Are the computers vanilla that are just on an RM network or are they Built to the RM network? You can tell from the log on screen. Ther'll be a pink 4 in the top left corner if it's CC4. If they are RM Built check in the RM console to see if any of the users are Priviliged users on their computers. Check that the users are members of the same groups and have the same User types and policies applied. After that, check assignment overview to see that all the assigned packages are identical on these computers. If they are then that just really leaves diffences in any locally installed application. Are there any dependancies for the software and check appwiz to make sure they are all installed. Hope that helps.

All the signs are there for the end of IWBs. But we don't have a "teacher freindly" solution yet. I can see a tablet connected to a 60" TV or a generic projector doing most of what is done on a IWB. The advantages being that not only can you hand the tablet to anyone in the class but you don't have to stand in front of the thing you are trying to show. You can have all the interactive features you like without getting out of yor chair. This is important for some of my clients with special needs where you have to have height adjustable IWB to accomodate wheel chair access. Or in primary, even when the board is mounted very low the kids can't reach more than half way up and the teacher has to bend down to reach the bottom.

Is there anything blocking the updates? Check your firewall/Proxy to make sure that the update service is allowed. EDIT: We have exceptions entered for; update.microsoft.com windowsupdate.com windowsupdate.microsoft.com

OK, It appears that the computer is dropping back to a safe default setting. Something is out of spec. In device Manager are both the IWB and the monitor showing the correct model numbers? This is to check that they are using the correct drivers and not generic ones. The next thing to check is that the refresh rate is set correctly on the projector. If it's out of range for either the PC or the Projector it will default back.

Can I just check The resolution of 1140x900. Is that a typo? That's not a Widescreen resolution do you mean 1440x900? The only to get this 100% right is to use a projector and monitor with the same native resolution. Anything else is a compromise. It may work, but something is compromised along the way. I've had similar issues with an Epson 9500 long throw projector and a Sony Viao. It all came back to which one the computer recognised first set the resolution. We had to power up and plug in the projector before powering up the laptop. The latest intel Video Drivers I've installed on Toshiba Laptops lets me decide which to use, (Either Built-in + external monitor or External Monitor + Built-in). Which ever I choose as the primary sets the resolution. If you don't have these settings it's worth checking you have the latest drivers. Alternativley you could try extending the desktop as this will give you control over each display separately. I know.. it works diferently, and teachers don't handle change well, and we should have a consistent expericence across all the devices. But the ones I have shown that they can have the PowerPoint notes on one screen and the presentation on the other loved it! If you have 50 of these and they were all bought together new I can't help feeling that someone should have checked what the monitor resolution was.

I Don't mind having my details centralised so that it would benefit me in a medical emergency, while away from home say. But to sell on even de-personalised information I object to in the strongest terms. It is a trust issue. I don't trust the kinds of organisations who would buy this data. Plus once this information is out there then it will form the basis of the financial model to Privatise healthcare in the UK.

You don't need to spend any money on this. Use the Shutdown command, it works in win7 and win8. You can write a command for each computer (shutdowm /s /m \\computername) in a text file. Save it as a .bat to make a batch file. You can then schedule the batch file as a regular scheduled task. I prefer to do this from the command line too using the "at" command. It saves using admin account credentials that you can forget to update the password for. If you have a lot, copy the first part of the command in to a column in excel, copy the computer names (exported) in to the next column. Use the concatenate (&) function to make the completed commands in a third column. Cut and paste this to third column to notepad. Edit: see Shutdown Command Details and Examples for what else you can do with the shutdown command. restart, x minute delay, force user log off etc.

If you suffer from lack of williness in with present VLE don't go O365 and Sharepoint. I woud only really go down this road if I wanted to be an underpaid developer or an overpaid student. Eitherway you probably wouldn't have the time to maintain the site so it would all come to bite you in the A$$ anyway. I wouldn't go sharepoint without atleast a part time member of staff to manage it.

Guys, seriously, try centrastage. You not only connect to the remote computers but the way you can set up an estate of machines, across different network and then just write a script to run any job without needing to log on to each computer is priceless. They even common apps like plugins ready to auto deploy remotely.

