I have recently bought a dvi to HDMI cable in order to plug my pc into my Plasma screen tv... however when i plug it in an error comes up on my tv saying video not supported. i have changed the resolution on the pc by connecting it to a moniter via VGA but no luck... any ideas?

I went looking for TVs today and ran across a brand new Sony on special. So I try it with the usual media files on a USB key to see how it will work with my extencive library of media files. Guess how many it managed to play? None, thats right not a single one. End result, a nice new Samsung TV. Sure it has a few less features but it actually plays things that have not been blessed by Sony. I knew it was a bad sign when I looked up the TV online and what kinds of files it played were not listed anywhere. I had no idea they weren't listed because there was nothing to put in the list. Admittedly I did not put in a JPG or MP3 as I did not even have a doubt that anything would be unable to play them (not so sure now). But Xvid, MKV, even DIVX were all a bust.

Can anyone recommend a TV with a matte bezel (and screen obviously)? Preferably 32" and not too expensive. Also why are we letting people attracted to shiny objects affect the range of electronics on sale?

Daily I get requests to record from iPlayer because staff spot something too late to ask for it to be recorded. One solution we looked at was ClickView, but already having a Sky+ and ADVC-55 set, the annual cost didn't seem worth it. I then stumbled across the new YouView boxes which offered iPlayer access. The ERA's website at the time made it unclear whether this access was allowed. In fact, I was left with the impression that because defeating DRM was not allowed (i.e. ripping the video to remove the DRM), but it was allowed by other means. I even phoned the ERA to check if buying a YouView box was OK. They (helpfully) hadn't heard of the devices, but because it wasn't bypassing DRM said they thought it was OK. I should have got that in writing. Skip forward a couple of months and we buy a YouView box ... and the ERA have updated their website and now make it crystal clear that any on-demand video is off-limits. Side note: we're cancelling Sky anyway and keeping the YouView box for the free-to-air TV functionality, but it's still really frustrating. You try to do the right thing and follow the rules and just get slapped down. I left wondering what is the difference between taping off the TV and taping off iPlayer?

Hi, We are currently looking into digital signage and I am intrigued by the XIBO app so we can try and save a big heap of money. My only problem with this is that other expensive signage solutions with built in software can have automatic power on/off scheduled quite easily, but because the xibo has nothing to do with the display itself this obviously can't be done. Has anyone had any experience with displays which either have built in on/off timers? I have come across some, but they are limited in that after the automatic 'on' has happened, the display will automatically go to standby after 2 hours. Another option is to have the client pc to be scheduled to hibernate. With a standard monitor this would result in a standby, but does anyone know of any televisions which have a similar function? I've seen some Sony models with PC Power management, which will put the screen on standby after the PC signal is lost, but when the pc wakes up, does the tv turn on again?! This is obviously very specific and i'm hoping somebody has solved similar problems! Thanks!

British TV classic Knightmare has been resurrected to celebrate Geek Week! Filmed in the original Norwich studios with original cast and crew, and produced by show creator Tim Child, Treguard and Lord Fear once again fight for control of the dungeon... Ah, the memories!

Hi guys Just a quick one, if I buy a new tv, how important is it that I buy either 1080i or 1080p? Sorry been a bit lazy and not googled this for long. Thanks

I don't know if this is of interest to anyone, but I'm excited by it! George R R Martin's epic (and as yet unfinished) fantasy novel sequence "A Song of Ice and Fire" (if you're into fantasy and haven't read them, start now) has been greenlit by HBO. The pilot was filmed last year, and the suits gave the go to a 10-part series based on the first novel yesterday. The masterplan is to adapt one book/year until it gets cancelled and/or catches up with the books. The cast includes Sean Bean, Mark Addy, Lena Headey, Jennifer Ehle and too many others to type. Should be good. More details. Now all I need is for Peter Jackson to start on "Mortal Engines"...

Hi, I've looked around the internet for the answer to my question but have had no confirmation that is works. What I'm trying to do is use a DVI to VGA adapter (because I have a Radeon HD 4870 graphics card with two DVI plugins but no VGA) then use a VGA to component cable. (because my tv doesn't have a hdmi input only a component) Will this work? other people have said that it might not work because the signal is digital from the computer and it would still be digital going through the VGA cable, but no one confimed I don't think that right because isn't VGA NOT digital. Anyways, ANY help would be very much appreciated. Thanks, Kedora19
