A cupboard with air con...not a big deal. I personally am not a big fan of water cooling. I know it uses de-ionised water so is non conductive but it just seems inherent with hassle when air con could fix this issue just as well.

Other open source options to consider are pfSense and m0n0wall. Both based on the BSD kernel as opposed to the Linux kernel. As the others have already mentioned Smoothwall is a good contender. Another Linux based offering would be IPCop. But yes an ASA or a PIX will do the job, and having used both I personally prefer working on ASAs but it's just preference. You might wish to consider whether a Cisco device is necessary when it might well be full of features you're not going to use, when a custom built box would do the job for a lot lower cost.

I'm quite excited about the SDK. It'll be interesting to see how the remote wipe works on the server side. I'll not be trying that on mine without a backup first though @ dagza you'll be able to get your e-mail over EDGE. There could well be a filter somewhere in between your iPhone and the interweb that's preventing IMAP. My University doesn't allow IMAP out to the internet. (Or IMAP for connecting to exchange as it happens). Copy and paste is still not a present feature....we live in hope.

The way I've done it when going on holiday with people that drive before was to either use the airport's long stay parking or to get a hire car in advance, drive to the airport, return the car to the rental peoples and just stay in a hotel. Obviously that second way is more expensive and you've then got to hire again when you get back so you can get home.

Fewer overheads on the server means that you can devote more of the hardware to actually running the services and not running a GUI that most of the time no one will be using. That's the main one anyway.

Well there's been a lot of good points mentioned already. There are issues regarding PAT testing (but if the laptop isn't been plugged into the mains then there's the way around that). Antivirus issues. There's no way for you to ensure that "foreign equipment" (as in not your school's kit) is up to date on the current definitions. Security policies. Kids'll install all sorts of crap and play around when they're meant to be doing work etc. I'd like to implement a secure method of access for students and staff for their own machines to gain network access. This would probably centre around a VMPS, a captive portal, a liability waver (Ts&Cs), some cisco APs etc etc. For access to network shares the remote access system for home access would probably be used.

Yeah there are already a number of ways to do this. I've used nagios in the past as it'll check individual services on the server too and then e-mail you if something dies. Good stuff. I've used poweradmin in the past too but that's for windows boxen.

Where I was at I implemented Liberum to replace OTRS. It worked well but when I left we were still having issues trying to get staff to use it. It was being used primarily as a logging system for the IT staff and ticket management within the IT Services department. Two years since I left now so I don't know what it's like any more.

Nessus is a good security/vulnerability scanner. It's recommended by Cisco on their Fundamentals of Network Security module.

It's a PTC product. I could well be wrong on the licensing front but I remember that as students we got free copies of it when I was in school. It's not open source.

3D modelling isn't the easiest thing in the world to grasp at primary level I wouldn't have thought, but Pro Desktop is quite good and I believe, free to schools.

Well I'm backing up to format and install x64 later today. I was using a temp installation of x32 for a while to see if i wanted to use vista. I've just decided to go with it. Fingers crossed the SP1 won't bone my PC

I've been told that one of the patches applied through windows update pre-SP causes an infinate loop in booting to occur when you install the SP on some machines so it just constantly reboots. The only way to fix it is to format. Apparently it has been pulled from windows update for a couple of days until a fix can be incorporated.
