Running SIMS as a non-admin user - What permissions do you set and how?
BKGarry replied to David44's topic in MIS Systems
Before we migrated away from SIMS. I started using this https://github.com/rwjuk/admin-scripts/blob/master/SIMSUpdate.ps1 Copied from server to share and then run on machine startup to replace if there is an update -

Some people have never had to restore a SIMS DB after a failed patch due to a random user being left logged in somewhere, and it shows

@SIMS_Customer_Support I cannot get to any knowledgebase articles at the moment, and we only have FMS, put the newly aquired key in and it says it is invalid.

seems that I do not have any service now stuff. Called our local support unit, as cannot get into any of my older SIMS accounts, on the plus side, we are only using FMS, SIMS itself went 2 years ago

What RAID setup do you use in your school?
BKGarry replied to Sonic007's topic in Windows Server 2022
Old RAID Card failures were the worse, modern RAID cards actually keep a bit of info on a disk, so as long as the disks are in the same order and it is the same make/model card it will read the RAID config from the disks. Myself, I don't actually have RAID RAID, except for the OS Disks, which are mirrored, I have the rest of the disks on my two hosts as HBA, and have it configured as a hyper converged cluster -

I had no end of issues with SOLUS3 just not deploying to clients. It really didn't like laptops being offsite (with no VPN connection) coming in the next day, it would just not run!

BKGarry replied to SJ98's topic in Office Software
I am actually dealing with this at the moment, with a Sophos XGS, I have just ended up installing Office 2024 LTSC on the student machines with a KMS server to activate it. -
There is but I am not 100% where, and away from my PC at the moment will check when I get back to it

Something in the back of my head is tingling here. Back in the day, before we moved predominantly to Google Classroom and only had a 300mbps internet connection, I had to disable the template screen loading on opening Office programs and go straight to the new document, as opening the templates when an Office application opened was about 0.5MB download, which is fine, until you have 5 year groups worth of laptops all opening word at a similar time. Not saying it is this, but it may be worth seeing if that does anything.

The big thing I did when we were evaluating MIS was I left the actual decision to the Leadership Team. I presented the costs, with keeping FMS (thank you LEA Finance team for that) and let them make the decision on functionality, disruption etc. Your main one is it really should be the leadership and admin staff who make the decision, we can advise but ultimately the decision would be theirs.

We used to use Outlook and an Excel calendar, we have now moved all calendar events to within Arbor.