What apps are you using? And what's making them install, are you using a log on script? Are they doing a full install or just setting up the user profile? If it's something like MS Office, not really but if your roaming profiles are set up right they need only go through the set up once no matter how many computers they use. Unless of course you reset their profile.

True, not all content will work on the VGA connector and other that a long VGA extension cable it may be a little short. The bug Bear I have with the VGA cable is that it's impossible to tell what will work without trying it. Some media playback apps don't allow it for the same reasons that Apple have hacked bluetooth, USB wired connections and won't give you a flash card slot. Apple say what you will do with THEIR equipement, not you. Others just haven;t thought about it. It seems that it has to be catered for programatically in the app. If you buy one Test before use every time. Even if it worked before. We found that SplashTop updated and never worked again. Granted, due to the complexity of the network, wireless on a separate vlan and all. With all that said I have mayde 12 teachers who do use it frequently as most things do indeed work ok. One thing I did see that made me chuckle, one teacher had her iPad on a visualiser attached to the projector!

I'd say 25-27K depending a few things. Quality of the benching, I design my own and get a local carpenter to fit it. I use Bull nosed work top 800mm deep with timber ends. Then I get him to cut slots for the cables and fit a catch cage or MDF box underneath to tidy the whole thing up. Where possible I like to put the Euro-Trunking under the benches, there's less tampering that way. In class rooms atleast, Staff room above for ease of access. a 48 Port switch should give enough spare sockets depending on how many Raspberry Pis you have. How far is the cable run? Do you need a Cab? It may be cheaper to wall mount a small cab in the room and take a single fibre back to main Cab than run 48 copper cables. Have you budgeted for CALs and Office Licences or do you have that covered in your OVS? Personally I would go for i3 with SSD. Probably get them for around £350-400 + £70 -100 per monitor. If you can get £32 K for the project consider Air Con. 2K should cover the IWB. You are looking at atleast 40 double sockets. You always need more that you think. Contact an electrician to make sure the power distribution board can accommodate it. Do this FIRST. Is the room big enough? I allow 800mm per workstation for computer based Learning (nothing else on the desk). You have to forget 400-500mm where you have an internal corner. You can get the computers there but not the chairs. 1200mm per workstation for computer assisted learning (where the student will have books or other materials too).

It's in the staff handbook and stated again in the AUP for the ICT facilities. Staff are not allowed to contact students directly out side of school. They are not allowed to add them as "Freinds" or "Follow" them. If they need to email them to a personal address (not their school one) then they send the email to the school office office who sends out the email to the Parents and possibly CCing the student but this is rare. This email goes out from the school generic account and not the teacher's email account. So that the replies can also be controlled. All school emails have a disclaimer stating that there is no expectation of privacy and all the mails are monitored.

My first post opened with it's not an either or... I maintain we need User skills, graphic design, office, data analysis, etc. Mr Gove was saying that we can somehow do away with that and all learn to code. No we can't, Proper IT needs to interface with the physical world. It needs real life applications and that happens where it collides with people. Users if you like. So no matter how much coding goes on you still need to teach people how to use the end result. OK You code, I do a little. How many people use your work? 1000? Coding needs to be taught, but for every coder there are a 1000 users. You can't replace good solid user training with coding, you need both. It's like teaching mechanics and hoping that somehow people will pick up on how to drive. Sure they'll know that pressing this makes you go faster and that slows you down. But that's not good driving. Glib comments about a telex machine don't really hold water when what he's proposing is a ZX81. Where you NEED to Code in order USE a computer. The vast majority of people should be isolated from coding. There are too people who are living proof that a little knowledge is dangerous. Teach it, please. It will atleast foster some understanding of the demands of programming and make all our lives a little easier. But it cannot replace user training. I have always maintained that no IT project is delivered until all the users are trained and know how to get the most out of the system. There is a parallel in education.

Coding is not main stream and it never will be. The danger is that there are only so many teaching hours in a week. What will this be at the expense of? PE? Less maths or english? Science?
