We've just moved over from FMS to Sage 50 and although I can't comment on how it well it works etc, the Finance Director likes it as do the finance department (after a bit of weening off FMS ) It was a doddle to install and set up and is apparently a proper Finance Package!

One of our techs wrote a program that pulls in the last 10 open calls on our helpdesk, displays the number of telephone calls into the office so far that day and the number of unanswered ones. It also has BBC News via iPlayer and a scrolling text message bar for important information that the team need to be aware of.

I wouldn't worry too much about the police - they might pop round and ask you to make sure that if you do have a camera, it doesn't look into their house but otherwise it's far more likely to be a civil matter. It does seem to be a bit of a grey area when it comes to to recording of images but I don't think you have anything to worry about if you are in a public space

Are the problem computers getting any IP at all. Although it's seems unlikely given what you have said, I wonder if there is another devices acting as a DHCP server on your network?

I have had this problem a couple of times in the last few years and most recently about 6 months ago. First thing is obviously to find the culprit as trying to remove yourself from blacklists before then is completely pointless. So I would 1. Force a password change as you suggested 2. If the spam is still happening, check the message queues in Exchange Server as it will show you if there is a lot of mail going to what appears to be random recipients. Exchange also has message tracking so you can see who has sent what and when. 3. If you have a firewall make sure that only your exchange server can send out on port 25 and if it isn't then check the logs for any activity on that port If you visit spamhaus.org they maintain blocking lists and if you enter your external IP can tell you if your are blacklisted and the reason why. Don't remove yourself from their lists until you are sure you are free of the problem. Good luck - its a nightmare when it happens and can be a huge pain to sort out. We are going to migrate to 0365 in the next few weeks. We are currently running Exchange Server 2007 on Server 2003 and our hardware is getting on a bit and needs replacing. I thought about upgrading and keeping on prem but financially it didn't really make sense. I have also spoken to a lot of people in education and business who have migrated and the feedback has been very positive. Once the migration has completed we are going to investigate Sharepoint and Lync

We've just replaced our excellent but old Panasonic with an Epson of 5000 or so lumens. Can't remember the model number off the top of my head but can find out. We've been really impressed with it Edit...it is an LCD and although ours is very high up the maintenance is low and I'm not a huge fan of DLP

I have found that the performance of my iPad 2 has dropped since installing iOS 8 - mainly in the area of Internet browsing, although I'm not sure why. A couple of others I know have said the same.

Do you actually need to move any existing data if you create a Documents folder? This Microsoft workaround doesn't actually say that as such

I have exactly the same need except that it's not going to be an inkjet (or variant) as they are just way too expensive to run and are unreliable. With that in mind it just leaves us with laser printers. The fact that it needs to do A3 is making the search a little more tricky so I would also be really interested if anyone has any recommendations.

I should say that it's a SAN as opposed to a NAS - an EMC CX4 to be precise. I need make the space available as a share.

Hi All I have been asked by the Art and Media subject areas if they can have a shared area that their students can save to, rather than their home folders or USB drives etc. As it happens we do have quite a bit of space on an old SAN so I'm happy to facilitate them. I'm not sure how best to set it up and make it available, but I'm sure someone on here has already done it, so any advice will be gratefully received. Many thanks Steve

I run about 3 miles a night - about 4/5 times a week and it has really made a difference over the last year and I've lost a few pounds too 😀 Thing is to start of slowly (physically and metaphorically!) and build it up. That way you won't find it so hard that you give up.

We use sitehelpdesk and have IT and Property on it and it works very well for what we need it for. Staff can either log calls via the web interface or email the helpdesk which automatically assigns it to the queue. http://www.sitehelpdesk.com

I'm not suggesting it isn't important, but he does seems to indicate that it requires a username and password to log on and there is AV in place. If the new wireless system is coming soon then it would seem pointless spending huge amounts of time on it if there are other concerns that need looking at. Of course if it's completely insecure then I think I'd just turn it off until the new one turned up!

I wouldn't get too hung up on the wireless network, although if that's the only real concern you have then the new one should be a positive step forward. Regarding the IT budget, Bursars are strange animals and can be very reluctant to release the reigns of control when it comes to budgets. What you need to do is show her/him that you can be trusted with the money, maybe by asking to look after part of it at first. Put together business cases for the areas that you think need attention, doing the most urgent ones first of course. They don't have to be complicated and there are people on here that can help if needed. Get two or three quotes together for each case that you do and take them to the SLT. It's probably going to take time to get want you want, and you may not always be successful but slowly slowly catchy monkey etc 😀

Same at my school - she has her own desktop PC obviously and has never asked for a laptop other than to borrow one for Governors meetings so she could take notes. She doesn't even bother with that now so it can't be a major problem for her.

It's a terrible idea and has nothing to do with improving services or the quality of teaching. In fact I don't even think the trust mentions this in their quote to the Guardian - simply about getting "value for money" for the taxpayer. Now there's nothing wrong with doing that per se but shouldn't they be doing it already like the rest of us are. Obviously the Secretary of State has to approve it and with an election just over the horizon I wonder if it will get through. The only positive I can see in any of the article is that the trust haven't selected Crapita.

Certainly never been asked here and I would be very much against it. There is no need for them to have one either as far as I am concerned. Having said all that I certainly wouldn't jeopardise my job or make my life difficult over it. I think I would my make my position known and then get on with whatever they wanted to do. You have to pick your battles carefully!

Well although I don't play the game, maybe Microsoft will spend some improving the graphics - they are a bit rubbish 😉
