Our SIMS is hosted by our LA. I can't go into specifics, but the method we had to use to remotely access SIMS is not compatible with W10. They've rolled out a new method, but it's awkward getting everybody set up on it. Put simply, I made a guide for getting set up but the staff couldn't handle it by themselves. It's easier for me to just do it with them individually, but it's tricky catching people and the last few weeks of term were manic.

Well, other duties got in the way of me getting all our SIMS users switched over to the Windows 10 compatible access method in the last few weeks of term, so that means I'm unable to re-image the last remaining 20 or so W7 devices this week. If I did, there'd be major issues on Monday! It'll just have to be a few every week now. Should be done by February half-term.

-Replace all the switches with POE versions. I'd trade in the old ones so as to not actually waste money. They are quite new HP 2530s and 2920s but not POE as there was no need at the time. There is now! -Brand new FTTP connection. Our current FTTC takes a massive detour from the cabinet. I'd get it wired into the server room instead of a random comms cabinet (the original one for the school). -Replace the Computing Room PCs. They are currently our oldest Very PC Glides, and are starting to be troublesome. -Hire a consultant to fully VLAN the network properly, because I'm out of touch with a lot of IT things these days (it's only half my job), and it needs doing! -Surface Pros (or equivalent) for all the teachers and HLTAs. -Migrate all servers to be off-site, utilising the new internet connection.

If the dongle is using DHCP, then you shouldn't need to worry about default gateway, dns etc. I think your problems lies with the ports. Make sure that ports 31314 and 993 (TCP) are open on your firewall, and make sure that agent.sl.pb.com or indeed the entire pb.com domain is unfiltered. There is a fairly basic troubleshooting website on the PB website, it describes what the light combinations on the dongle mean so you can diagnose connection issues. What lights are you getting? What is the exact model of franking machine or dongle?

Have you checked your firewall logs to see if anything to/from that IP address is being blocked?

You can simulate Group Policy by using the Group Policy Modeling and Group Policy Results tools in Group Policy Management. They can be useful for troubleshooting. You can also do gpresult /h gpreport.html in command prompt to run a report on an actual computer, to check exactly which policies are being applied or rejected. The thing you need to remember is that even if you are only configuring a user policy, and applying it to a user group, you need to be applying it to the computers those users are logging in on as well, or it won't work anymore.

The way I do it is create a GPO for your users (remember to assign it to your computers as well, or it won't run). You need change a registry key (User Configuration, Preferences, Windows Settings, Registry) to set HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced\LaunchTo to 1 instead of 2. This will make Explorer open up to 'This PC' instead of 'Quick Access'

I'm in the process of getting the SIMS users switched over to the new way of accessing SIMS (it's a bit fiddly, and if I just give them the user guide it'll make more work for me than just doing it 1 to 1 with them). Once that's done, I can upgrade the last remaining W7 computers (I left 1 per room so registers can be done) to W10. Unfortunately I'm only in 2 days at Christmas so it's very likely there'll be a few W7 computers knocking around after January.

I'm not sure how that can be justified. Kielder First School in Northumberland has 12 pupils and 5 staff (Headteacher, TA & Cook, TA, Administrator, and Site Manager.) Holy Island C of E First School, also in Northumberland, has just 1 pupil at the moment so I'm not sure how true the news article is. Holy Island does share with a mainland school so this may be why (they only attend the Island school when the tide is in).

Yes, if that is their Office 365 account. Generally your Office 365 account is tied to your local AD account, so its your ADusername@domain though it depends how you have it set up.

We have OVS-ES. I assign 'Office 365 A1 Plus for Faculty' to staff, and 'Office 365 A1 Plus' for students to pupils. That allows them to visit office.com and install Office 365 apps. There doesn't appear to be much difference between these apps and Office 2019 which we have in school.

We've got some assessment/curriculum software that is designed to only be installed on one computer for use by one user. Not very useful! It needs to be available for all of our teachers to use (I've checked, there isn't a site license. It's quite old software that is only available on a CD-ROM). I've set up a Windows Server 2019 VM and installed the software on it. The software only works on the user profile it was installed on, which I've created and called 'QWERS'. I've made the changes on this user profile that are required by the software, such as US region etc., so everybody needs to log in as this account. I've configured remote desktop to allow connections from this user account, and all staff have the RDP file on their desktop ready to go. The problem is, when one person is connected to the VM, and somebody else connects via RDP, it hijacks the session with no warning. Can anyone think of a way to stop this? I've configured via GPO (Computer Config > Admin Templates > Windows Components > Remote Desktop Services > Remote Desktop Session Host > Connections) the settings 'Limit number of connections' to 1 and 'Restrict Remote Desktop Services users to a single Remote Desktop Services session' to enable but they haven't made a difference. I have now discovered that these settings are for Remote Desktop Services, which I'm not using! What I'd like to happen is if somebody is currently logged in, and somebody else tries, it rejects the connection for them. Any ideas?

We pay £21 per device for 1 year. That is a EDU K-12 SITE DEVICE LICENSE. We have 40 in total.

A news channel primarily, but any Freeview channel really. The problem we have is our internet connection isn't the best, and having an Android box or NowTV stick or anything else will probably come through with very poor quality at times and possibly impact on other users.

I'm putting a 4 year old screen (NOT a TV, it doesn't have a tuner) in the staff room, and I thought it would be nice to have the ability to watch Freeview on it. In my mind, I thought I could get an HDMI dongle with either a built in antenna (we're in a strong signal area) or an antenna connection but I can't find one. Does such a thing exist?

Thank you for this, I hadn't come across it before. I think we're going to go for an upgrade to a modern board, CPU and RAM, and sell his CPU and RAM on eBay to get a decent chunk of the cost back. Thanks all.

The top on is 1151 unfortunately, and I'm hesitant to spend more £100 on a used motherboard. The bottom one is certainly worth considering, however it's very basic. It doesn't support front USB 3 ports, and the speed of the RAM would be reduced. It's the only board from a retailer that I've seen though, so good find.

Four years ago I built a good-spec gaming PC for a colleague. This week, their motherboard has died, and of course it's out of warranty now. It's LGA1150. As far as I can tell, these are all end of life. I can't find any for sale from a retailer. The broken board is a Maximus Ranger VII Z97, but I've been looking at all Z97, H97 and even lesser chipsets on eBay, but there's not a lot for sale. The only alternative would be to upgrade to a modern motherboard, but that means buying a new CPU and RAM when the ones he has are more than adequate. Does anyone know where I could find a reasonably priced 1150 socket motherboard, either new, refurbished or used?

Could potentially be a misconfiguration on your firewall/filter. Normally they apply rules based on AD groups.

Has anyone else come across quite severe coil whine on this model? I've had to switch to balanced instead of performance in the power management to make it go away. It's a well known problem on the HP workstations apparently.

To elaborate on this, this doesn't mean the third party cover provided by most insurance policies for over 25s! If their policy covers them for use of other vehicles, it will likely only be third party, which means if they crash it and kill someone, their insurance will cover the dead person but not the repair/replacement of your car! Don't let anyone test drive your car unless they can prove they have fully comprehensive cover on it. Cuvva is brilliant for this, one hour fully comp insurance only costs a few quid on most cars.

I have used AutoAid and Start Rescue in the past, both are absolutely fine. They send out the nearest independent firm, which in my experience has been CF Motoring Services every time. In my opinion, there's no need to pay for expensive AA or RAC cover.
