We have done it using reshack and it looks good, would recomend against messing around with boot screen, and make sure you have the new gina in place before you switch.

not sure if it is the same up your way but for bigger downloads we have to make sure we use updateproxy.SWGFL.org.uk instead of the usual staffproxy. worth a check?

We use free open ghost but yet again it is a linux system, but all it needs is to be set up on a old bit of kit which only needs the network card and power connected, all the management can be done via the built in web server so any windows machine can use it, it also has a nice mobile access site which works nice from any pda with wireless access.

You should be able to resolve this by doing the following 1) From the server, start - Run - mmc press enter 2) File add remove snap-in 3) add Resultant Set of Policy (may be named slightly different in pre 2008) 4) OK 5) right click on Resultant Set of Policy and select generate RSOP Data Run through the wizard and it should point you in the right direction. Let me know if you need more info.

We do it in 2 locations. 1) Under user profile settings in Active Directory, we set home dir to map h: to their network share. (this sets up permissions as well) 2) Under GPO folder redirection, redirect to h:. Hope this helps.

I gave up, windows 7 works great so think i will just wait for the first release until then Ubuntu 8.10 works perfectly straight from the first install no driver issues or stability problems.

Tried using a XP SP3 disk, same issue have tried nearly every driver from the intel website for sata drivers still no luck, will not be purchasing any more sony laptop here any more. Seems my only solution is to run Ubuntu with a Virtual Xp install just to run sims. Thanks everyone for your input.

we have seen a issue here using jpgs as backgrounds, sometimes the image just would not load, fixed buy converting image to bmp.

Has any one out there managed to successfully downgrade (or should i say upgrade) a Sony Vaio VGN-NS20E/PGC-7154M from vista to xp? So far i have searched the web for a lot of hours, but am not even getting past the sata driver stage during the begining of the windows install. The BIOS is very limited and does not have any options for sata, and i have tried all the drivers i could find on the intel site. (on a plus note Ubuntu:Gutsy Gibbon installed with no problems and runs perfectly, had to tweek sound a bit but every thing else perfect.)

i agree qualifications are not every thing, i learnt far more from working for viglen for 2 years than any of my qualifications, and now have to chuck myself in the deep end with any new tech just to keep my head running right. My advise is if you need to learn linux/ad/server 2003 get a copy of the disks (betas will do) install them at home and play, try to bugger them up, then fix them, it is by far the best way to learn.

No chance. I have tried it myself and find it to just be a large box of pain in the a**e, and when running on slightly older equitpment such as AMD 2000xp with 512mg of ram it is so painfully slow it is nearly unseable. Think we will stick to xp here for as long as possible. XP is the OS MS got right it seems, it is stable easily adaptable and compatible with nearly everything.

Has anyone out there succesfully integrated a standard broadband package into there school (for backup purposes)? Or found someone else to use instead of swgfl.

proxy for updates has been around for a while but it is only for windows updates.

It is true! it is not coming back! But when asking the tech support team at SWGFL how i get my Linux server to log into the staff proxy website then enter a username and password from the terminal because it does not use any browser or front end, you can guess how useful the answer was.

we too are having this problem which now means none of my linux servers are receiving any updates.

I use the delete key, seems to work well. Any DVDrip of a standard film is illegal, being in education this is slightly overlooked still, but without having an original boxed copy of the original film stored somewhere within the school any dvdrip should be deleted as soon as it is noticed. If any member of staff/student comes to complain just tell them it is illegal and they will quickly walk away.

Still seems to have the major bug that if you run it as a standard peer to peer machine (not adding it to the domain) you can't see windows shares, so unless you know the share name you can't access them. Think i will stay with Gutsy Gibbon for a while longer.

Ok assuming you want to do this on windows from the cacls ref, you could try the following: you want to achive changing all security settins apart from any folder called staff. 1) Use window search function to find all folders called staff. 2) Select all staff folders and bring up the properties. 3) Go to the security tab, click advaced 4) untick Inherit from parent folder, click ok, close search box 5) Now any security you set higher up the tree will not filter to these sub folders. 6) On the folders at the top of the tree set the security settings you want to apply. Hope this helps.

We have 32 of the 2 gig versions, we have kept Linux on them just heavily modded the front end and created a log on script to map there home dirs and the public drive. Seem to be working well and are liked by the teachers and students.

use ntfs to disable write to most folders on the drive for that user, they will then receive a permission drive every time they try to save where they are not aloud.

we purchased 32 umpcs from stone and at least 8 were sent back for repair in the first 3 weeks.

Mythtv (or mythbuntu) free linux based media center very good, but recommends a lot of hdd space, i am currently running it on the following hard ware: AMD 3500+ CPU 1 gig ddr ram 320gig hdd onboad sound PCI free view tv card. 300w psu cheap nvidia GF 6200 gfx card (only needed if require tv out). just priced all this up in ebuyer and it came to £230 for better equipment.
