VMWare is probably the best virtualisation platform out there, you 'can' do it all using the free VMWare ESXi, but there are some constraints using that but tbh we use it for quite a lot of our virtualisation, 20+ virtual servers on 3 boxes and it's fine for us. You don't get live migration, failover etc but it does enough to be fine for a school. If you want to go into the higher end versions of VMWare, I hope you have a nice budget for the project ;-) You can move existing physical servers to virtual using a utility provided by VMWare, works great. You will see some old posts about not doing that with DC's, but they are fine as well now. I would strongly recommend you do some homework on your current servers, find out how much memory they use, cpu load, network load etc and that should give you an idea of how many servers you need. As for hardware, speak to someone like Dell or HP and they will specify you a full solution with the servers and the storage. They will also try selling you loads of consulatncy, training, high end VMWare etc, but tell em you just want the hardware. Also, don't skimp on the budget for this, spending a decent amount on this saves in the long run and you want to spend on the back end storage as that is the bit that really affects how well the solution performs.

How about sorting out the mess of it still being in breach of copyright to rip a cd to mp3, how about allowing ebooks to be given/sold on rather than crippling them with DRM, how about selling stuff at sensible prices rather than trying to rip us off all the time?

England will improve, they often have weak opening games. To pull that one back from the brink of defeat shows a lot of bottle. Was anyone else unimpressed, to say the least, of the coverage by ITV? No atmosphere, rubbish build up, rubbish analysis and even worse commentators. As for the adverts, Vauxhall ad supporting England football during the break, WE'RE WATCHING RUGBY FFS! We often have rants about the BBC licence fees on here, but you compare the quality of the 6 Nations coverage to the ITV World Cup coverage and the BBC are in a different league. Maybe it's time we allowed the BBC to set up a subscription sports channel, tenner a month say, to allow them to compete with the commercial channels, especially Sky. I'm sure they would get a massive following for it and the big events which have to be on free to air they could simultaneously cover on subscription and fta, but give more in depth coverage on the subscription channel. But no, we can't run anything in this country how the consumer would really want it, we have to cow tow to big business.

Can you ping the routing switch using it's ip address in VLAN 1? It may be that the firewall/router/whatever you use for your internet connection needs to know your new internal lan ip ranges and needs routes set up back to your switch.

Have you set a default route as per one of my earlier posts? Also, you need to set the default gateway on your client pc's to the routing switch IP through DHCP..

There is one in the Temple Bar area and one down by the university. Go to the one in Temple Bar, go upstairs and try to snag seats by the big window area, great if you like people watching. As for the rest of the pubs in Temple Bar, good fun but expensive. Get one of the Day Rover bus tickets and it takes you on a loop round Dublin and you can hop on hop off at any of the sites. If there for 5 days, see if you can hire a car and get out into the countryside a bit, it's lovely. I also find their roadwork sign amusing, you'll see what I mean ;-)
