  1. Happy Birthday mate!
  2. QFT! I agree, it definately seems like someone high up in BECTA doesn't like the ribbon and is giving Office 2007 some very unwarranted bad press! This smiley seems relevant for BECTA at the moment:
  3. Interestingly I've just tried to do a repair to Adobe Shockwave from Add/Remove Programs and it simply crashes everytime it gets to the "Checking C:\Windows\System32\Adobe\Shockwave 11\SwHelper_1100465.exe" I have to use Task Manager to kill it. Still confused!
  4. Thanks for that sidewinder, that sorted it. I knew it'd be a simple untick job somewhere! Easy when you know how as they say!
  5. A bit of a cosmetic issue really. When I view users in the OU in Active Directory Users and Computers I notice they appear in the tree list with a plus symbol next to them. If it was acting correctly they really shouldn't appear in the tree list and only in the objects window. The problem is when you double click the user you don't get the properties window but a blank object window. I was just curious as to if anyone knows how to get it working correctly. http://img239.imageshack.us/img239/1492/aducfl1.th.jpg
  6. Yes, it works as Admin and Teacher/Student on selected PCs and not on others. Which is why I'm confused. I've tried the MSIs both slim and full. Still no luck.
  7. Sorry, forgot to post the links: PLATO Learning (UK) Ltd - Enhancing Teaching, Inspiring Learning solar_preload It's definately not the user profile as I get the problem with many users and tried creating a new user too.
  8. We are experiencing a problem with Adobe Shockwave. A science teacher is trying to run a couple of science related shockwave movies and gets the following error everytime: When you click OK you get another similar error and the bit I have highlighted in bold changes to "Text" and again to "Vector Shape". Then you get the following error: The weird issue is that the problem is not occuring on all the PCs. I have tried uninstalling/reinstalling Shockwave and Flash, rebuilt the PC and still no luck. It works fine as Administrator, but not as a regular user. Adobe's Shockwave page says it is sucessfully installed. I looked on a PC where the movie was working and noticed there were a lot more "Xtras" in "C:Windows\System32\Adobe\Shockwave 11\Xtras" so I copied the Xtras over to the PC with the problem. I now don't get errors but I get the Adobe Shockwave splash logo with the progress bar and the progress bar never fills. Installed Firefox and tried running from there but it complains that Shockwave is not installed even when I try to reinstall it. Any ideas? I'm totally baffled! I've given the teacher Full Controll of the Windows folder as a test, but still no luck.
  9. I'm planning on setting up a new website with some friends using Joomla and was wondering if anyone has any recommendations for a good UK based host. We will also need a domain name and preferably email forwarding. Also it would useful if the host supports Joomla so we don't have to install it onto the space ourselves. The website is purely for charitable purposes so I will be paying wholly or partially for hosting so obviously I will be looking at basic package pricing. Upto a maximum of £25/year if possible, the "clook" website Watermoss mentioned has it's basic package at £50/year. If it is the case that this is the general pricing then I may stretch to that figure, or consider hosting my own server. But in the interim I would much rather go for a hosted solution.
  10. I'll be looking forward to it! I just hope RM will let me go, seeing as "All my base is belong to RM" then! But HR assures me I will be allowed... All good!
  11. Right, I managed to boot in to Hiren's Boot CD (by removing the HDD) but no luck with any of the tools. I also checked the Acer eRecovery stuff, it won't let me change or remove the passwords unless I know the old one. Looks like it'll have to be sent to Acer.
  12. Thanks for that Synack, didn't think of that, I'll give it a try tomorrow!
  13. We have 80 of these laptops and this one looks as though it got missed out when securing them with BIOS passwords. Anyway, this PC was issued to the Head of ICT when he started a few years ago. He brought it round to us this week with the laptop asking for a password on boot up. He claims to have no knowledge of how it got their. Regardless, Acer are asking for £70 to remove it. I decided to have some fun and went on a Google search for the service manual, after about 2 hours of forum jumping, I found one, it's for the C300 but the C310 is almost identical. I took the laptop apart and put it back together, took the best part of the whole day, and I never found the CMOS battery or BIOS chip. Anyway, I put it back together and lo and behold, the boot password has disappeared. Result, dunno how though! Anyway, there is still the issue of a BIOS password. I have tried loads of backdoor passwords and cmospwd /k to no avail. Infact, cmospwd /k hung the laptop and it wouldn't boot for about 5 mins, but it came back up and still had the password. Is there anyway I can clear the password? I can't boot into any other devices because I need to enable the option in the BIOS! Anyway I may be able to change the boot priority in Windows? I've flashed the BIOS, but it hasn't removed the password.
