I ought to mention that although I said that the newer 1810-48Gs are fanless, they're not. I was just speaking to our networking person who tells me it has just 1 fan but it is so inaudible, you'd be forgiven for thinking it's fanless.

We've got a large number of the 1810-48G's, many of our older ones have fans but we also have a few of a newer revision which is fanless. How it achieves that without overheating I've no idea.

I was going to speak up with a long-ish post about how our School does it differently, but @Boredguy 's School does their evacuations the same way as ours (secondary school w/ sixth form) so there's no need. We've found it allows us more time to ensure there is no one left in the buildings and while it still isn't foolproof, it works fine for us. What I've found as a fire marshal is that while Students are generally very good at evacuating promptly, it's the occasional Staff members that let the process down when they assume "oh no, not another false alarm" and don't bother to leave what they're doing.

It wasn't an email from "[email protected]" telling you that your Apple ID is temporarily locked out was it? We had one, but instantly noticed it was fake due to the fact we haven't got an Apple ID linked to the email account it specified (and that at the bottom of the email, they've spelt Europe as Eurpoe. In fact if you do get one (as a colleague just now tested the link), please block the domain as it initially takes you to a fake apple page and if you type any details in, it records them (obviously) then tries to forward you to on to child pornography sites.

How about something like these Telephone range - Interquartz (UK) Limited from Interquartz who make some of the Taxi only phones you see in supermarkets and the like.

I did this as a test on a DC7600 last year. I found the difference in performance noticeable enough to the point of usability being snappier and actually quite pleasant (even when coupled with 1 & 2GB of RAM) that I recommended we upgrade some of our more problematic rooms (i.e. the ones with these PCs in) when we get the cash to do so. Also consider that we have a few hundred of these and no plans to replace them so we have to make do and mend where possible. Of course budgets being what they are - and severely lower in schools like mine, it hasn't happened. We did manage to upgrade the RAM to 2GB in these across the site so that's helped somewhat.

I won't wholly disagree with you, but I do occasionally find reviews where the reviewer is biased towards Intel and put AMD's chips in an unfavourable light. And since the XBOX One & PS4 both use variants of AMD's APU chips, surely they can't be that bad. You may have guessed that I'm a bit of an AMD fan (not a fanboy as I still like using Intel's chips too) and that when I've purchased AMD chips before, I've never regretted any of my purchases to the point of "oh, I wish I'd bought an i5 (or i7) instead of this AMD chip". Point is, I'd happily go back and purchase another later on. I do agree that 8 cores seems a bit pointless unless you have some pressing need for them, and that most Quad core AMD or Intel chips would probably suffice.

How about something on a variation to the Fridge door alarm, a device which retro-fits to a kitchen mixer tap (or any style if possible I guess) and whistles (much like stove kettle) to let a person know the water is still running when they've walked away from a washing up bowl still filling up 2 hours later. I've found attachments which light up but are unsuitable as it needs to be audible so that forgetful people like my Dad can hear when he's left the tap on! EDIT: Funny, just noticed the post above mine!

This bit depends on what version of the Creative Suite (or individual application) someone happens to own. I had to re-install CS6 on Thursday - it doesn't matter whether you licence the product or run it as a trial, you still have to validate the installation using your Adobe ID and because of this outage, I couldn't install it.

I'm still on 1.0.18 though strangely it's now letting me connect.

It seems my FTB launcher has forced an update on me and now i'm getting "End of Stream" when I connect. Tried another PC I also have it on and it's done the same. Does the server bit need updating?

Well umm, not now there isn't. Went over to Az's base and despite 1 fps framerate (painful), I managed to eradicate most of those villagers and as a result of that, everything seems to be working ok again. Noticed while over there that someone else seems to have had a go, but must have given up due to the lag.

Seems to be down again - or at least I can't connect. Can get to DynMap though it reckons i'm still connected.

Yes, the telephone activation usually works in this situation - I tried to activate a copy of Vista recently (back when Beta testers were given a free licence, I wouldn't have paid for it otherwise) when it told me the key was already in use. Quick call to the Activation number which then allowed me to activate.

Is there an application that would provide me with a live count (or refresh after x seconds) of the number of files and sub-folders within a selected folder? I'm replicating (using DFS-R) a ton of data to a new server but I'm fed up of right-clicking and selecting 'Properties' on a folder every few seconds just to see how much data has copied compared with the source.

Teaching what exactly? Like how not to leave the placeholder index.htm file as the default homepage on an Apache web server? Honestly though, that's all I get when I click on the link you posted.

That didn't work, just comes back with "Get-VHD : The parameter is not valid. Windows cannot find a mounted virtual hard disk with the specified disk number." despite it clearly being Disk 2 and I'm 100% sure its a mounted VHD as not only does it gives the option to detach it but shows a blue disk icon instead of a grey one in Disk Management. EDIT: Another facepalm moment (maybe) - clicking "Detach VHD" not only gives me a confirmation to do it, but also tells me its filename and path. I avoided doing that in case the VHD was detrimental to another servers operation. EDIT 2:Just seen your edit. Seems like an odd place to put that to me but typical Microsoft I suppose.

Thanks. I tried this earlier, but it seems I didn't delve deep enough and it turns out to contain the remnants of a Spiceworks install we don't use anymore.

I'm currently doing some maintenance/housekeeping to our Hyper-V servers and someone (I think it may have been a previous member of staff in our department) has mounted a VHD on one of the servers. However, because Windows doesn't seem to identify the VHD that was used, I am unable to verify that the drive is still in use somewhere before I go prodding/moving/deleting anything. Does anyone know how I can find this out please?

First of all you'll need a more specialist utility to format the card such as this one from the Transcend website: Transcend AutoFormat Tool - I've used this one with cards from different manufacturers so don't think the card needs to be a transcend because as far as I've been able to tell, it doesn't need to be. Once formatted (you may have to create a new FAT32 partition in disk manager afterwards - its been a while since I did this last) you will need to download another piece of software: Win32 Disk Imager which you'll use to write the image onto the card. All going well, once the image has been written, you should be able to insert the card into the Pi and hopefully see linux booting up.

I've used both Thinstation and Windows ThinPC. IMO Thinstation is fairly easy to set up and goes "wrong" a lot less often than Windows. Windows ThinPC on the other hand fools many of our Students into thinking the PC their using is running Windows 7 and seems newer than they actually are, especially on those where i've configured a quick & seamless login from the local PC to the Terminal Server they're actually using. However, I can't recommend using this as a solution as the PCs we have running ThinPC throw up Trust Relationship errors more often than our normal W7 PCs and I've tried and failed to get rid of the issue. EDIT: Hmm, noticed you said FREE in your post, in which case i'd definitely recommend Thinstation then.

Not if they're part of the same Virtual Disk. You can have a mixture of SAS and SATAu in a server if the SAS and SATAu are in respective separate Virtual Disks though.
