I've seen this on various networks I support. This fix is quick to apply if you have the problem of temporary Internet files permissions described below. Sometimes copying the default profile is the necessary. I find the offending folder on the c $ share and set permissions via the network. We've found Insight pretty good for SSD pricing if you buy a quantity. One thought. From memory the Dell GX280 only has a SATA150 i/f so the benefit won't be as great with SATA2 or 3. I would try 1 SSD first to see what kind of performance boost you get. Having said that it has made our old core2 PCS still usable on CC4. For laptops one extra benefit is longer battery life which I hadn't realised.

Very happy with the Epson. We have the 470/570 and fit them ourselves. Staff like them too.

I like the look of duplicati and it looks like there's active work on the new beta. Good feature is that it encrypts backups which some other solutions don't.

+1 that. I used to work in the Olivetti central repair lab fixing all kinds of kit like PC,s, printers,word processors. There were a couple of chaps who just did monitors and there were occasional bangs followed by curses. One day there was really loud bang and a CRT capacitor had blown up and embedded itself in the ceiling tile. Put me off repairing CRT,s for some reason.....

In the GAFE administration console users there's a tick box in user settings to force users to sign back in. Not sure if you can set it for everyone but it should be possible.

Because pressing the buttons when it's sticking out of the laptop would push the whole thing down and bend the port. Some staff can be pretty heavy handed with things! Another broken laptop screen this week: sigh.

Hmm. In our school the USB stick would be wrecked by someone pressing the buttons so hard it breaks the stick, and probably USB port in the laptop too. We issue Integral encrypted USB sticks to all staff. They sign for them and we keep copies of the passwords in the safe. I have to say we've had zero problems so far.

Love my Hotters for work . Really light and comfortable and lasted 3 years so far. I like gore tex shoes as they seem to breathe a bit. My steelies get a bit sweaty by the end of the day! The best walking boots I had were Meindl. I could walk miles in them and feel fine. They lasted about 7 years.

I used to work for Olivetti firstly in the central repair lab and then tech. support. They made all kinds of kit. Always nicely designed and a cool shade of grey not nicotine stain beige. My first PC was an Olivetti Prodest PC1 8086 with twin 3.5 floppy disks.

You're lucky it's the wired version. I was asked to fit one at one of my schools which used a really dreadful quality wireless connection. More than about 3m away from the transmitter there was just a grey fuzz with interference (from the wifi possibly) as it was loosely on 2.4 GHZ. It needed power anyway so running a video cable would have been much more reliable. However the blue tits have been interested in it so hopefully it will get used!

Spiceworks has an Intel add on which can shutdown machines. Works well at 3 schools I support. It can do this by OU which I find handy.

+1 for SCOMIS. All my schools are using it generally with few problems. I sleep easier knowing that it's looked after properly. Also a council run organising so no fat cat offshore tax avoiders!

Was asked install GIMP by one of our more IT literate teachers (we are a primary). Msi installed beautifully with no fuss. Kids happy using it. All good. Photo shop GOODBYE...

I would love this to happen but staff can't/won't. When they do bring laptops to us as "dead" often it's because they haven't actually been plugged in and recharged or someone's turned off the trolley. I also want to test for myself and only replace the worst say 5 first in batches as many are still fine.

Unfortunately these are RM NB320? (Clevo) Been reasonably reliable and All fixed with warranty. I think we've had 3 mobo fails 1 dead battery and a few keys picked off (non warranty). Biggest design fail is the rubbish loose battery catch that doesn't securely keep the battery in place (black tape is our bodge fix!)
