Just started at a new company and their acceptable use policy 'acceptance' screen appears after you press ctrl+alt+del and once you agree you are confronted by the username and password prompt. Now my issue is this. Someone can log on to the network WITHOUT prior agreement to the policy as someone could have booted up the PC accepted the policy and then decided not to log on. The next user comes along and does not have top agree to the policy. My arguement is that the acceptance of the policy sghould come in once the user has logged on. Failure would log them off. The current setup ASSUMES the logged on user has accepted the policy. What do people think?

But REALLY what is the issue? I know people will come out with the old 'confidence' thing but come on! It works both ways, if a child was in a lower ability set they may have the opinion of 'hey, I'm going to get myself out of this'! I was in the 'remidial' class at school and probably the 'thickie' sets but does it really matter, no! This report therefore indicates that 6 out of 7 are NOT streamlined/SET! In this day and age we need to establish the can and cant's to be able to do something REAL about it. Not integrate them all and make do!

In a nutshell, streamlining Information systems. Creating a digital information architecture, basically a new digital library. New ways of working with data, should be really interesting. Doesn't sound good, but the project should be IMMENSE! As with all systems, data is key and this project is to catalogue/control the flow of data from every micro piece of information so it's readily available. I bet you are non the wiser, neither am I, ha ha

That's exactly what I have been talking about. It's silly to have a group of schools in close proximity all doing 80%+ the same thing when it could be centralised with fewer overheads. Why have 12 individual data centres when 1 will do?

I'd use it to pay for my superinjunctions that would be racking up as I selfishly spent my millions on 'ladies of the night'! ha ha

I used to work for a local authority and the sharing of ICT worked amazingly well. 4 District and Borough Council's ICT departments merged to form one ICT unit. There was one Director, one ICT Network Manager, one Project manager etc etc. All the councils had different flavours, i.e vanilla, novell, Linux etc. But with correct planning and implementation, training, budgetary control, it worked fantastically. One centralised call centre was implemented. The knowledge sharing was fantastic. They realised that there was so much duplication with all the councils (both resources and personell) it was a no brainer. Each council adopted the best practice from the other councils, some systems were lost in favour of better ones, but all in all, it was great. No autonomy or control was really lost. No one council took precedence, all the councils, no matter how big or small they were, were treat as an equal, with an equal voice. On this basis, I don't see how this could not work in schools. I know everyone (including me) is protective of their network and resources, but the reality is, I think the current environment will change. How I don't know, but I bet it's not far off my example.

If it was all virtualised and each school had their own are which didn't impede any other school, what would be the difference. If you wanted a development area, your technicians could do it on one of their development servers. If problems happen, the school in question would still be in the same boat as they currently would be, having to resolve the issue. If one school had a greater budget than another, great. Do with it what they wanted, more vdi, software, hardware, doesn't matter. The basics will be in place. This idea is more about sharing human resources than a technological viewpoint.

There's no reason why schools couldn't be individual even with a VDI setup. It's just the infrastructure that would be the same. Each school could have their own look and feel, directory structure, mapping, policies etc. Sharing the infrastructures and associated costs. But the technicians within the school can 'tweak' their own to their own tastes. The bigger picture would be a 'sharing' of the Network Manager/Director, resources etc. The development planning and programme delivery could be performed by a 'floating' body which is shared amongst the schools

That's because there are HUGE similarities with the provision of ICT. Under BSF programme, each school would have been blessed with a NEW, sparkling ICT provision. Not necessarily better, but new nevertheless. And under the remaining years, there would not be the level of funding in the pot to sustain the incredibly large initial procurement of ICT, both in infrastructure and front end equipment. Needless to say, the remaining years would see this pot of money reduce, year on year. This I guess will (or is) happening to existing Academies. HUGE initial investment, followed by years of under funding to support the ridiculous, unsustainable initial purchases

That's exactly what I'm talking about. If these 15 schools had ONE Director and ONE Network manager between them (for example). And all the schools had their dedicated Technicians to manage their network, etc, economies could be met. Whether this would be centrally hosted is another issue. But the people needed for these 15 schools could be cut possibly as the knowledge needed in each school is replicated 15 times in a short geographical area. Which in reality could be managed more effectively

I was possibly thinking along the lines of one Network Manager/Director to help the schools (reduce the overlap) with all their development plans, project planning, etc etc. And each school has their technicians to support and run the networks. I would hazard a guess that most schools run 80%+ Windows and office (which accounts for most of their needs). As long as each school has decent support with Technicians (senior and low level) reductions could be made. There could be a floating ICT co-ordinator to a group of schools say???

What is everybody's thought's on the future on ICT within schools over the next 5-10 years. Now that BSF is dead and the amalgamation of schools ICT function is no longer being amalgamated, what do people think. Personally I still think this will happen as budgets are reduced and rationalisation creeps in. Local councils are streamlining their ICT provision, so I guess it could only be time before schools realise the benefits, albeit financial ones. It's feasible as schools primarily do the same thing across the board with incredibly similar software, etc. What's peoples opinion on this?

I'm going through this right now! My notice period is 3 months. I handed in my notice over two weeks ago and in the resignation stated that I would like to go after 2 months if amicably agreed. I have still yet to receive an formal acceptance of the resignation and they will not discuss the 'leaving early'. They say they want to receive a letter from my new employer seeking their preferred start date so they can talk it over with the governors - FFS!!!!! I had received the formal offer in the first week of the Easter holidays, and so sat on it for two weeks as the head and line manager would not read them until the first day back, so I lost 2 weeks there. My new employer was hassling me for a start date and were unhappy at the school dragging their heels. My new employer gave me an ultimatum on Tuesday to provide them with a date, so I did (without speaking to my line managers) as I was getting nowhere. I gave them till the end of June, which is 9 weeks working notice not including the missed 2 weeks of Easter, totalling 11 weeks. I have since emailed my manager and head stating this and again, have not responded to my correspondence!!! So all I will do is just leave on the said date (early) and they can stick it!!!!!!!!! I have followed procedure, they have not!!!!! I have consulted a solicitor and they said all they can do is file for costs incurred whilst getting a replacement to cover the period you failed to work and not give you a reference, that's it! So my advice to anyone, give them 'some' reasonable notice and go for it. They can't expect you to work for 3 months as your head and heart will not be in it. It all boils down to their attitudes unfortunately and if they are GOOD managers with people skills. Sadly, mine have neither!

All the documents on our moodle (mp3's, doc's etc etc) all currently download to the users area when they open them. Is there a way to stop this and just 'open' on thye site instead of thousands of doc's being downloaded all the time and then clearing out temp/download folders. Many thanks
