We had an issue once with Kyocera's where it was down to locally installed fonts! We installed a new font pack and everything worked fine. Just my two-penneth!

Thank you for your answers. In an ideal world, the policies and procedures will/would work - but not here unfortunately. The kids mainly bring their pen drives in to play games or listen to music - with the odd virus. Our VLE can store all their data and we have Citrix Access Gateway also. With reference to the 'no internet', the children that have no computer and internet - we have provided that for them. We don't use photoshop or anything else. The only files they would use are office (about 99%). I appreciate the issues this can cause but the distractions and the issues this causes is huge. There are alternatives to not bringing pen drives in, it's a cultural issue - like everything is - people don't like change! And I can vouch for most of the IT guys on here that they are just a bloody pain!

Anyone have or know where I can get a good report on the dangers of external storage/usb memory keys etc. I am trying to stop our school from using keys and before I broach the subject with SLT I need some backup info. Any information will be appreciated Cheers

Anyone use any external supplier to house all of your data (or back it up) etc.

We use Pcounter for managing our printers. It works ok but we now need more. What we want is a management software that can establish how much coverage on a page and debit accordingly. At the moment if someone prints out one line of colour they are deducted the same as if someone had printed out an edge to edge full colour powerpoint. Is there any software out there that does this. whenever I go to SLT I just get 'do what you have to'! So I just do! But when I do, arrrggghhhh the teacher's moan like buggery - I can't win. This job would be good without printers and teachers!

I use pcounter and the kids have 20 pages per week irrespective of colour/b&w. We have all sorts of issues when I implement quota's and mono, etc!!!!!!!! And yes, the cost of the toners is coming out of my pot. I think every class uses powerpoint instead of word now - it's effin ridiculous!!!!!

Printing, I installed a full set of new toner cartridges in three printers last week and now two of them need 2 replalcing. Looked through our logs and it's because the little have been printing powerpoints, full colour edge to edge all day, every day!!! Is there an easy way of disabling the background colour theme in powerpoint when they print. I have questioned why they need to print powerpoints in the first place and teachers being teachers come up with a excuse, I have unticked 'print in background' in the customisation tab, but nothing! Any suggestions - even will help!!!!

Just be wary of the policies!!!! We created a policy to shut down the pc's at pre-determined times. But I mistakingly scheduled it for there and then and it shut the server down (luckily it only had impero on it). Every time I booted up the server - it shut down. There was absolutely no way into the server except safe mode and then manually deleting the entry from the xml file. It's a bloody nightmare. Granted I should never have 'mistakingly' ticked the enable schedule now in the frirst place

We are a school of around 670 pupils and have 5 ICT suites and 130 laptops. A computer in every room for a teacher AND a teacher laptop (which stays at home). Now I think this is way over the top. I've been talking to a Manager from a very good school and they only have 2 ICT suites and a30 laptops and all the teachers use their laptop in their classrooms and they have 1200 kids. What I'm after is what you guys have at your school. I'm trying to scale down the number of suites as by clever timetabling we could remove one if not two ICT suites and reduce the number of laptops too. Our school thinks more is better!!!!!

I really don't know why people have been beating me up over this. Does anyone mention the science demonstrations where teachers set light to their hands filled with soapy gas bubbles. Surely poor little Johny will grow up to be a fire breathing pyromaniac after watching that demonstration! I can't believe how vilified I am after having confidence in what I do. Not one member of SLT had any doubts to the demonstration. For all the people who said that I was encouraging children to 'hack', what about all the science experiements, surely these would be more exciting to the kids to copy?????

The initial intention was purely an exercise for the parents. We had year 11 pupils in with them explaining they've tried for the last 3 years, etc etc! It's not a case of being 'bigheaded' or 'maverick', purely and simple an exercise in showing the lengths we go to to safeguard the children in our care. Yes, of course I was expecting thisngs to go wrong, but it's how you deal with problems that you are REALLY measured on. How you cope under pressure, what measures are in place, etc. And yes, I was flying by the seat of my pants, but from what I've heard from both staff and parents, they respected our team for it. Basically, we were not promoting bad behaviour. We were simply showing how hard it was. Of course I'm not niave enough to think it won't happen. But the parents know that we are doing everything we possibly can (within budget) to promote safe working practices and that their little darlings are severly restricted on the internet

Maybe I like the drama and risk????? The demonstration ended up right throughout the school on ANY computer and judging by the feedback forms, parents were more than happy with the demonstration. If things had gone wrong, then you hold your hand up, admit somethings gone wrong and you fix it - simple. I was prepared for the RBC filter to fail, our filters to fail, potential ports to open, etc. If you are not prepared, then that's when you are in trouble!!!!! It's very easy to become stale in the school environment and when an opportunity arises to put you well and truly on your toes - GRAB IT!!!!! -

Many thanks to all the detractor's who doubted my proposed evening. We had the open evening last night and asked the kids etc to to avoid the filters and what a resounding success!!!!! The evening provided what we wanted - reassured parents of our tight security and stringent safeguarding procedures!!!!!!!! If you don't try, if you don't put your neck on the line, if you don't trust what you do - what's the point?????

I appreciate your answer. But the level headed parents know that there's no such thing as 100% fullproof (even Durex won't do that). But they have to realsie that if and only if they find a 'my little pony site' for example. What systems we have in place to block it and impose sanctions. This surely must be a little bit of comfort to parents - surely!!!!

The bigger question is : - Why their little angel is looking for porn in the first place? As my 10 year old certainly wouldn't!!!! He'd be far more interested in trying to get to miniclip!!!!

I'd like to see you try and put porn on!!!!!!!!! I think you have already won the prize!!! Where does it say I know everything. I want children to gain access to games websites etc so I can show the parents what happens next, etc etc! Jeeess, what is it with everyone, taking this waaaaaaay too seriously!!! Lighten up, it's to enlighten their parents on online safety within the school. Not to promote young deviants and miscreants. These are young 9 and 10 year old's who may or may not be up for a little challenge - what's the harm - christ!!!!!!!!!!
