Got to say where we're from eh? Well the school I worked at (and recieved secondary education) was in Walsall. I'm in Stafford now at uni (as some of you know). Placement year starts in June (if i can find one) so I might have moved again by July

Ah right. Well if you want to look into cisco have a look for your Regional Cisco Academy then get in touch with them to find out how much it costs. It's not cheap. Your school might be able to pay for some or maybe all of the course as part of CPD. IIRC Webman is doing his CCNA but I don't know whether he's paying for it or his work etc.

As per many other threads on this, it really depends which area of IT you're wanting to go into. I'm also 19 but I'm at uni studying Network Engineering. I'm part way through my CCNA and my CCNP at the moment. I've also done the Cisco IP Telephony and Network Security courses which are supplimentary to CCNA from what I was told by tutors. If you're after getting qualified before your performance management (I'm assuming some kind of appraisal??) then you'll be pushed to get Cisco quals if it's soon because they're quite a long winded process of learning. Unfortunately Cisco courses are the only ones I've had personal experience of so that's where my usefulness ends on this matter, other members on the forums might be able to give you some more information on courses such as MCSE and MSCA etc. With regards to the A+ and N+ courses, yes they're real. They would be useful to have on your CV, most relavent qualifications are, the Cisco qualifications are quite highly thought of in industry from what I've seen. I'm in the process of searching for an industrial placement at the moment and there are a large number of companies that are asking that you have CCNA at least for some of the network placements.

I've had two HTC (o2 XDA) phones in the past and haven't been terribly impressed. They all seemed to go the same way in the end...stopped recieving text messages and cutting off calls....which obviously was a PITA. I went over to a Nokia N70 for a while and was considering the N95. Whilst up until VERY recently (as in last week) I've not been a fan of apple products the contract with unlimited data and unlimited access to "The Cloud" wifi hotspots was just too much for my weak weak brain to resist and I got me an iPhone. I'm sorry but i've just been blown away by it. Yes...there are a number of things that have irritated me and that continue to irritate me but that are fixable and some of which are planned for future OS updates. But...just to put the icing on the cake for all you Apple flamers out there to have a little giggle at ('cause i'm nice like that ). When I got my iPhone yesterday there was only the 8Gig model. This morning....whilst i was sat replying to an e-mail a mate came up and told me that the 16Gig version had JUST been released...literally 24hrs after i bought my 8gig one.

Don't want to be the sad b***ard to put an educational slant on it, but you might want to forward that link to your science department. Internal combustion was on the syllabus when I did science in secondary school. (That is assuming you work in a secondard school) Maybe they can use it?

Within a corporate/educational environment, unless you have a need to upgrade I don't see the need to put the time, effort and money into it until it's at least SP1 as has already been mentioned. The other thing is...XP works and frankly, does so quite well...why the need to upgrade? It's a similar situation with Office 2007. "New shiney things...want them now!"

lol russdev. Can you do webcam conference calls on skype? @crc-ict....it's becaues he's kept in the EduGeek foyer for public viewing. Makes checking he's not escaped easier if everyone can do it.

Windows Media Encoder is what I'd use for a live stream and it's easy enough to embed that into a webpage from what I remember. For a periodically updated image I can suggest Fwink having used it myself a few times. http://lundie.ca/fwink/ .

If you're going to go down the vac forming route, make sure that they use suitably thick plastic to produce the forms or else they'll just crack/buckle etc with the first kid that decides to take a punch at them to see if they come off. A lot of vacuum forming that was done in my school was using 2mm sheeting (it's either ABS or some kind of acrylic i forget now) and I personally found that it cracked and snapped quite easily under pressure from just pushing it a bit with a hand.

To extend on what localzuk has said. If you're using Apache as your webserver then a nice PHP include is what I'd use. If you're using IIS and don't want to switch to Apache or install PHP for IIS then you could use the SSI method that localzuk has linked to within IIS. A bit of googling will tell you how to enable shtml and SSIs within IIS.

LOL. "Upgrades" We're on a "20meg" line. The most I get out of it (and we're talking at 0300hrs) is 4meg. I'm going to be calling them up soon because my housemate who actually is the account holder is refusing to do it but says I can if it bothers me that much. Yeah, for ASDM to login you need to setup a few things via the terminal using rollover cable. Firstly is ensuring that your inside interface is configured with an IP (obviously). Secondly you'll need to enable the http server if it's not already on (it should be setup as a https server by default iirc). Thirdly you'll need to add a user name so that you can login to ASDM. Trying to login using "enable" as the user name won't work. There /is/ a version of ASDM that runs on your computer but for that to work I think you have to have SSH setup on your Pix else it whines at you about it. I've had this happen to me in the cisco labs at uni before now but I'm not entirely sure it wasn't just the version of finesse that was on the pix I was using or whether there was something else I'd done wrong.

Presuming you are on XP etc....on the machines that you want to be able to resolve a name for the IP, edit C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts Add a line saying the IP of your host and then tab and the name you want to be resolved to the IP. There is are a couple of examples given within the hosts file. It's fairly straight forward. (Sorry just noticed that it's been mentioned above....)

An alternative to Smoothwall or IPCop would be to use pfSense. I know there's a traffic shaping module/plugin for that. I have a feeling m0n0wall does it too. pfSense and m0n0wall aren't linux based but FreeBSD based. Mostly configured by a web interface in the same manner as many FOSS solutions to routing and firewalling.

@Geoff. I'm going to be doing a placement year starting July 08 until September 09. I've already seen what a school environment has to offer working as a tech through VI Form (network admin level...not just changing toner). Is there something that a placement with your school could offer that I won't have been able to experience before in educational IT?
