The RSS feed that displays the 10 Newest Forum Threads (I think its 10 though iGoogle will only let me see 9) seems to have stopped updating. The last thread it displays is this one: http://www.edugeek.net/forums/windows/81818-cloud-based-abacus.html which was created last Thursday (08/09/2011). There have been a fair few new threads since then which are not being displayed in the feed.

Surprising, as Panasonic still put proper on/off switches on their tellies as opposed to LG's where the majority can still only be turned off into standby (unless you're one of those who turn it off at the 'leccy socket.)

Have you tried putting dban.iso outside of the x86 subfolder or rather putting x86 as part of the path, e.g. APPEND iso initrd=/x86/dban.iso. I have a feeling that the x86 subfolder is not the tftp root folder.

According to this (rather short) thread on the MSI forums: Wake Up Even Setup - Resume By PCI/PCI-E - how to use LAN? the solution might be to use the "Resume by PCI or PCI-E Device" in this motherboard's BIOS. I've also tried the same option on a couple of ASUS boards (missing a WOL option but not the Resume by PCI/PCI-E option) with some success.

Are you typing a "/" before anything else, as this will also (annoyingly) bring up the keytips in what Microsoft dub "Lotus Compatibility" in the Options Menu. The option to change the key used is in Options -> Advanced, under the heading "Lotus Compatibility" and is called "Microsoft Excel menu key".

To be honest, we don't have very many old servers anymore. We've got a lot of Dell kit bought within the last 3-4 years or so, so not as bad as you might think. As for storage: 4 1TB NAS's, 3 Dell PowerVault MD1000 storage arrays probably totalling approx 30TB (some for backups), etc... Thing is, we tend to use the old adage "If it aint broke, don't fix it" and technically these servers aren't broken, they could just do with a little bit more RAM. However, if RAM is going to be near impossible to get for these, then it just might be the right time to retire them from use. As I mentioned above, I'd really like to step into Virtualisation as even I think we've got too many servers (probably 30 odd now) which we ended up with because my NM's boss prefers one task to one server; he feels it's more reliable that way as one task doesn't have to share its resources with another. My colleagues all feel that VM's are a good way to go but as NM's boss is the budget holder, it hasn't happened in my favour. That said, I have a Hyper-V set up on a Dell PE1950 that became spare when we gave up using Sharepoint; but because storage is an issue, it only has stuff that doesn't require much storage.

We have 4 in total which originally had 1GB RAM each. One Used to be a McAfee ePO/WSUS server (originally with 1GB) but was too slow in the end so isn't being used. One is an Impero v3 server using the extra RAM out of the one above giving it 2GB. One is a Application server which had 2 modules recently die leaving it with 512MB. The last one is a Windows Server 2008 based Domain Controller which also has 1GB RAM. Technically, they're all fairly light-ish uses which kind of explains why we're still using them. Ideally I'd prefer to virtualise, but the NM's line manager (who oversees both IT support as well as the Teaching side) is a bit of a non-believer when it comes to virtualisation*, so we really haven't invested anything in it yet. On the flip side, if I have to replace them with newer physical servers, they would have to be quite cheap but still rackmount as space is at a premium.

Thanks for the offer, but unfortunately they're a bit too tall. I've just measured one of a pair of faulty modules that came out of one of the servers. They would need to be around 30mm or shorter. It turns out that 1U server cases are 43mm tall so would not be any good.

I'm starting to pull my hair out over this one at the moment... Does anyone know someone who's willing to part with or somewhere that will sell 512MB or 1GB 168-Pin ECC Registered PC-133 SDRAM for an Intel SCB2 Server Motherboard in an Intel SR1200 1U Rackmount server case? As it is a 1U case, the modules need to be low or normal profile. I've gone to several companies who only sell the high profile modules designed for 2U+ cases. It would be nice to replace these servers at a later date as their getting on a bit, but as there is no allocation of funds for this, a RAM upgrade is the more cost-effective solution right now. In that case i'll retract that and instead say that "i'm being ever such a tiny bit silly tonight" I wouldn't normally put myself down like that, just that the neighbour's kids (both sides of us) have been so noisy today, I haven't been able to concentrate properly and have been making loads of silly mistakes. Saying that, it's not really my fault, so i'm not really a numpty at all. Back on topic: Just a suggestion, is it possible or rather would it look better if you implemented tabs (like a properties window) so that all the commands are on the first tab and the proxy selectors on another tab. Just to tidy it up a bit i'm thinking.

Surprisingly, my 12 to 2010 upgrade seemed to go alright when I did it, was expecting all sorts of things to go wrong given how frustratingly broken the software always seems! I had to input new product keys as one would expect to, but it was pretty much incident free. Of course with anything like this, Your Mileage May Vary. Right now however, I'm doing an upgrade from 2010 RTM to R3 (to fix some exchange backup issues I hope), should be as straightforward as 12 to 2010 but I won't hold my breath.

I've never quite understood why some manufacturers choose to put their device's firmware onto hard disks. To me it seems rather inconvenient when something happens like in your case or in the case of the Buffalo Terastation - when one decides to up the capacity by swapping out all hard disks in one go (and finding it won't work as the firmware is stored on the first disk) instead of swapping one disk at a time while rebuilding the array for each disk swap, which will work but is very time consuming.

I certainly don't see a problem in doing this as there is nothing particularly special about the Default Domain Policy as it is just like any other Group Policy, except its meant to be applied to the whole domain instead of certain OUs.

I found this rather useful utility sometime ago (which pretty much does what you describe) but never got around to implementing it. Panic Button It runs in the systray, the user single-clicks the icon and they get a confirmation that their screenshot is sent. Then you get an email giving you an attached screenshot, date and time taken, hostname, username & an IP address.
