I find laptops/Chromebooks with only 1 USB-C port idiotic. Any damage to the fragile connector and it's scrap. At least 2 ports are needed. It's also much easier to reflow a round pin power/3.5mm connector than a damn surface mount multi pin thing. Same applies to 3.5mm jack sockets, nice and robust and repairable (and fit headphones neatly without a fragile USB-C adapter.

I can remember my mum having some. We ended up with all kinds of weird plastic stuff that hardly ever got used as she felt obliged to buy something!

Just finished watching Paris Police 1905 on BBC4. Not for the fainthearted but with some humour too and a bit of insight into those times. The previous series Paris Police 1904 was great too! Subtitles, but I'd rather those than terrible dubbing.

In an effort try and improve our ancient oil boiler control (no room thermostat and a crude timer), I've also been playing with Drayton Wiser and Drayton Digistat (the local bluetooth version) and find it pretty good. I like that it's a UK heating company with the kit made just down the road from us, backed by Schneider so decent support. I also got a special offer TP Link KASA TRV and smartplug. I'm looking to see what else I can add on and I do confess to enjoying tinkering with it all. However, I wouldn't like to rely on all this kit as there's a lot to go wrong so the old boiler controls are still there in parallel, just in case..

I ended up with a CSE grade 1 as they didn't think I was good enough for O levels. This was back in the Stone Age so calculators weren't allowed as well as being rare and expensive anyway. However slide rules were allowed (look them up youngsters...), so I taught myself to use one and breezed through the basic maths so finished in about half the time. Result!

Our CCTV supplier commented that they found camera image quality degraded on cameras near the sea. Maybe the effect of salt/pollution degraded the lenses. Don't know about CCTV cams, but actual camera lenses have all kinds of clever coatings to improve performance so maybe that is it.
