Our's is playing up still!

Hi, I need a piece of software for a pupil with physical disabilities. He is in a wheelchair and only has the use of one arm. I need a piece of software which enables him to draw maths shapes, use protractors and rulers etc. Basically to use tools which an able bodied child can use, i.e compasses, protractors etc to make shapes. Is there anything out there which we can load on to his laptop? Many thanks

I am trying to find who owns a domain name, but they have their details hidden from WHOIS. Is there a way of finding out who owns a domain name when they have opted out of displaying their details publicly?

The cheapest quotes all come from SCC, but I think they may have the wrong items - I'm still looking into it at the moment.

Unfortunately, many of our teachers NEED (oh yes they do) access to comment banks within SIMS in order to write their reports!!!! Writing them in word first would mean them having to 'think'!!!!

Hi Ric, How much more would the 'Enterprise' version cost over the 'Advanced'? We are initially staring with 30 internal clients, hopefully leading to 150+ by next year. I want to use Citrix for staff and pupils to remotely login. Now I set the figure at 30 initially, but this may rise, but obviously not in the hundreds. I doubt we would ever have more than 5-60 concurrent 'external' users on at any one time. What would you say was the maximum Xenapp Enterprise (including Secure gateway) external connections can cope with? I have just had a look at Citrix's website and there is a product called 'Xenapp Fundamental's' which allows 75 remote users, do you have any experience of this? Many thanks

All our teachers have to do their school reports electronically within SIMS now. Is there a way (without remote logon) to write all their reports and them import them into SIMS (when they get back into the school). I don't know if there's an add-on etc to write the reports in and then synchronise, I'm just thinking out aloud!

What kind of prices should I be expecting for the following: Citrix Xenapp 'advanced' license Citrix Access gateway 'standard' Windows terminal server CAL 2008 As I have varied prices, such as: Xenapp £118-£140 Access gateway £37-£45 Terminal Server CAL £2.75-£16 Any help would be hugely appreciated in these budget strapped times!

I have a C3000 chassis with 8 blades. This will be used for Citrix. Do I need to team the 2 network cards in each blade (like our main servers) or does Citrix not mind if they are just 1GB X 2 connections from each blade.

I live in the Lake District, and I thought that was the most beautiful part of the Country! That was until I went to the Highlands, (Inverness, Fort Augustus and Fort William) - absolutely stunning! I am about to install Windows Server on my new 8 blades, and don't know whether to install 32 or 64 bit version. The blades will be used for a Citrix farm and will be used to deliver the usual classroom curriculum plus SIMS (possibly, will have to see how the project goes). My domain is a Windows 2003 (32bit) with a Windows 2008 (32 bit) print server. I know you can have print driver issues, etc with 64bit, and sims is only 32 bit, but is anyone using it totally 64 bit. I don't mind about old software as I'm using this project as an opportunity to get rid of legacy software. If anyone is using 64bit 2008 with SIMS, I would love to hear from them. If not, do you have mixed 32/64 bit 2008 Citrix servers in your farm to accommodate SIMS??? Many thanks

Looks good, but just beware! If a link opens a new window (as in Examinations link) ideally, good practice and compliant with (I can't remember which standard now) you need to inform the user the link opens a new window! Just my two-penneth!

Hi I have a HP blade (C3000) and a load of BL460C blades. What I want to do is team both network cards in each blade. Please could someone let me know which is the easiest and most robust route to take

We use Serif applications and others to help with our multimedia, video editing and animation within ICT. Do people use any open source alternatives to perform these functions. Because we pay all this money for licenses, etc, but only about 5% of the application is used. I'm sure we could utilise some OS software to get the same result.

Is this just connect through to the Internet, or are they connected to the domain with shares etc? I have recently gone and bought a very expensive Zyxel solution, and it's CRAP! I wish I had this though. Just out of curiosity, what would be the initial (ball park) figure of a setup? Many thanks

Just thought I'd throw this out to everyone. As a user of a RBC services, ie, AV,email,content filtering etc. Are you wary that they are becoming too entrenched in the day to day activities of a school. What I mean by this is, say BSF comes to your area and your particular RBC is so deeply routed to your's and other schools that it could simply be a case of 'here you go', you take it on, seeing as they supply and support X amount of all the schools services. Am I just paranoid, or is this a reality? I ask this because our RBC has MORE things to offer us in the way of INTEGRATING our VLE, MIS etc etc included in our maintenance contract, therefore making us somewhat dependant on their services!

I recently hired a Technician who had NO experience whatsoever. We had ex uni, almost finished uni, experienced guys currently doing the job, all who applied and many interviewed. But in the end, I plumped for a middle-aged lady who had GREAT interpersonal skills, which I would say is hugely underrated and VITAL in a school! You can teach someone the skills needed. But you can't give them a personality!!

Just had a meeting with SLT where it was deemed that teachers would find MOODLE too cumbersome to use, Moodle is supplied by our RBC. So it's up to me to come up with an alternative that would be intuitive and 'easy' enough for the kids, ahem!!! teachers to use on a daily basis. I need something that the staff would feel comfortable with, because if we stay with MOODLE I know that it will be down to us all in IT to administer it on a day to day basis, and that quite frankly defeats the object of a VLE in my book. I also need something that would sit nicely with SIMS for parental access. Many thanks

Can I use the fact that the school has a VPN into the school and use all the resources for our pupils as a substitute for a VLE. It would make my life a little easier if this could be used instead of a dedicated VLE. What options do other people have? Also, I have just had a meeting with our SLT and informed them that we may need a dedicated person to do what the teachers should be doing with regards to the VLE. And an option was to ditch Moodle and go with an off-the-shelf product so it's easy for teachers to use - is there such a thing, if so, what is it? Many thanks

Just thought I'd share my first experience of dealing with CPL. Simon from CPL saw a post I made here on Edugeek regarding some bits I needed. He duly beat the quotes I had - some by a Country mile I might add! The items arrived today, and I am pleased with the service I received. CPL's style of account management certainly appeals to me. It's not just down to price, I appreciate suppliers want to make a sale, but to be badgered every week gets a bit tiresome. So it's refreshing to deal with a company who patiently waits for you to contact them! My experiences so far of CPL is a very good one. They are there if and when we need them!
