Interesting thread. Our site manager was pretty hot on this but he actually had proper H&S training on it. Most stuff was turned off at the wall in the evening but he was happy to discuss what needed to be left with us so we were on the same page. The madness of fridges left on all summer holiday with one litre of rancid milk inside was a particular annoyance to both of us. We tended to shut down all the unneeded edge switches, NAS etc for the main summer break, but leave the main server and switches on with AP's for core access, office staff etc. He saved around 10% off the electricity bill just by doing turning things off every evening. We both had to crack down on rubbish quality £3 mains adapters that staff would bring in from home (non-PAT tested of course) to charge their phones. Even more stupid as we had a good stock of proper ones all PAT tested they could borrow!

Might be a bit new for @ICTDirect_Dave but he might have some good ideas. Also I'd check the hinges aren't seized due to application of tea and got rusty inside; cue obligatory "I've no idea how that happened" statement.

Yes. +1 that! Mrs SH uses icloud but not that much and the amount of obvious spam she gets is ncredible. I do find Google very good at catching rubbish; outlook online less so.

Hello all. Looking for professional CCTV DBS checked installer recommendations in Glasgow. It's for my mother in law who is increasingly frail and suffering memory problems. She has carers who call in daily, but it's to make sure we can see who's come to the door, check she's not wandering off etc, so would need internet access as well as it not being too accessible ("Whats' this, I'll unplug it just to make sure...") It's frustrating as I would happily install and support it (a handful of Ring doorbells/cams would probably do), but she's the other end of the country. I'm aware it's not going to be cheap, but if it means she can live at home a bit longer it's worth it. The council, Dementia helpline etc. have general info but no actual recommendations. They will have to put up with her telling them to go away but if they've worked in schools probably used to that! Thanks.

We have used these enclosed snap traps to get rid of rats round our bird feeder. Our neighbours have got them too. We just used bird food as bait as they were used to eating it. I think CPC do some extra deep bacboxes and ABS fronts (easy to drill) which might have room inside. They also do all kinds of faceplate s etc.

I once poisoned myself with dodgy milk! Half term install in one of the smallest schools in Devon where things were a bit rough and ready. The caretaker left the school open for me and I'd been told "help yourself to tea and coffee." Mid morning I did and had a good swig before I thought "hmm that tastes a bit..oh" I lost the next day of the install being sick. Lesson learnt I always took my own milk in for holiday installs as anything left in the fridge is creating germ warfare.

How very amateur.... Being of a certain age I remember all the incredible effort (and lovely overtime!) that went into fixing Y2K potential issues. Everyone vowed that they would always write code that wouldn't get broken by date changes. I wonder if the newer generations have forgotten/not been taught that hard lesson?

Recently finished All the light we cannot see by Anthony Doerr Beautifully written story about 2 children growing up in interwar France and Germany and weaving their stories together through the medium of radio. It's a long book but I was really engaged by it.

I was eligible for my booster from last Monday and managed to get an appointment for Friday. It took a bit of retrying to get an early appointment, there seems to be a lot of churn with appointments so keep trying! Found a small venue in a rugby club bar with sticky carpet and signs of post match rejoicings but all good. It was phizer, my first 2 were AZ. Felt rubbish yesterday; shivery, hot/cold, headache but hot water bottle and paracetamol really helped. Mostly ok now but glad it's done!
