Use Papercut, give them a set amount of credit each week and charge a lot more for colour than for black. They'll soon start printing in black and white.

I must be quite lucky. I've been here 3 years and only one piece of equipment (an old monitor) has been damaged by a pupil.

I'm in the fortunate position where if I need something, I get it. The headteacher always insists I spend more money than I probably would by myself, because the money is there and we want it to last a good few years. Sometimes there's a substantial sum of money that needs to disappear by the end of March, though if that happens next year I think I'll struggle to use it as there's nothing we need!

Does anyone know how ransomware affects SharePoint? I use Webdav to map network locations (not drives) to sites on our SharePoint server (on-premises) but it seems there isn't really a concensus on how a) mapped network locations and b) SharePoint reacts to ransomware (because all the content is inside a databse rather than a traditional file structure).

There'd be little benefit. From what I understand, the difference between the two is that i7 uses Hyperthreading to handle more threads at once. This is useful for things like video editing that actually support this but on a normal school laptop would never get used. i7s are often clocked a little bit faster and have a little bit more cache than i5s but they're not worth the cost increase in my opinion. Just don't get a low-end i5 and they'll be more than sufficient.

VeryPC could probably do it for around £500 including licence if you are okay with an i5 and 250GB SSD. i7 is unnecessary for anything other than video editing in my opinion. I'm a bit out of date on pricing though so I could be way out.

Out of interest, why aren't you considering ESET? I must admit I'm not overly keen on the Remote Administrator agent and the fiddly deployment but it seems to be working a lot better than Sophos did, and it uses a lot less RAM.

That's fine. It's actualy called Windows for Submarines, and I believe it's an ofshoot of Windows for Warships. It's honestly not an issue.

I've deployed a GPO that adds the SMB1 key with a value of 0 to the registry (it didn't already exist). I've also deployed the startup script. My servers have had a good few restarts but the SMB1.0/CIFS feature is still ticked. Any ideas?

Right, I've checked SCCM this morning. In my Windows 7 updates group, I have 'MS17-006 March 2017 Security Monthly Quality Rollup KB4012215' and 'MS17-008 March 2017 Security Only Quality Update KB4012212'. Are these the important patches? I keep seeing MS17-010 mentioned but I can't see it on my server at all.

When I started here I was in a similar situation. The most useful thing I did was create an asset map. I used Visio for this. Get some good quality floor plans and go round adding all the assets and relevant information such as hostname, device type, IP address (if static), room name, asset tag, even serial number if you can be bothered. It's handy as a visual resource but you can also run reports. I also found it useful to do a seperate Visio document for my network cabinets, detailing all the devices in them and the important cables. If there's nothing in place already, get Spiceworks installed. With minimal fuss it can examine the network and gather lots of useful (and useless) information about what's on it. You could also use the helpdesk part of it to log the work you do for future reference. Do you think the Nextbase kit would work with a Mobius camera? I don't see why it wouldn't, it's just the fusebox connections and a mini USB cable.

I think there's quite a lot to configure, at the very least DNS and static routes on the router (that you may or may not have control over). There's also huge security implications if you use Sharepoint for things other than a VLE. It would be very easy to open up your HR records to the world, especially on unpatched systems. Sharepoint may not make a great VLE anyway, it lacks many of the features that proper VLEs come with.

I recently purchased a site license for my school, 30 device licenses for approximately £20 each (for one year). I'm no sure what programme this was under, but how does that compare to the programmes mentioned in this thread?

How is it false? I know for a fact it does work. Just because it doesn't work all the time (I suspect when the inspectors don't use an Ofsted connection) doesn't mean it doesn't work at all.

The problem will be convincing the Head to purchase the aircon. We've had one disk failure (a month ago) and no failures of any other kind in the nearly 3 years I've worked here. There's 1 extra tower server and 2 extra devices in the comms cabinet so the room is a little hotter but it was roughly the same temperature in 2014. Historically aircon has been a bit of a taboo subject in the school!

Unfortunately the way the room is laid out the servers are currently in the best possible place. There's so little airflow that you can't feel it. I'll see about getting some AC in the room. Thanks for all the advice!

Hi all, I'm looking for your opinions on my server room temperatures. There is no air conditioning in the room. There is a vent grille on the door and an extractor fan in the ceiling. I have 3 physical tower servers, a NAS and a comms cabinet with two switches a Ruckus ZoneDirector and a PoE midspan. My cheap sensor from Aldi says 30c in the room and 33c inside the comms cabinet. My server temperatures are: Server 1 - system board 31c, CPU1 61c, CPU2 64c Server 2 - system board 29c, CPU1 50c Server 3 - system board 29c, CPU1 56c, CPU2 59c In the comms cabinet, the temperature on my Procurve 2920 is 41c, 32c on the NAS. The maximum limit for my switches is 45c. 40c for the ZoneDirector and 40c for the midspan PoE so I'd say they are very close. It's only 12c outside here at the moment, if we get a sustained period of 20c+ the school gets unbearably hot.
