How're you subnetted out of interest? Seems a little odd that MS wouldn't support subnet masks other than /24 /16 or /8 for netsend? Are you doing fun stuff with vlsm?

We used to use it to notify users when servers were going down for maintenance etc or when machines would be forced a reboot to install software at the end of the day. What they have it for at my uni is to tell users when there's going to be a tutorial in a room and give you 5 minutes notice to bugger off. It does this in the "open access" areas of the uni that are also used for teaching. It must be on some kind of a scheduled task or something. The other uses I've seen is where there's a shared partition on a suite of computers for saving simulations to etc using Matlab, Multisim, Maple and Pro Engineer drawings etc, and the computers are due to be re-imaged, to remind students to save work....also periodic reminders of assignment submission times at the faculty reception. As a user of a couple of networks that have had this style of popup, I've never had any malicious ones from the internet. The thing to do would be to enable it on your machine and leave it for a week or so and see imo.

I've got an APC rackmount jobby that's powering my servers and my core switch (cisco 2924-EN-XL ). The only thing is that if the power goes out it gracefully shuts down the windows server (because it has a serial lead connected to it) but the FreeBSD server has a nasty powercut-shutdown. I've not got round to getting the windows box to remotely shutdown the freebsd box using the apc software. It's on my list of things to do, as is gigabit tbh.

I've got a mate who had a 16 port gigabit Netgear switch on ebay last week. They took it down because he put "as new" in the listing title.

Hard to get that kind of definition that you've got on the switch on a screen-print or whatever they're going to use to put it onto t-shirts imo.

I find it amusing that there's a minimum safe working temp but not a maximum. (According to one of the faculty technicians at my university and one of my lecturers anyway).

TV Licensing is a sketchy area. It is only necessary if you are recieving broadcast materials. Doesn't matter whether it's bbc or not. If you've got a TV but aren't using it to receieve broadcast materials you don't need a license. The people came and confirmed that for me whilst cycling through the channels on my tv last year.

You could install a Windows XP Virtual Machine on one of the computers for your parents to use for the AOHell software.

Stage electrics would be who I recommend. Used them a number of times for various productions etc.

In reference to the OSI model, it's kind of a definition of a switch that it operates at layer 2. Yes you can get ones that do inter vlan routing bumping them up to layer 3 (I think that's right?) too, but seeing as switches work on MAC addressing it already is at layer two. Are you finding any issues with bandwidth etc that might warrant an upgrade? If you're not finding any problems then I personally wouldn't see the need to upgrade. Why fix something that's not broke?

Not that you'll get me to admit to it in person, but yes I do like Genesis. I'm not sure whether it's Peter Gabriel's Genesis or Phil Collins' Genesis but all the same it's all good
