I'd try a Linux boot disk like Mint and try and access the disc that way. I have far better success with problems like this than Windows.

I wrestled with a slightly different Tosh last night a C850 but same issue wouldn't let me install 7. I don't know what options you have in the BIOS but i followed these from the Toshiba site. Go into the BIOS and then to the Security Tab, disable Secure Boot. Then go into the Advanced Tab then System Configuration, change the Boot Mode to CSM

If the hard drive is detected in the BIOS then it might be worth running some software to see if it can be recovered. Also you could try if you haven't already booting the PC from a Linux disc, I've had good success using this method, when windows wouldn't even boot with the drive as a slave. Having used Kroll Ontrack in the past, whilst excellent, i know they are not cheap.

Maybe worth seeing if you can remove the drive from the external caddy. I had WD 1TB that died, however upon investigation it was the caddy and not the drive at fault.

I built 20 computers for our music department recently. G840 processor with 4Gb memory and 250Gb hard drive, Asus Xonar sound card. The only pain was the Cubase and Sibelieus software, both have to activate over the internet which won't work from behind a proxy, so i had to take them home in batches to activate.

Here is a still from a youtube video showing a dc socket repair. It does look like the memory is soldered. Not impossible to replace with a hot air rework station.

Looking at page 22 of the service manual, there doesn't look like there are any fuses, but definitely resistors that can blow and a mosfet.

Just thought I'd add, my friend has similar problems with his S4 after updating to KitKat, it's with the repair centre at present.

Try running the hard drive diagnostic from the manufacturer.

I had a student with a broken stick last week i was unable to repair. He said he's been quoted about £80 to remove and read the flash. I'm sorry i don't know the company he was referring to though.

Although blurry, it does look like it has pulled off some of the contacts from the pcb. Depending on how valuable the data is, there are several companies that can read the flash and extract the data from it.

I've repaired a fair few USB sticks usually with a soldering iron and also have a hot air rework station. Can i help at all ? It's usually broken contacts in the USB connector or a broken crystal. Have you got any pics ?

As above, as long as they use genuine parts you do not have to take it to a main dealer to get your car serviced in warranty. And having worked in both a small independent and a main dealer. The independent garage gives a far better service. Wheels off regardless of the mileage.

All of our computers here have headphones connected. Other than that you could disconnect the speaker connector internally.

Just leave the headphones in ?

Check for bulging/leaking caps also.

Have you looked inside ? Depends on the switch, but could be bad caps.
