We use AB Tutor very heavily, mainly as a support tool, the teachers of course use it for classroom management. However, we find it simply brilliant for remote support. Very powerful tool and much cheaper than some of the more well known alternatives.

Is it just me, or did anyone else actually prefer it in person? Just felt like there was too much going on, too mechanical. I prefered the chilled out nature of the team actually being there and interacting with the viewers. Hope they go back to the old "in person" events again next year!

I just use the following command in a script and deploy using SCCM or AB Tutor "FileFormatConverters.exe" /quiet "CompatibilityPackSP2.exe" /quiet I've found that you need to install the FileFormatConverters.exe before the SP2 as the SP2 package complains that there are no compatible packages installed if you haven't installed the FileFormatConverters first. However, I agree with the above post, that OpenOffice is a very good alternative. It can open and save Office 2007 formats and even has built in PDF saving capabilities! I've made it a compulsory integration into my RIS images.

SFC didn't work for the PCs because they were looking in the main for an ancient XP image on a RIS server that doesn't exist anymore and it didn't like the original XP CD.

Right, overnight, Sophos must have been updated. It finally started detecting it as "Mal/UnkPack-Fam". However, some of the PCs it has "cleaned" it has rendered totally useless. My colleague PC which was affected, can no longer run anything. Anytime you try to launch an application you either get a message saying "Application not found" or you get a option box asking what application you want to use to open the program. Is there anyway to solve this issue without rebuilding the PC? Funnily enough, I had installed NOD32 on my own PC and it removed the file with no issues at all.

The issue all started a few days ago when I noticed a PC I was using kept hiding the extensions of known files types as I was working. Hidden File Extensions is one of my pet hates, so I ensure it is disabled in all of my builds. What was annoying was this particular PC was hiding them even after I had changed the setting in Folder Options. No matter what I did it changed it back to hidden. A few days later I noticed the same issue on my desk PC and also noticed that hidden files could not be unhidden either. Now we have had an outbreak of students and staff not being able to log in because the "Personalised Settings" window when logging in gets stuck at "IE7 Uninstall Stub" - We haven't even run an uninstaller for IE7. When you fire up Task Manager, kill Explorer.exe and restart it, you get a horrible "pink bug" icon flash 2 or 3 times in the Task Manager window before it disappears and loads the desktop. Definately a virus! Sophos was being it's reliable self and not finding anything. So, on my PC, I ditched it and have just installed Kaspersky Internet Security. Straight away it popped up with a process trying to run, that had that horrible icon... SMSS.exe. I'm doing a full Kaspersky scan right now. It's giving me lots of pop ups telling me SMSS.exe is trying to edit the registry, particularly the part that shows hidden files, but Kaspersky is doing it's bit to block it. My colleagues machine that is also infected (running Sophos) isn't picking up anything. Infact, the virus is refusing to allow Sophos to even run! The Enterprise Console isn't finding anything when scanning the PC either. Has anyone encountered something like this before? How can we disinfect the PC's on our network if Sophos isn't even recognising it? I've had enough of Sophos, no wonder we get it for free! I'm surprised they can sell it at all!

Hmmm, I've obviously not looked at the home page for a while! Didn't notice the MSI. Oh well, this is probably a long shot and maybe not even necessary, but try using "Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00" as the reg file header as opposed to "REGEDIT4". I know they should both work, but I have had some really weird issues lately where it didn't like "REGEDIT4" - Long shot that it'll solve your problem, but worth a try, I guess.

Does anyone know how to do a silent install for SUPER Preferably without all the shortcuts except for the Programs Folder shortcut.

That's the funny thing. I just ran the program as myself (Domain Admin) and it doesn't even create a folder in the structure. I also ran the file as a Teacher account and they get the same error even though they have access to the C: drive and have roaming profiles.

lol, well, we don't use CC3, however, seeing as I now live in RM land, maybe I can ask "us" for help! I forgot to mention we are using Super Mandatory profiles for the kids. Maybe this could also be causing the issue. Either way, other programs don't tend to complain if they need access to D&S so why should this?

Why do you install it from an MSI? I just run a batch script to copy the files from the share to C:\Program Files\USBDLM (or wherever you choose) and then customise the settings from the ini file. Never touched the registry in relation to USBDLM.

The GPO only allows you restrict entire drives. How can you tell it to allow certain folders?

Yes, we do restrict access to the C: Drive for students. I was hoping there was a way to allow this program to run without having to unrestrict the C: Drive in GPO.

I've installed Any Video Converter so that the kids can convert some video files they need for their DIDA projects. However, when anyone tried to run the program they get the following error (See Attached) Is there anyway I can solve this?

If you're looking to just pick up some knowledge, the way I did it was just to take the plunge and try it out. I tried Microsoft's offerings: Virtual PC, Virtual Server and Hyper-V. With the exception of Hyper-V, the former 2 are very simple interfaces with very little in terms of features. They are free so give them a try. If you have a free workstation and it's relatively powerful enough, then give Hyper-V a try, much better than the other 2. Better still, if you can get your hands on a copy of Windows Server 2008, try Hyper-V on that. I did all that before actually running Smoothwall's Network Guardian in our live environment. After finding that Smoothwall didn't go too well with Hyper-V (Hello Microsoft, meet my friend, Linux... err... no) We then moved over to the free VMware Server and I saw the differences straight away. For a free product it's great and definately worth a look at to get a true feel for virtualisation. On my main desktop, I'm using VMware Workstation just for playing around. It's all bundled into a nice application as opposed to the web based interface with VMware Server and it has LOTS more features. It costs about £80 (Ramesys) and I love it! The kind of program that demonstrates why VMware is the market leader in Virtualisation. There is also VMware ESXi (Free, I think - Again, needs a free workstation) and VirtualBox by Sun, albeit I haven't tried those 2.

Has anyone got a link to the ADMs for IE8? I tried installing a set that I downloaded from somewhere, but it messed up the GPO structure, instead of all the policy settings being listed in a nice folder called IE8, it lists all the settings in the root of the GPO!

I deal with Kelway at work on almost a daily basis and I have to say I have never experienced better customer service, support or product knowledge or friendliness anywhere else! We probably buy nearly 90% of our equipment from them. Highly, highly recommended!

I've checked about:plugins on both my home PC (where the issue occurs) and on my work PC (where the problem doesn't occur) and an Adobe Flash Player entry of any sort does not appear in the list. The only Adobe related items there are Adobe Reader and Shockwave Flash.
