VPN is the answer here. And the end user will need to do a little work to connect - usually hit the connect button, and then enter their username password. Then they can access the resource such as the server, printers, etc

We lock them completely down. Can't change wallpaper, themes, mouse icons, taskbar location/size, or really anything. For staff and students. They all have the same look, the most a person can do is enlarge the forced desktop icons.

That isn't really security though. A smart student will just static on in... You need a firewall or switch and a vlan.

Create a share, delegate read only permissions for everyone but you, then group policy folder redirection... Redirect desktop to that share..

How are the drives mapped? If through GPO, maybe ILT or a WMI filter

Shares are easy. Just need a file manager app that support UNC paths. Solid explorer on android, es file explorer, root explorer, etc. I also used one on iPad before that was free. Printing - android has native printing support in 4.4+ for cloud print and HP. Projectors - mirecast or Chromecast would do the trick (Chromecast will gain full mirroring shortly) What else? A bunch of Nexus 7's will work for this so far.

When you figure this out let me know. We would like to do exactly this. The only way I know to do this is if they are a domain guest.

I want to say I have seen this before, but can't really remember. Try to run ie in no add ons mode and see if the issue persists.

Can you login to that PC and do a ipconfig /all. Post results here if possible. Also a nslookup to the IP of the DC, and one to the IP of the gateway. Finally, a ping of each as well.

IF the end user ever logged on to pc1 and then changed his password on pc2 and then this pc1 was offline, windows would be using the cached old password and give this error.

Possibly squid with opendns?

The real question is why you are doing XP reinstalls!!!

Do they have read access? They don't need write access. How are the folders redirected? Is it running in the correct security context? It really seems like the folder doesn't exist that you want to redirect to and it can't make the folder due to permissions. Wireless or wired clients.

Does your gateway have any sort of acl or firewall? Deny all except from the proxy server.

Basic troubleshooting applies here. Can they access the folders manually at this time? Can they ping the server? Results of gpresult and nslookup? Event log?

Of course there is a 2 line powershell you can run that will export dhcp with everything (scope, leases, etc) from the old server and another 2 line to import into the new server. Then you just have to stop the service on the old server.
