had a Parents Evening the previous day and assumed that the Head of ICT had been cooking one of his usual smelly meals in the Microwave (however, said Microwave is usually known for amplifying the smells of food cooked in it) and we were about ready to rile him over it. Once we'd opened all the doors and windows and waited about an hour, we realised that it couldn't be that, and set to try and find the source of the smell. It was discussed that it did smell a bit like an electronic burning smell so I started sniffing around our IT equipment. I did find though that while sniffing around, it was difficult to find the source of the smell as it seemed as strong no matter where I sniffed, so ended up leaving it for a few hours hoping that the smell would dissipate some more while we got on with some work. Eventually, while fiddling with the NM's telephone (can't remember why though,) I realised that his UPS - an APC Smart-UPS 700 for those who are curious - was forcing out quite considerably more heat than mine and when I put my hand on it, I was surprised it hadn't caught fire by now as it was probably well over 60°C. At the point of disconnecting and moving it to a more ventilated area (which we did with a towel as it was so hot) I did manage to get the batteries out (had to wait an hour and half for the UPS and batteries to cool down enough to touch them) which were literally bursting at the seams and looked as if it might have reached the point where it could have exploded. Knowing what we know now, if a smell occurs like that again, I think we would be able to diagnose the problem before it ever escalates to a critical point like this one did. What I don't understand though is if APC (and other manufacturers probably) know that batteries can get like this and even potentially explode, why there isn't something like a temperature sensor (separate from a Management card) that detects that the batteries are getting too hot and shut the unit down? However, seeing as the UPS is about 6 or 7 years old, it may not have been fitted with such a failsafe and maybe newer ones are but I don't know for sure.

Adobe Premiere Elements 2.0 Shows an invalid registration error on startup after using sysprep. Switched to installing via gpo after a clone using the included MSI which now means that although it works, it now asks all students to register the software each time, everytime, and regularly corrupts student's project files - they get a message about not being able to open Premiere Pro files in Elements which I believe is a load of cack. Oh, and we occasionly get students where once they open the program, it closes itself back down again. +1 for Edexcel Promissor - complete waste of time. Mine is installed on an old P4 tower, thing is I would like to stick it into a VM, but everytime I've ever attempted to do this, I get all sorts of error messages. I even tried following the original instructions, but it seems to be clinging on to the original PC.

All very well and good until you realise that it's not set to boot from CD in the BIOS. Oops.
