Yes to Hotspot and she just went to her sister (who is on EE) and things were fine there. We're also on VM and when she was here she did have slowdowns, but we're on some ridiculously high speed and so it was a bit better. Mme LeMarchand is also on wfh but via Citrix(?) and rarely has problems.

Bonus Daughter #2 mainly works from home for a large finance firm, who mandate Cisco AnyConnect. Unfortunately this doesn't play ball with VM. Although it should be their IT getting this sorted, this has been going on for months so I thought I'd see if anyone here had any idea fixes. It seems as if during the working day, things are incredibly slow (4Mbps slow), but it's fine in the evenings. This would suggest something the firm's end if it weren't for the fact that it only seems to affect VM users. BD2 spoke to a VM engineer in the UK(!) who said they use Cisco themselves without problems, which would seem to rule out traffic shaping (though the engineers may get business lines?). I've tried the various internet fixes apart from modem mode/a different router as the (Cisco/Linksys!) router I had to test wouldn't seem to allow connection to the internet when the VM Hub was in modem mode. (Didn't have enough time to fully investigate). Any ideas, peeps?

Mad Heidi (Rental most places) TRAILER NSFW In a totalitarian Switzerland, Heidi must fight back against the evil ruler. Title is a bit misleading as it's more the film that is mad than Heidi. This was a crowdfunded effort and whilst it's obviously not high budget it doesn't look any worse than your average low budget flick. Gratuitous t&a seems out of place in a modern production, but I guess it fits in with the grindhouse aesthetic, and whilst the film isn't good it does have some clever lines and the cinematography is better than some bigger budget movies. Really only good for a beery night in with the lads, though.

I'm suspecting the problem is the non-BT end (or that BT is being fussy) as using the MXTool shows all sorts of possible problems. That said, with the possible exception of the DMARC, surely GoDaddy should have all this stuff sorted by default?

Thanks; have bookmarked that tool. My friend just has a bog standard "personal" BT account, but his client seems to be using Go Daddy and it doesn't look like DMARC is set up, but would this affect incoming mail? Possibly as a result of this they are on a couple of blacklists. Would this mean that BT don't want to "speak" to them?

I've been using the free version for months now for unattended access to 3 hosts (you can have up to 5) - though none are Ubuntu. It does like to nag, but as long as they don't pull an "Avast" and remove the free tier (in Avast's case, for EDU), I can live with that. Yes, Avast, I'm still miffed about that about-face! As long as the free tier does what you need, you should be golden.

Just that one client. The client says that other people who contact them via BT have the same problem.

Was helping someone out last night, and they cannot send any mail to a client via their "main" email account with BT as the mail is eventually returned as "unable to reach host". Sending exactly the same mail via Gmail is fine. I looked at the host, which appears to just be a place holder. I'm suspecting that they haven't got DKIM etc set up properly, but then why is only BT affected? The recipient reports that it seems to be only BT that they don't get email from.

Any cheap/quick fixes you could DIY? Thicker curtains, especially over doors, secondary double glazing, even draught excluding tape and the like?

Different people report different results with that technique, but it does seem to work out OK for us overnight. (It's on during the day as Mme LeMarchand is on wfh).

Knock at the Cabin (Premium Rental - most services) Four strangers turn up at an isolated cabin and tell the three inhabitants that they must choose one of their own to be sacrificed to prevent the apocalypse. Pretty tense, but the ending could have done with being more ambiguous,

Noelle (Disney+) Noelle's Dad is Kris Kringle (aka Santa Claus) and she has been brought up to be the "spreader of joy" for her family whilst her brother Nick is being trained to take over when Dad passes on. When the day comes, Nick is left unable to cope. On Noelle's urging, he heads out into the world for a break... and decides to stay there. Who is going to save Christmas? I think you already know. So-so comedy that not even the normally reliable Anna Kendrick can save. Redeemed slightly by a surprising (for a mainstream US film) sub-plot involving a mother an daughter in a homeless shelter but otherwise not really worth your time. That said, Mme LeMarchand is a big Xmas movie fan and loved it - especially the baby reindeer.

Just had a letter from Scottish Power to let me know that my energy prices are decreasing! OK, £5 quid a month isn't much - but hey, better than nothing. Except that's not the monthly decrease, it's the annual one.

Thanks folks. Hot and cold go in much like they do to separate taps and the electricity just pumps it out. I must have been able to turn off the water to swap out the solenoid so it seems a feasible job. Might get a quote as if it's not ridiculously expensive it might be better to get someone in - if someone can be found!

Our shower has, I think, passed on. Had it around 10 years(?), and replaced the solenoid valve 3 years or so back. Earlier this week it briefly cut out whilst I was showering, then needed a bit of encouragement to start the next morning and since - won't turn on. Took the cover off last night and it looks like the motor has burnt out, though some sources suggest that the thermostatic valve may have gone. Both are £100+ while a new shower is around £200 so I'm thinking we'd be better off betting a whole new shower. In my little brain a like-for-like swap shouldn't be too difficult but Mme LeMarchand is worried about electricity + water (she seems to have forgotten I replaced the valve). What do the collective think? Do it, or get a professional in?
