I've just installed VMWare Server 2 on a test machine at work running Windows Server 2008. It is stand alone workstation and not connected to any domain. When I try to access the VMWare Web Console, I get a certificate error. Is there anyway that I can fix this issue? Does it cost money to get an SSL certificate? The reason I ask is because I'd like to use VMWare at home eventually and ideally I wouldn't like to pay for a certificate for home use.

Yeah, that is a very good point. I very much doubt they have to sign any form of agreement.

We do have a Mac Server (OS X) it currently provides AD authentication and maybe even policies, not sure on the policies though. We've been using ARD to update the machines. Thanks for your help though guys.

Now this was a true gameshow! Not the arm chair rubbish we have today!

We have 2 classrooms of Apple Macs and we are now a specialist Music & Media School. We had a technician working with us last year who was a great help in setting up the Macs and integrating them with AD, installing software on them and almost everything else to do with them. For reasons totally baffling to me, (purely political) his contract was not renewed and we are now left with 2 classrooms of Macs and the NM and I are sat twidling our thumbs thinking what to do next. We're supposed to be TUPEd to RM in October, but I haven't heard anything more of that since I visited them at the start of the month... Anyway we are in the process of migrating to Smoothwall and we need to deploy the new proxy server address to all of the Macs. We also need to deploy Comic Life and Office 2008 to the Macs. We are total n00bs when it comes to Macs and anything we're trying is pretty much trial and error. Our setup is 2 classrooms of Macs, 16 in Music and 15 in Media, 2 Macbooks and a Mac Pro. These all authenticate to AD via a Mac Server. Is there also anyway of locking the stations down in a similar way to group policy? Any help is very much appreciated!

Got an external support contracter looking at the problem today, he thinks it's DNS but I will update the thread when we know more.

I use OpenDNS and DD-WRT at my parents house to filter my brothers. Works a dream, except when they press the reset button on the router, then it all goes pear shaped! But that can't be stopped...

I've been playing with it on a test PC and we're also using Hyper-V for our Smoothwall evaluation - pending confirmation and permission from RM to go for it. I must say I've not really used VMWare ESX Server, but from my first impressions of Hyper-V, Microsoft have really beefed up the competition and done something right, for once!

We are considering just simply redirecting to their home areas, we just wanted them to get in to better practice and not clutter the desktop with useless docs, videos and other crap that should be in My Documents or a Pen Drive!

I've got the Event Viewer logs from 1 of the DCs if anyone is interested in having a look, but zipped it's 11Mb so might have to be a email or FTP job!

Not tried those, but no, it doesn't affect all 3 at the same time. Yes there is and I've asked the NM, he thinks there are 2 Global Catalogues.

I forgot to mention the Exchange server is on a totally different domain from the 2 DCs. (2 DCs is Curriculum and Mail Server is Admin - Both separate Forests)

(Updated the first post!) Service Packs: SP2 on all servers, latest updates through WSUS. Anti-Virus: Sophos (LGFL Agreement) Scans every morning at 5am. I can't make sense of anything really bad in Event Viewer. Can I export the logs somehow?

We have a serious issue with 3 servers (2 DCs and 1 Exchange Server) where the server becomes totally unresponsive. Users can't log on and generally everything starts to fail. When we visit the server, the login box has disappeared and the only thing we can do is a hard reset, this issue has been going on for nearly 6 months now, it started with 1 server and has now affected 3! It happens at almost random intervals and SLT are starting to get seriously annoyed and we have no idea what the issue is. In addition to this, Ofsted is due soon, probably next month, so... I think that explains that! The 2 domain controllers are 4 year old IBM eServer MT-M 8670-L1X. Specs: Dual Intel Xeon 2.80GHz 4Gb RAM (3.81Gb Windows) Windows Server 2003 R2 x86 The Exchange Server - HP Proliant DL380 G5 (Will have to confirm this, but it's something similar!) Dual Intel Xeon E5320 1.86GHz 6Gb RAM Windows Server 2003 R2 x64 At first we thought the 2 DCs would need replacing, however, the mail server is brand new and giving the exact same issue. Does anyone have any ideas what could be the problem? We are desperate!

I've read on numerous websites, Paul Thurrott and a few others that Hyper-V will be available as a separate application that can run on Server 2003 and Windows XP. Is there any news on when this will be? Or if it is already available? I'm running it on a Server 2008 test station, but would like to try it on some other PCs.

How would I manage this? What is a rich profile? Please do send me your code, it will be interesting to know. I would have never thought of that, but it sounds like a bloody good idea! A few issue I'm worried about is that some staff may complain that they want legitamate shortcuts on the desktop. We do have an area with shortcuts to subject specific applications, they might just have to settle for that! Also, will I have to write a script that will delete the current contents of the desktop folder in their profile anyway so that it doesn't complain that it can't copy the files to the redirected location?

When we set up our vanilla Windows Server 2003 network, we initially put everyone, staff and students on mandatory profiles. (Super Mandatory for the Kids) We have since moved to Roaming Profiles for staff to get Outlook working since we installed our Exchange Server 2007. Staff have since been throwing everything and anything onto their desktops. I just copied 2Gb's worth of crap from a teachers profile into his My Documents. All of which he claims is vital, yet half of the stuff was copy of copy of copy of a document! Anyway, I have sent out a warning email saying I will be deploying a script that will automatically delete the junk in the hope some of them may start to clear things up because it is starting to severely affect our network when staff are logging on at the start of lessons and logging off at the end, 100'sGb's of data being copied to and from the server is not too pleasant and in fact the primary domain controller is starting to crash almost every week it's done it twice just this week and has to be given a hard reset. Would the easiest solution be to redirect the users Desktop to their home folder? The only problem with this is that they will still put crap on the desktop. Just it won't be copied over all the time. Or should we simply just put in a script to delete the crap off their desktop from their profile folder? After all, the mandatory profile never used to allow them to put crap on their desktop anyway.

I've created a virtual machine in Hyper-V and I'm trying to build the OS using our RIS images. However, I keep getting the error from RIS saying that my image doesn't have the correct drivers for my network adapter. I'm using the Legacy Network Adapter as you have to use this to install using a RIS image. I've found the driver I need, it's called dc21x4vm.inf/sys, I copied it from Window\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository however, it's now complaining the file is corrupt! Argh! Can someone please tell me where I can download this driver?

Tried giving full access to System32 folder, then Windows folder and then the entire C: drive. Still to no avail. I might search through Group Policy to see if it is some stupid IE setting I need to configure.

I've have tried rebuilding the machines, but that did not fix anything, probably because I have Shockwave integrated into my image. I need to create a new virgin image and give it a try. I'm not sure if it is anything to do with Shockwave, is there anything else similar that I can try that makes use of shockwave? I'm thinking more teaching materials as opposed to games.

Just a passing thought, is there an option in Group Policy that I may have configured (or not) that could be causing this issue?
