We have several laptop trolleys here with laptops and a couple with netbooks. Although the laptops gets damaged more with keys getting pulled off, even our 3 year old Dell D510s are nicer to use than our new netbooks. The netbooks have Atom processors and 5200rpm hard drives. I'm sure if we upgraded the netbooks to SSDs then they'd be faster, but personally i don't like the smaller screens.

Scan had a bundle on their today only page the other day. CPU, motherboard, memory and IDE hard drive. The motherboard only had SATA not IDE. To be fair they did change it quickly once i'd informed them.

Hard drive speed should also be considered. Replacing a slow 5200rpm hard drive with a SSD will be more noticeable in real world useage, than the swop between an Atom CPU and an AMD-E cpu.

@Valyyn, that's something you've chosen to do, and if MS ever came knocking you could prove you have a key. @Garacesh , perhaps a phone call will confirm the legitimacy of your install. Then you can copy the key and reinstall if you require.

Very strange to buy a copy if he did, but then not stick the sticker on. Doesn't matter if you're a client or not, any machine that has Windows installed on it needs a sticker.

I'm trying to think of a way the PC has a legit key without a sticker. Even a PC using a VLK has to have a Windows sticker of some sort. What happens if you reinstall Windows but find it's a dodgy copy ? I'd uninstall the stuff you don't use and forget the registry.

The key will be on the license sticker. If it's not then i doubt the install is legit. If there is a particular problem with the PC i'd try to adress that rather than a format each year out of habbit.

From memory, i think these Dell's suffer from leaking capacitors. Take the side off and have a look.

Yes, i clone all my customers SATA hard drives that way. The drive should be earthed to reduce the chance of data loss i read somewhere, although i sometimes forget to, and i haven't lost any data yet.

You might need to change the hard drive mode in the BIOS to IDE for it to be recognised.

All the Dell laptops i've ever seen have the option to ignore the wireless swith in the BIOS or UEFI. It's one of the good features of Dells.

I always thought about some sort of enclosure similar to a sand blasting cabinet. It would have a a moveable nozze for air and built in extraction.

Do not stick a hoover nozzle inside the PC. I've seen too many killed this way due to the static. Compressed air in a can is best IMO. Also make sure the fans don't spin when you're blowing. this can also cause problems.

Have you tried it without the Intel utility installed ?

Was there a utility with the wireless or just the drivers. I've found for reliability issues to just install the drivers of some cards and let Windows manage the wireless settings.

I's just like to add, cheap supermarket fuel is just that....cheap fuel. It lacks certain additives that keep the engine clean, as a result certain engines that use idle contol valves etc. get gummed up more and require cleaning more often. Ok to use ocasionally, but it will cost more in mechanics bills if you used it constantly.
