Good morning Our entire SNOVA folder has disappeared from //server/share/SIMS (aka S:/SIMS) last weekend but only come to light today as both staff who'd use it have been off this week. It's led me to look at permissions, currently AllStaff have Read/Write/Modify on S:/* including /SIMS/Census, CTFs, Setups etc, the whole /MSSQL folder structure, /DOCSTORAGE and /4Matrix. This is clearly overkill, but does anyone know what standard JoeBloggs needs to be able to operate SIMS? Just /DOCSTORAGE and /SIMS/Connect.ini? Or more than that? (The ESS article says Read/Write on /* but that's not much better)

That article is not referring to TOTP codes being bad; it's referring to a barrage of push notifications where the victim gets fed up and hits 'Yes'; by adding a number that times out after 30 seconds (whether by number entered into authenticator, or by TOTP) they can't accidentally allow the attacker in.

Go to Azure > MS Entra ID > Users > All Users > Per-User MFA > Service Settings - we have "Notification through mobile app" unticked; note that this is the old MFA config page which is going away in Sept 2025. The new page is Azure > MS Entra ID > Security > Authentication Methods > Policies - we only have Temporary Access Pass enabled here at the moment; MS Authenticator is disabled.

Now i'm confused. I do mean the 6-digit code which changes every 30 seconds - this is TOTP (Time-based One-Time Password), displayed in either Google Authenticator, MS Authenticator, or any other device/token that gives 6-digit codes. My original comment was to a user that has theirs set to send a push notification (to tablet/phone) saying "Is this you?" and you either click "Yes" or enter the relevant 2-digit lottery ball number from the push notification into the prompt, depending how it's been setup.

Is there a guide on what should/shouldn't be set for Googly stuff somewhere? We're a google school but not sure our balance of: intercepting google search traffic allowing docs/sheets blocking sites.google.com is setup correctly. (We've not had any downtime this morning from blocklist issues....)

Erm, TOTP is codes from authenticator?

Remember that 8-core is only 4-pairs (4 usable connections). We have two 1GB links active between all our cabs and core switch, except where our backup server etc are which had four 1GB links connected until we put in 10GB to there. Most cabs have two further spare links if one goes down for some reason.

Use a TOTP app (Google/MS) so all they need is the current code from their app, no waiting around for the push notification to arrive.

We kinda do the inverse. All mailing lists have the property "Delivery Management: Only allow members of this group to send to this mailing list: "All Staff" set. (This is on-prem Exchange but i'm sure the same setting will exist on 365)

For straightening the individual wires, I saw a video last year where someone used the outer sheath (that they'd just stripped off) as a finger protector - thread it over each wire in turn, squeeze and pull. I've been doing it ever since and my fingers are much happier for it!

Meraki sensors are (ball park) £100 for the unit, £100 for the probe and £100 for the plug, none of which come with the unit. I bought two units last month then discovered there's nothing in the box and I need to fork out another £400 to make them do anything.
