Sorry for posting another SIMS question. Why do some workstations not update when we apply our server upgrades. I have been told it might me to do with permissions on the local directory, is this correct? Many thanks

Just installing Sims (Simsinst.exe) and usually just install the default. Today I clicked on settings and found that the: Install SIMS Document Server application in the directory was pointing to (C:\Program Files\SIMS\SIMS .net Document Server) and Store documents in the directory was pointing to (c:\DocStorage) Is this correct? Also, the pathe for the database name is pointing to the old databse (before we moved to sql2005). Does the connect.ini on the s drive override this path? Many thanks

Hi I have been working in the Education sector for a year now and I am still amazed that SIMS does not have a test environment. I used to work for local government and all the systems I looked after had at least 2 if not 3 instances of a system, i.e. LIVE, TEST, DEVELOPMENT. If I want to have a test environment is it ok for me to copy the database and setup a test environment. Or do Capita have a module for doing this. Also, if I do will the powers that be render my contract as invalid. Many thanks

Just loaded sims.net (May release) on a machine and when I try and run Nova_t I get the following: SNOVA directory not found. NOVA-T6 needs to know the directory in order to run it. As usual, you cannot get into anything to alter it. Anyone got any ideas? Many thanks

Hi Our School does not have a VLE (doesnt have a website come to that - but thats another matter). I have been trying to get this through to the School that we HAVE to have it. Now who's responsibility is it. Is it primarily the SLT or the department heads? I have to present my case this week and was just after a few pointers. We are so far behind, we need this quickly and therfore need to hit them hard with what the schools repsonsibilities are. So I would appreciate any help on who I need to direct this at. Many thanks

Hi I have a Zyxel wireless network and have a mixture of Toshiba A100's and loads of A210's. The A100's work pretty well on the network but the A210's dont. The A210's have a realtek network card and the A100's have an Atheros. Are Realtek network cards crap! I have a trolley (one of many) whioch has half A100/A210's to test the network. All A100's are on, all A210's are off. Both configured exactly the same, can't figure it out. I know it's not the network as all 100 Asus eepc's work fine. Some of the laptops read full signal strength, others read 20% even though they are next to an access point!!!!! My head is looking for blood as we had an LEA inspection this week and they were not impressed with the fact that NO teacher was prepared to use the wirless network, etc. And therefore he wants blood, whether its mine of Toshiba. Does anyone have any information on this. I have been in touch with Misco and Toshiba who are both scratching their heads. Please help.

Hi I know this is a simple one but I thought I'd ask. When you select a pupil within SIMS and want to generate a letter, word fires up but the pupils details are not sent across to populate the template. I have done thise before but I can't remember what I did. Many thanks

Believe it or not, about 8 years ago. I rolled out a thin client to a lady at the council where I worked. I had a call about an hour later to tell me she needed a bigger desk as she had run out of room. It turned out that she did not realsie she could pick up the mouse and replace it to enable her to click the cross in the corner to close the application down - that I would say was the best one I have had!

ah well, I guess I'll just have to have ALL next week off (term time)....................on the other hand, my wife has me decorating the whole house as we are going to sell it, sh**!

I have just finished working in Kendal (after 8 years) all I had to look at was a wall, glad to be out of Kendal. I dont know what you think but having been there for the last 8 years - its going down hill, nearly as chavvy as Barrow!

I feel rather bad for bringing this topic up. I have a view of fields then the Irish sea (we are an Island off the South Coast of Cumbria)

I have one (about a week). Its pretty good but the wireless is not as good as the eeepc 900 (9" version). That we can take anywhere in the school and its great, the HP I find is a little limited when it comes to wireless. The screen is very very very shiny, very hard to see with a little sunlight! But I would still go with the HP as it looks and feels good.

Just wondering what outlook people had from their server room window (providing they have one).

Just wondering what the ratio of computers/laptops and students/teachers there were to ICT supoport staff (including Network Manager). We have a 300+ PC/laptop network with 700 (increasing to 900 due to BSF programme) pupils and 120 staff. To support this there is myself (NM) and one ICT Technician. Another Support assistant to start when their CRB is through (but only to assist in SIMS, web updates and helpdesk queries) so not a techie! I have been asked if I would need another technician when we grow to 900, should I take them up on their offer or would this just be too greedy as I dont know if I can justify a full-time post! I doubt whether I would get a part-time post either. Just wondering what others had, I know of a school nearby who has nearly 900 pupils and 5 staff!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Before you purchase, look at Impero. I doubt anything could beat this, and their support is second to none!

Hi, is there a product/hardware which can scan my network (currently a zyxel 8160 switch with 8500 ap's) to show me the broadcasts of the ap's I have in my school. I vaguely remember (maybe Aruba/Netgear) which provides a visual map (providing you input a map of the school) of all your ap's and shows their output and bleed into each ap. I would appreciate any help anyone can give me. I don't mind if it's expensive. Thanks

Hi We have a VLE setup by our RBC but as yet no-one has done anything with it. Who's responsibility is it to make sure its up and running, maintained, etc. Is it the head of ICT, me as the Network manager, who? I would apreciate any help on this

Is there a way in policies to redirect google to that of our schools intranet homepage search engine (as this generates revenue for us). What I want is when a pupil types in google it redirects to our search page (simple). Is it easy to do? Thanks

Hi It is only happening on some machines, and yes, they are all imaged.
