The King's Daughter (Rakuten as I had a free rental, but widely available to rent) King Louis XIV (Pierce Brosnan) is feeling his mortality and commissions an expedition to capture a mermaid that he can sacrifice in order to achieve immortality. However he hasn't counted on the bond his daughter will form with the creature. This one was filmed in 2014 and then pulled to finish FX work and then enmeshed in legal complications, eventually surfacing last year. It's a French/Chinese/Australian production with a mainly British/American cast apart from Fan Bingbing as the mermaid - surprised by the lack of French people - with the cast putting on English accents. Looks sumptuous though, while the men's costumes seem fairly "period" (not sure Louis would have been showing quite so much chest), the women's often look like they got a deal when "The Great Gatsby" finished filming (IANA historical costume expert). Unfortunately, it all feels a bit like a better than average kid's film and I suspect it would play better to the sort of young 'uns who don't need "kidz" in their films. As it stands, the most interesting thing about it is that the novel it's based on beat out "Game of Thrones" for the 1997 Nebula. From the synopsis, the novel seems to cover the same sort of beats, but is definitely not for young 'uns.

Cautiously optimistic, but not normally impressed by "adult" animation. I'm also worried that JMS seems a prime candidate for revelations about domineering workplace behaviour that might harm the future of B5. cf Joss Whedon.

Tried again, having given up on the middle one. I'm flattered.

"Fans of Ghosted will love these Apple Originals". I'm struggling to see what a dumb-but-fun action flick has in common with any of those apart from being on Apple TV+.

Carnival Row Season 2 on Amazon Prime.I don't know if it was because I knew it was cancelled, but I wasn't as enamoured of it as I was with the first season. The good news: There is a conclusion, though it's one of those that leaves things open enough for more if someone decided they have bigger pockets than Jeff Bezos. Talking of him, did he mandate the "Communism is Bad" plot that is hammered through most of the season? Ironically, when one of the characters extols the Capitalist system, it's one who revealed that their wealth came from doing bad things and, despite their "wealth being shared out doesn't work if it's not earned" line, they spend a lot of time with someone whose wealth is inherited, The bad: Lots of characters make decisions that seem purely there to further the plot, and plot points are ended way too quickly or suddenly surface with no reason apart to get to "the end". The above makes it sound as if I hated the season; I didn't, there was still lots to enjoy but it felt like it could have been so much better had it had more time. Apparently they'd filmed 8 eps and then were given 2 more to wrap up, but that still doesn't explain the rushed feeling of earlier eps. Citadel on also Amazon Prime. First 2 eps were OK but, apart from higher production values and the swearing, it could have been made in the 80s. Lord knows where the $300 million went, as some of the FX looked quite shonky. Still, at least it's given Dot from Miss Fisher some employment and the first ep did use "Driver's Seat" by Sniff and the Tears to close. I did wander why they were touring - I guess they're hoping it might spark some interest. (OT: Though the single did OKish worldwide and has had a couple of resurgences after being used in an advert and again when it was featured in "Boogie Nights", it never did that well here in their homeland. They managed to get a lot of airplay leading up to release, but pressing plant problems meant the disk didn't come out in time to benefit). Slightly more on topic: Why do streaming channels make it so hard to watch the credits? If you don't grab the remote and find the right key quickly enough, you're stuck with fast-forwarding through the whole show and hoping you don't go too far. Amazon Prime picture settings. After setting up my TV so Carnival Row was looking great, Citadel looked awful but I C(ouldn't)BA to make the requisite changes. I've not noticed this on other streamers.

Polite Society (Cinema) Ria dreams of becoming a stuntwoman, and her sister Lena (Ritu Arya from The Umbrella Academy) is her greatest supporter. When Lena falls for handsome surgeon Salim, Ria realises there's only one thing she can do... break them up. But Salim may well be to good to be true... Fun comedy/action movie that is worth catching on home release, though probably not a cinema trip. Nimra Bucha, who plays the evil mother of the would-be groom, seems to have found her niche as she played much the same role in Ms. Marvel.

Ghosted (Apple TV+) When Cole meets the beautiful Sadie, he can't believe his luck... and then finds himself ghosted. So he decides to follow her to London and finds himself dragged into her real life. You've seen this plot before, but this time it's the guy who is one who is the innocent. After a rocky start that seems to be more of an Apple commercial (to be fair one of the products is part of the plot) it develops into more of a Netflix action flick; I'm guessing that Apple are finding that "critically acclaimed" doesn't necessarily equate to "new subscribers". A fun romp that's worth a look if you're a subscriber or you get a free trial to binge a load of things (like Foundation) but not worth stumping up for a sub just to watch. There are some great uncredited cameos (Chris Evans is listed as a producer so I guess he called up some mates) and I can see why the second bounty hunter was there (they are even styled like another relevant character they played) but I can't help but feel, given who they were sandwiched between, they should have had one of two ladies there instead. P.S. I bet Dexter Fletcher never imagined he'd be involved in stuff like this back in the "Press Gang" days - let alone directing them.

Ouch! Hope you get it sorted. The only problem we've had with Evri (touches wood) has been their overoptimistic delivery times. Otherwise David (our local guy) seems OK.

Does Task Manager show any resource hogs? Anything weird in the properties of shortcuts? Do they point to the "proper" location? I recently set up a lovely redirected desktop for pupils and noticed that the "My Documents" link went to My Documents. Luckily it just threw a permissions error! Also, are they copied to the local disk or in a network location? Can't imagine that where the shortcut is would cause that error, but might be worth ruling it out.

IIRC they started to charge for Java at one stage. (I think you may have even been supposed to remove existing installations). A little while back they realised no-one was using it and relaxed the rules - to very specific versions, I seem to recall. I saw the first ep and, while I have always had something better to watch since, I didn't think "no more of that". Mind you, I'm not a fan of the JC version.

Until I heard it spoken out loud, I always assumed it was Gal Gado(t) with a silent "t". Even now that I know the "t" isn't silent, I still find myself reverting to my initial mispronunciation. As the chances of me ever meeting her are next to zero, it shouldn't be a problem. The chances of me ever meeting Gal Gadot are next to zero.

Hurry up! Recently finished The 4400. Mme LeMarchand gave up on this towards the end of Season 2, but I discovered at Xmas that it's a great show to watch "in the background" as you don't need to concentrate too hard and it's not so good that you want to watch every second. Anyway, it does actually get an "ending", though it's fairly open-ended and you never really get a decent explanation of what the two factions really had planned. Also Season 1 of My Life Is Murder. It's an Australian/NZ co-production with S1 set in Melbourne, which they make look very pretty, and S2 in Auckland. Lucy Lawless plays an acerbic widowed ex-cop who takes on cold cases for the police. One of Mme LeMarchand's picks, this is watchable but not a classic.
