That surely must mean they either didn't look at your website or they didn't use an Ofsted internet connection (they probably used their home connection).

I did a similar project not long ago. I'm by myself and did it all in a couple of weeks during the Summer holidays. Hyper-V is really easy to pick up, just do a bit of reading first. You'll soon learn the things you need to know (like don't leave time sync on for the domain controllers!) This is what I would do: Buy two good spec servers to act as hosts. 2 CPUs, plenty of ram (at least 64GB) and SSDs in RAID 10. I'd recommend Dell because their warranty and support is good (I've never had HP servers). You should probably get at least a 3 year warranty, but Dell do lifetime technical support even if your warranty has expired (you'd just have to pay for parts). Each server should have Server 2016 with a Datacenter license. The only role they should have is Hyper-V. Then install virtual servers as follows: VMHOST01 1. Domain controller + DNS 2. DHCP 3. PRINT 4. FILE VMHOST02 5. Domain controller + DNS (possible a second DHCP server if you do split scope) 6. Anti-virus 7. LASS 8. Proxy When you get everything sorted, you may want a virtual server for SCCM/WSUS/WDS/MDT/KMS etc., another for Spiceworks, another for telecom system, another for access control system etc. You want enough RAM in each Hyper-V host to be able to failover your essential servers in case one host goes down. Ideally you could failover and run all your virtual servers on one host but the RAM required might get a bit pricey. This is an ideal opportunity for your professional development. It's not very often schools have a large sum of money available for a complete overhaul. Completing a project like this will demonstrate that you are more than a toner jockey and can do system administration tasks as well as helpdesk and desktop support. Do you really need to get a company in to do this?

Would you not just charge your hourly rate? It doesn't matter if you are setting up a server or doing grunt work replacing monitors, your rate would be the same wouldn't it? I would charge at least £30/hour if I was doing work for a business (I've no idea if that is above or below the market rate, but that's what I'd want to make it worth my time). From there, it just depends on what type of server you'll be setting up, that will dictate the amount of hours but not your hourly rate. You could be working for days to get an SCCM server up and running, but a DHCP server might take an hour or two so make sure your rate is fair but also profitable for you.

I can say with 100% certainty that Ofsted inspectors do visit a school website from an Ofsted network. Maybe not in every case, but it happens a lot. I got my daily report this morning and for the first time in two years we've had hits - we had the call yesterday afternoon.

Apparently this enforces it. I applied the change it it works now!

You're spot on. I said the same thing to someone on here a few months back. If your school has no money for IT equipment but you manage to get donations from businesses or other schools, you are simply masking the problem. You will never be given the budget you need because management will see that you can manage with no money. DavetheITguy, you need to write an email to the powers that be (and bcc your private email address) explaining that you are unable to to continue to provide a decent IT service to the school. In basic terms, explain why the equipment you have is not good enough anymore (relate it back to teaching and learning), and explain how much money you need to rectify the situation. Give them 3 options: The lowest possible amount you need to replace whatever needs replacing immediately (to tide you over for one more year), a middle amount of money to replace whatever needs replacing (to allow for a decent service for 2-3 years) and a high amount of money to replace everything that needs replacing and to future proof the ICT service in your school for at least 5 years. Don't make your email too technical. Dumb it down. Take a proactive approach, rather than a threatening tone. If you still don't get any money, do everything in your power to continue to use the equipment you have in school. When it inevitably fails, and you can't replace it, refer the teaching staff to SLT. When teachers start to complain, the SLT might finally do something about the issue. Teachers can be a powerful ally. But please, for the good of your school, don't use donations. Everyone on here would love to help you out, I'm sure, but you're doing a disservice to the pupils by continuing to mask the issue. Your SLT needs to get their priorities sorted. If they can't afford to provide an effective ICT service, I'm not sure they should be running a school.

Hi all. I'm trying to produce an individual pupil progress report in SIMS that, among their names and reg/year group, displays their maths and english groups. The maths and english groups are user-defined groups. When editing the template, we use <> for their forename, <> for their year group etc. These are inserted through the Add-ins tab in Word. Is there any way to do this for english and maths groups? I don't think this is possible because all the other values are defined within SIMS but there is no way for SIMS to know what user-defined group a certain pupil is part of. It knows that they are in a group called 'Maths L' but not that they are in maths set 'L'. Does that make sense? I can't use a tag such as <> because that isn't defined in SIMS. Has anyone found a way to do this?

If it says April 2017 then I'd say that's the earliest it will get done. I know where I used to live in 2014 the date was put back 4 or 5 times (so it was done 2 years after the date they initially gave). Openreach aren't really known for being quick! To be honest, after hearing about new build estates not being connected for months after houses are occupied, I'd be very happy to have ADSL ready for moving in.

That probably means you are on ADSL rather than FTTC and you are likely a good few miles from your exchange. Assuming your exchange is enabled for fibre (most are), you will just have to wait until your green cabinets are upgraded. Use the exchange mapper at https://www.samknows.com/broadband/exchange_mapping and check the Openreach site at https://www.homeandwork.openreach.co.uk/when-can-i-get-fibre.aspx to see if they are planning to enable FTTC in your street/estate.

I purchased some from Jigsaw24 last week. I'd never used them before but because my account manager at Stormfront appeared to have left and they didn't answer the phone when I rang or reply to my email in a timely manner, I decided to give them a try. LEAs are often hesitant to dish out the relevant permissions. For example, I have pretty much free reign on my school's Rocket but other schools have to send in requests to have websites blocked/unblocked that can often take a few days.

We have on-premises SharePoint 2010 Foundation. If you've never done anything like it before it can be a bit tricky to install SharePoint and SQL server but I'm guessing it's all different in O365. SharePoint uses our AD groups so you can be as granular as you want. You can set up different 'sites' (for example, we have Home, School Information, SLT, Office, Pupil Information and Pupil Area) and restrict access to certain groups. Then within those sites you can restrict sections and even individual documents even more (so that salary information is not viewable by clerical assistants even though they can access the Office site). In general, yes, SharePoint is good for sharing resources but I wouldn't get sucked in to using it as a general file server.

We use Lightspeed Rocket for filtering and I suppose it is possible that something is being blocked in IE only but I wouldn't know what.

My suggestion will do exactly what you need. It does have other options, such as remote control, remote shutdown, messages etc. but these can be hidden.

Because the EU has different taxes for digital cameras and video recorders. By recording more than 30 minutes, it would be classed by the EU as a video recorder and therefore manufacturers would pay more import duty. Or something like that. I don't think it's just the EU, either.

LiteManager does the job for us but it's a bit buggy. It's free as well.