  14. I was looking through the OAB to see if I had missed out on removing any addresses for staff who have left and I have noticed that accounts on the domain that do not have email addresses, never have and never will (mainly test accounts, but also some temp user accounts) appear in the Outlook Address Book. What's funny though, is that they do not appear in the Exchange Management Console. Is there anyway I can remove these accounts from the OAB?
  15. My nephew installed Football Manager 2008 on his Vista laptop in front of me the other day and it worked fine. We didn't run it however, until we had applied the official 8.0.2 patch. I didn't know about the Games Explorer shortcut. I just thought it didn't appear in the Start Menu because the installer was looking for "Documents and Settings" and not "Users"
  16. No Teachers/Students = No/Very Little Trouble Now if only the LEA buggered off for 6 weeks at a time! Non-Related: Hey, the big 300!
  17. Had a meeting with 2 RM TUPEd employees today. Meeting was very good. Lots of positives came out of the meeting and I have to say it has put a lot of my worries to rest. The general consensus was that the TUPE transfer and the aftermath, both short and long term were pleasant. He also told me that of the many TUPEd employees he knew, he hasn't heard of anyone who has been made redundant. RM had also told us in the meeting we had that of all employees that have been TUPEd so far, none have left. All in all I was told not to worry about job security and that from past experiences, we are safe. 1 of the employees has actually since gone on to a promoted job in RM. So, things might actually be looking up!
  18. I've got that one already. It's the one I'm replacing!
  19. I've got to buy a few appliances for my flat. I have a useless iron that doesn't get creases out and always seems to self clean on my clothes when ironing. So... I'd like to get a new iron, something not too expensive under £50. But not a self cleaning iron! Also, with winter coming and not being able to dry clothes due to the rain I need to get a dryer. I don't want to drill any holes in the wall (not my flat!) so it needs to be a condenser dryer. Again, not too expensive! So, I'd be very grateful if anyone can post some recommendations!
  20. Congratulations!
  21. Actually make that nearly £6000. It was a time when our I-Gear server was falling over big time, I spent 2 hours on the phone to Symantec operators just waiting for someone to actually recognise the fact that I-Gear is a Symantec product. Finally got a call back from someone asking how he can help with our problem with Symantec Web Security. I told him we were still using I-Gear only to be told I-Gear had been dead for 4 years, yet Pugh Computing still to this day offer licenses! Symantec Support told us to upgrade to SWS, but Symantec Licensing were saying we can't because I-Gear is still current. Yet support said all the ex I-Gear staff had left and there was only 1 guy left who had been working with SWS for nearly 2 years. Anyway, we lost patience with Symantec and needed filtering badly, just when my boss received a call from Bloxx... How convinient. We didn't have any filtering and were desperate, so he took it. It all started off hunky dory, yet the problems have been flying in and simply put, because we can't replicate them when we call support, we aren't getting anywhere. I understand that it's not entirely Bloxx's fault that we can't replicate the problems when we to call them, but well, it getting annoying when users get a pop up box asking to authenticate to the Bloxx server when it should be doing that automatically via LDAP. Also, I would like to see exactly who does the filtering updates and also how this Tru-View business really works because, kids are getting on to blocked websites willy nilly at times and with proxy avoidance being such a common tool, I have seen entirely lists of web pages in kids My Documents that are not blocked by Bloxx even when they should be. It does work well at times, but seems to let sites through too often for my liking. Anyway, met Tom Newton from Smoothwall at InfoSec in April and have been trialling Network Guardian for a while now. However, we got shafted by the "You cannot cancel unless you give us 3 months notice" clause in the Bloxx contract so we're lumbered with it for another year, add to this that our Resource Manager is not too happy we spent nearly £6k on a product that is not working too well. Why the hell you would need 3 months notice to simply cancel a contract and not do anything much else is beyond me! Anyway, I'm trying to get Network Guardian working via Virtualisation so that it can support both our domains as it only supports 1 domain at the moment. Interestingly enough Bloxx does support multiple domains. However, we've been offered the choice to run an additional NG for free if we virtualise it, so hopefully if all else works, I can get the Resource Manager to agree to let us buy it - All this before RM come marching in at the end of October!
  22. Yes, I have received confirmation from Bloxx that we own the TVT-500, we brought it outright for around £5000!
  23. We are currently running a Bloxx TVT-500 unit that we may soon have no use for if we decide to go with SmoothWall Network Guardian. Are we able to format the unit and use it for other purposes? The specs are not that great. Can I upgrade the components? Details of the spec can be found here.
  24. I'm afraid none of your PDFs work except for the Dell one. Adobe Reader 9 telling me it's corrupted.
  25. I just sent an email to our Resource Manager... If you don't ask, you wont get!
