We have always had problems with the Stone machines. When we first got them, we had a hell of a job installing Sophos on them (maybe not such a bad thing). They have generally been problematic. The problems we are experiencing are only on the stones. We have re-imaged and rebuilt the image, no luck! They just don't like something on our network. With regards to updates etc, some will accept all updates, other only some - very strange. Policies have always had a problem on these. In the dark at the moment!

We have a number of stone computers which have been a bit problematic from day one. They don't like to apply GPO's properly. And today, if you open up Internet Explorer, a second window appears and takes focus and you can't get rid of it. So basically, explorer just hangs there It's ONLY happening on the Stone computers in various departments, not any of the Dell or HP ones. Can anyone shed some light. Many thanks

We recently had an Engineer tweaking our management system. He mentioned something about WUP (I think that's what he called it) was not running on the server. It was to provide windows updates to all the computers on the network. Now all the network is going crazy, updating not only critical updates but SP3 as well. Please could someone let me know what he has done and how do I tweak it so it only sends out updates for 'critical' updates for the PC's. I don't know if it's through GPO's, Windows services, ?????? Give that man a cigar! I have just returned here after deleting the administrator profile (well as much as I could, as good old MS make you keep bits and bobs). I just refreshed the Tree and hey presto - seems to be working now!

When the administrator account logs on to one of our servers to look at GPO's etc the account receives a catastrophic failure message. But when I log on to the server with another account, everything is fine. It only does this on this server. We have 2 servers (i.e 1 & 2) Server 1 is fine, it's just when you log onto server 2. Anyone have any ideas?

I have just bought a blade server and for one reason and another there were not enough power supplies and fans in it, so hence the reason for those 2 items. As with many/most schools in the Country, I cannot place an order until April as our budget has been suspended till then. What is the easiest way of assigning printers to PC's. I guess it will be through policies, but I don't know how. We are moving away from our middle-ware and eventually want a vanilla network. Also, I need to group stations to assign shortcuts. I don't want shortcuts on stations that do not have the application loaded on. I basically need help on locking down/configuring the stations as I want to remove our management software. Many thanks

Sorry, got completely wrong info regarding the spec of the servers, they are: BL460c, 1 x Xeon 5420 (2500/1333-2x6MB) Quad Core, 4GB (2x2GB), Hot Plug SFF SAS Diskless, Smart Array Controller E200i/128MB BBWC. Hard drives: HP Single Port hard drive - 72 GB - SAS (only 10,000 RPM) I will have between 4 and 8 of these blades (eventually), - will they be OK. Also, the speed of the hard drives is only 10,000RPM, how much of a difference will this make?

We are going to trial 20. But we envisage moving 3 of our ICT suites over to it. I've taken advantage of the HP deal at the moment. I will be having 8 BL460C blades. 2GB RAM, Quad core Zeon. Not hugely beefy, but we intend using only one server for every 20 machines. With plenty of servers left for future projects. 8 Blades and and a blade enclosure cost us £7,500, an absolute bargain. About £6,500 off! With the money saved, this will pay for all the Xenapp and MS licenses and remote access

When I worked for Local Government. Northgate supplied our Contact System. They were good to deal with. The only problem was when we had to upgrade the software. We had to start in the early afternoon, and believe it or not, we would still be at it the following morning. It took us 14 hours on a couple of occasions to upgrade the servers. Their software was appalling, it made MS look incredible. It was so bitty, it was hard to keep up with it. It also had a few bugs in it that they could not rectify. But apart from the software, they were good to deal with!!!

Hi Does anyone use any environment monitoring hardware in their server room which emails/texts them etc. when variables going squiffy! The main thing I'm interested in monitoring is the heat in the room. Many thanks

We will be trialling Citrix after Easter. Anyone know of any issues relating to curriculum software running on Citrix that we need to be aware of. Any printers not liking Citrix, etc. Any information would be hugely appreciated
