We picked up our HP Server for £107 from insight.com, and just added 2* 1tb sata drives (£80 each), then installed ubuntu (Free). Server is nothing special, AMD x2 2.2, 512 ram, 160gig sata hdd, but does the job well.

We backup all user areas every two days. Exchange every day. Shared areas twice a week. Moodle once a week. We backup to a Linux Nas containing 2 tb storage and a small thecus nas containing 600 gig for me to take home. Tapes are just to small now adays.

I would say Hard Drive is an easy place to start, just try one from a different laptop.

Kino on ubuntu is a nice small and easy to use linux video ed program, will output to nearly any format as well.

i am under the illusion that most of the network functions in home basic are disabled, but you should be able to use the network to supply an internet connection for updates.

i am confused. If all PC cases are earthed via the psu, and the rack mount cases are connected to the comms cab via metal brackets and screws, then surly all comms cabs are earthed.

Possibly network drivers, have seen on a few machine the drivers that come with windows don't fully jump into action until windows has logged on once. Try downloading drivers straight from manufacture and use them instead.

My solution is a bit long winded and took a long time to setup, but have now got wireless laptops logon down to about 1 min with 20 logging on at one time. The solution goes as follows: 1) I created a local user on each laptop called laptop, and set it to auto login at start up. 2) I then used VB to create a custom logon page that open up before explorer.exe. 3) The program prompts for a user name and password, the verifys details against active directory. Then if successful maps all drivers (home dir, public, multimedia, and student temp.) Then copies all start menu and desktop icons to a local folder. 4) then loads explorer.exe there is a few draw backs, such as user rights to some folders, and students are not able to change there passwords, and staff can not log on at all. This seems to work for us.

I manage to achive this by creating a vb script that executes the windows shutdown comand to shutdown the machines, and a free util called mc-wol to wake them up. shtudown -s -t 01 -m \\'computer name' mc-wol ma:ca:dd:re:ss

There is a microsoft tool called epal.exe which allows you to set an application to run with different user rights, i had to use it when getting the network version of dance ej to run when a student logs on, dont know if it will help in this situation.

That link does not seem to go anywhere. There was an error made when our receptionist was inputting brother and sister, she somehow messed up the upns. I am running it from the local c drive of the sims server.

Right our sims support team do not seem to want to help us with this very simple issue so i thought i may ask here. The Problem we are having is with re-allocating a upn number so it can be used for a different student. Sims have sent us two tools, the first one states that we need a database greater than 3.61.325 ours is 3.61.436. The second tool allows us to open it but when i enter my login details in claims it is an invalid user, i have tried using the account 'sa' but the error stills occures, i have even tried resetting the user 'sa' password still i get the same error message. Exact message is as follows : Unable to log in to database Please check the supplied database information, and try again. Exception message: Login failed for user 'simsint'. Any help would be appreciated.

You could just disable your dhcp server, this would stop them unless they know what range you use. You could do this by setting a net stop/ net start command in the windows tasks on the server.

a quick fix would be in an empty col enter the formula =RIGHT(A1,(LEN(A1)-1)) assuming col 'A' is the col you want to remove the first char from. fill down and you should be done.

I have just managed to get a copy of ubuntu gusty gibon installed and fully tested on the 2gig version, makes it a lot easyer to manage the os.

I originally moved from a lot of classlink 2000 networks to one single school running a cc3 network which i found to restricting for my experience, so i think after about a year of running with cc3, i had the pleasure of formatting the server and building a server 2003 domain with xp clients. To me this one of this best moves i have ever made but as stated in other posts if i did not have a good understanding of active directory and vb script i do not think i would have been able to set the whole thing up with out paying someone to come in and do it for me, which would probably cost a lot more than £90 per license.

fist i would check the ide channel on the motherboard. second does it disappear completely from the BIOS as well or just windows?
