Having stopped all the auditing from active directory, I think I may have solved it. When I stopped them on AD the local policies kicked in and I forgot about these. I have stopped these logging for the time being and it seems to have sorted it. I will probably enable them one by one to get a good balance of logging audits. What do other people use, i.e. which policies are set. Jesus - I just realised the time. 22:45 - I've been logged in from home for 4 hours! what a sad git!

I have now switched off all policy settings for auditing and I still get all the messages every 3 or 4 minutes - help!

Out of the 9 possible policy settings - which ones do you or others have set?

Is this local security policy within active directory?

I have just found out that it happens on all other machines too!

My security log is going into overdrive - please see attached screen shot. Anyone got any ideas. I think this is causing my machine to periodically lose network connections also

Anyone got rid of office and gone open source to save a few quid on licensing. If so, has this had an affect on SIMS reporting etc or any other application, exam board.

Anyone know of any survey/questionnaire software out there. We have used surveymonkey (web based) but the trial only allows you to use 10 questions and the reporting is not easy to extract. I am after a piece of software to create reports and then analyse the data. Any help?

Yeh! The commissioner told me that schools are in a grey area and the image can only be used for a particular reason. Now as they have left, that reason no longer exists but the factual content does and the kids are incidental. Basically, to save a whole lot of trouble, just get rid of any image of any past pupil. Although not technically breaking any act in having them there, the fact that its a grey area can just stir up trouble! was the answer more or less I was given today

Not a school, but my last place of work - Local Government. My colleague and I were updating the contact centre which was taking us from 4PM right through to 8AM. We were the only two people in the building at around 1:30am when we decided to go to the ground floor for a coffee at the vending machine. The machine was right next door to the lift. As we were waiting for our coffees, the lift began to descend from the top floor (we did not press the button as it needs a card inserted) and just waited, thinking it just had a bit of a fit. But then the lift stopped at our floor and then the doors opened with no-one there - obviously. We looked at each other and our minds really started to go into overdrive, but left it at that. As I went to go back to get my coffee, it had fallen over in the dispenser - coincidence - maybe. But we never went anywhere in that building all night without each other - like a couple of girls we were (sorry girls). When we told the site manager about this a few days later, he told us when the building was being built, the lift fell on a workman crushing him. He didn't die in the building, but in hospital days later - wwwooo!

Parents signed a release form. But the data commissioner told me that can only stand for as long as they are at the school. Once left, images cannot be used. So anyone who has them on their website has to take them off also, even if you have a legitimate reason for taking the image in the first place. Basically, the DPA does not cover minors, but once they have left they become ADULTS (yeh right) but the school would still be processing data relating to an adult, therefore infringing the fair usage criteria.

Just phoned the Information commissioner, they said NO, I can't do it! so that's it then!!! the lazy teachers will just have to go out and take some more, without kids in!

One of our teachers want's to use old pictures of past pupils for course work. I did not realise we had any. Under DPA, are we able to use these pictures for current pupils to use. The pictures in question are kids who have been snapped with litter found on beaches, or do we have to dispose of them?

Hi I have to replace a whole classroom and the start of next financial year another (both with 20-30 PC's). Now I think this would be a good time to possibly go down the thin client route. Could someone let me know everything I would need, ie. servers, spec (I guess one decent one for 20 clients??, licenses (Citrix) or others. I need all the basics as I need to present it to SLT. I have used Citrix with my old employer but do not know what's needed in the way of server(s) licenses, costs etc. Any help would be hugely appreciated. Also, we run CSE workspace explorer.net but I have been told this will not run on Citrix so these would need to be configured differently.

Anyone give me a ballpark figure of parentpay costs, i.e, initial start-up, hosting, maintenance, transaction costs, etc. many thanks

I went through this with my last employer - local government. I won't tell you who it was but the way they implemented it is now used as a best example of 'WORST' practice. My position was a Systems Integration Officer, there were two of us in the department. We had separate interviews, he ended up on £1,000 more than me. I appealed and by this time they (the management) we more adept at the answers you could give and I went down again. I appealed for the last time only to find out I just scraped into the pay scale lower than my colleague after re-banding had taken place. I found out I was paid £2,500 less than my colleague who did the exact same job. 80% of the council went up, 10% stayed the same and 10% went down. I found that administrative temps were on the same salary, because they dealt with the public - it was a total sham! The CEO was fired and the Finance Director was applauded, work that one out. All in all, the Unions are a complete joke. We were one of the first authorities in the Country to run job evaluation and we used a computerised q and a's. They just would not listed, it cost the Council £1.5M extra in wages. This was for a very small local authority. So basically, anyone who says, they can't do that to me is deluded. The only option you have is if your school is a Trust school, then and only then, if you have the backing of your SLT would they pay you what you are worth!

Hi We allow pupils 20 pages per week and staff 50. With the exception of ICT staff who have 100 pages.

Hi Richie Our access points are basically dumb terminals. Our main wireless switches can only be on one channel at any one time. The access points plug into the main wireless switch and take all the settings from their (minimal configuration). The only issue we have is that we have two wireless switches, so in theory we can have a maximum of two channels even though we can connect 16 access points (8 on each). It is a corporate blanket coverage.

Our setup is a blanket coverage so all the access points can be on the same channel. We use ZYxel 81600 switches with NWA-8500 access points. So we have free roaming without loss around the school (in theory). Just wondering if anyone else had this setup

Do they have to be teachers???? If not, it's money for asking the Network Manager or Technician what to do and asking for their development plan and not passing the salary on.

AAAAHHHHHH! What are they like. I have just started disabling pupils accounts for using the email as a chat forum in class. And as soon as we find a little darling looking for games, off the internet they go for 2 weeks. If they do it again, off for 6 weeks. Do you think this is fair?

Just wondering what sanctions people have in place for when the little darlings misuse the computers and disobey the AUP.

Anyone heard of this. I have just received a flyer and logged on to website (username: teacher, password: letmein) there are other logins alos, i.e. pupil, parent, etc. I have had a quick look and I must say it looks really good. It also ties directly into SIMS and extracts everyting you would need, ie, pupil, class, report, registration, the lot. What I want to know is if you haven't heard of it before, please have a look and tell me what you think. If you have heard of it, please let me know your experiences. Schools are eligible. I have been speaking to Misco and they tell me they are limiting it to 10 units per establishment - including schools!
