Its IE - Because you are on a domain it reverts to intranet mode and displays all sites in IE7 (really bad) To get around this, right click on the page click Inspect Element, switch to Emulation mode and change the browser to IE11 and it will display correctly OR turn off intranet compatibility mode in GP

If you are a programmer and have couple of months free, build the entire thing yourself like I did! Our Intranet is made up of a complex structure of student only and staff only content and services. One page ties them all together called Hub (1432 lines of code now), it is their homepage and centre of everything, it provides news, events, links and Google Search with prediction and history. Branching off that can be found for Staff - Mileage Calculator for submitting fuel allowances, Purchase system for ordering, Visitor system, Door Access Control, HR system, Room booking, IT Helpdesk and many more. All services sharing a common theme but the services having their own identity such as colour and options. Students don't really get a lot and its hard to work out what to give them. All built in PHP, MySQL with lots of LDAP integration. This is something that can be done *easily* if you know how. This took a lot of work but if you are committed, you can build something integral to your school.

Updating things is done via APNS (Apple Push Notification Service) - their could be issues effecting that? or maybe a new poll timeout on the devices when to push updated info?

Be wary. I write a lot of PHP code that interfaces with LDAP and its easy to get a connection without even binding, imagine someone running a script that connects to your LDAP and tries to bind 1,000,000 times?

Its fast, easy and I spend most of my time in Desktop mode and rarely use Metro apps (Only use Mail and Calendar) I suppose the point of computers in school is to teach the students how they work, how can we train the next generation if they learn in W7 and get to a job and they are using W9, I don't think it is up to us to say "nah" because we don't like it. You can set non restriction profiles to have a password but not the main Remote Management one, which is a pain! Meraki used to be able to keep track of which devices had profiles removed - might help you.

There are few active Nuclear Power Stations in Scotland (Most of them are currently being decommissioned by the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (Who is an executive department of the Dept of Energy and Climate Change)) - if Scotland goes independent they will be stuck potentially with non-working stations that require clean-up, thats already a big chunk of money allocated before they even start to plan a new welfare, education and health policies. MDMs can only operate to the limits that Apple provide them, with the MDM APIs etc. If Apple refuses to release or even develop APIs to disable people setting passcodes or restricting the Reset button then no MDM will ever be able to do this remotely. The buck stops with Apple and its damn outrageous how they push these devices to schools and expect them to just 'work'. Schools cannot afford a 1:1 deployment (Which would solve all these things as if a student sets a passcode they can remember it, its their device). I've been doing iPad stuff now for 2 years and MDM has got a lot better with iOS 6, 7 and its getting better with 8. They just need to add more functions like disabling the changing of a wallpaper, or disabling the entire settings menu.

No to both, this stuff cannot be disabled which puts a huge workload on everyone deploying them.

You can do this on the device or via Meraki: DEVICES MUST BE SUPERVISED! (It requires iOS 7 to do it via Meraki) Device Go to Settings -> Restrictions -> Enable Scroll down to the bottom where it says Account, click Do not change. This then locks the Account Page and your Apple ID cannot be removed. Meraki Open up your Device restriction settings Scroll down on the first tab (Restrictions) UNTICK the "Allow modifying account settings (iOS 7)" (For the Meraki approach, you must ensure your PROFILE has a password on it - or students could remove the profile and all these settings would magically become obsolete)
