Yeah as Steve said. Get in...get into privilaged mode (the "enable" command). Delete vlan.dat and erase nvram. You need to make sure you clear the config too though (the erase nvram bit) because there could be port security and things configured which, unless you want some unexpected funny behaviour, you don't want.

I'm going to go ahead and agree with webman and techguy too. I've never used it. I've had a demonstration of it at lugradio live last year and it just looked seemingly pointless to me. As a learning tool I might be able to see how it could be useful though.

I love FreeBSD but that might make you crindge a bit for your first experience. I always recommend getting a book because it /does/ help. I've got a couple of books that started me off. "Building an internet server with FreeBSD 6" and "Absolute BSD" I've now got Absolute FreeBSD Second edition (Which is the second edition to absolute BSD...not a lot's changed but it's nice to have ) I personally don't like RedHat based distros (such as Centos) but that's just my preference. Debian based is what I'd use if I were to use Linux which would mean Debian or Ubuntu.

I'd start by finding out which kids have steam accounts and get a bit of a survey on the go as to what games they've already purchased.

A less technical suggestion would be to give them to the art/DT department to make a pretty wall piece for the IT department. Wash them all off, lay them out in the layout you want them on the wall...get the DT tech to cut some MDF to size, maybe with a frame made from beading round the edge (that bit might have to be recessed around the edges using a router) and then use some no more nails to stick the motherboards on then wall mount it

I agree with regards to the MS RDP stuff. It's fine. You can access the target server with both Windows and Linux/BSD etc. MSTSC to one of your servers (ours was the ISA server I believe) then from that session MSTSC to another server within your network.

Could you not see if your DT/Art Department has a compressor you can borrow. With regards to water build up in the cylinder. I'm sure there's usually a drain valve...just drain it regularly.

My degree runs CCNA and CCNP along side it aswell as other Cisco modules such as IP Telephony and Fundamentals of Network Security. I get to do WLAN too at some point.

As an end user of a Bluesocket system I find that it's horrible. If your wifi drops it sends you back to the captive portal and then insists that you're already logged in so won't let you log into the system and won't let you do anything either. This COULD just be the way that they've got it setup at my university but I personally just don't like it. The interface is slow on mobile devices such as my iPhone too!

I got offered a post at an IT consultancy recently at the same time I was offered a place in a school. The school network is much more impressive, the pay's better, it's far more interesting work and I enjoy the environment. That's why I'm going back to work in a school

Between the ages of 11 and 15 I helped out with setting up PA equipment for mass and the lighting at school productions and with staffs that couldn't work projectors and things in lessons. At the age of 16 I was asked to help out with wiring up all the speaker systems in the new eLearning centre and was then asked to help out with ICT Services department. That department saw a regeim change where I was the only person left in there helping out in my own time and spare periods etc. So both myself and the Head of ICT took on network administration. Network maintenance was outsourced to a company who were in one day a week and a new technician was employed. I retained network administration activities through VI Form and now two years later I'm going back for my industrial placement year from Uni as "ICT Network Technician." If I /hadn't/ had the oppertunities I've had to get into networks and the experience I gained, then I wouldn't be doing a Network Engineering degree and going into IT and the Education sector. I think that more students should be encouraged into this kind of role because it helps with giving them some kind of direction for what they want to do with their life as opposed to leaving school and ending up not knowing what they want to do and stacking shelves in sainsburys for the rest of their life (and yes...I do know someone has to do it...i just think it's a shame when people do it because they didn't have the oppertunity to do anything else). @ JackD......paid..... well you're a lucky kid! I didn't get paid. My contribution was purely voluntary, but as cliche as it sounds, the experience I recieved was payment enough!

The last job you described is about right. I take on the roles of a standard technician but become the one responsible for network config, troubleshooting and monitoring. I also take on the Linux stuff and a few other things.

Yeah downgrade back to the original OS and you can recycle is what I've been told by a few people. Licensing isn't one of my strong points though. I spent about 20 minutes getting John to explain it to me over MSN the other night because I was having some issues with something.

Well the place I'll be going back to for my placement year has the techie in charge of ICT Services department and he's called "Lead Technician." My job title will be "ICT Network Technician" seeing as in my job description it basically comes out that I'll be primarily responsible for network hardware and infrastructure at a switching and routing level. Remote access and things like that come under my umbrella of responsibility as does network monitoring.
